Advice needed - 522, 921 or ?

I have an interesting situation and I wanted to see what all of you suggest. I currently have a 501, which I love and have been very happy with. I've been wanting a TV in the kitchen so I can watch the shows I've recorded while I cook. So, I thought I'll get a 508 for that room only and be done. But, I need to have the recorded shows be available in the tv room also, since I watch them in there a lot too. When the 522 was announced I thought it sounded perfect for my situation and was planning on getting one as soon as they were available to purchase. Then, last weekend we got a plasma tv and now want the ability to view and PVR HD.

So, I really want the 921, but I'm not sure how I could get it to work for my situation. Any thoughts about this or other ideas for me?

Two more things I forgot to mention. I need the ability to watch both feeds at the same time. My boyfriend is usually watching something in the TV while I cook dinner. Also, is the $369 price the 522s are being offered for on ebay a fair price?

I'll let other posters go thru all the hookup options on the 921, or you can look around for some of the manuals, etc. I think the biggest problem you might have is that I've read you can't watch HD and SD at the same time on the 921. ** Edit - I see you added that you want to have both HD and SD working at the same time. Just keep your 501, it's only an extra $5 per month for the "extra receiver" fee.

However, you'll LOVE HD on your plasma. I've had a NEC 50 for about two years, and the HD programming is gorgeous. I currently have a 501 and 6000. It's almost painful to watch NTSC (Never Twice the Same Color) broadcasts, and it's almost painful to not be able to PVR the HD stuff.

Yes, it's true, that some of it is upconvert, or in the case of ESPN-HD, just stretched "regular" pictures. It's also true that there are some HD channels that E* doesn't have. It's also true that some of the (particularly older) movies really show film defects.

Even with all that, you won't be able to believe how great the picture is. If you get a decent sound system, it truly is "just like being there".

I have a 921 on order thru satelliteguys.us, and I consider it a great addition to my entertainment setup.

Erin you may have trouble getting a 522 and if you get one off Ebay you may have trouble getting it activated. The 522 is supposed to be available only to new subscribers on DHP. According to Charlie Ergin they are not supposed to activate it for non DHP customers. Yes others have purchased and activated it but I wouldn't want to be the one DISH refuses to activate.

I doubt you will have any problems activating the 522 if you buy it from EBAY. I also got an email from Dishnetwork last night about the 522 for non-DHP customers and this is what the Dish Network Ecare Agent said

"Thank you for your email. At this time, we don't not have a date for when
these receivers will be available for non-DHP customers. Please stay tuned
to the monthly Consumer Charlie Chat (channel 101) and hopefully, we will begin releasing them sometime in the next quarter."

So it appears they should be getting out to us soon.

Thanks for all of the info. I have decided to get a 921 at my first opportunity. I'll keep the 501 in the TV room and have it wired out to the TV in my kitchen and also have it directly connected to our receiver in the TV room. That way I can record my show (there's really only one that I want to be able to watch) and watch it in either place.

The thing that helped me make my decision was a movie we watched last night. We finally bought the component cables for our progressive scan DVD and were absolutely amazed at the picture. I WANT HD!

Prescription drug costs

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

I went on Medicare recently (not an "advantage" plan) and my prescriptions at HyVee were very low out of pocket. The clerk said she was putting them on "Good Rx".

I'm fortunate and don't take any medications. A couple years ago I had to take some antibiotics and used the GoodRx app. Went to Walmart and the person behind the desk knew me and told me to just buy them outright....the GoodRx price was a LOT higher. She said they aren't supposed to tell customers when they see they are being screwed.

Actually I take just 2 prescriptions, Atorvastatin and Lisinopril. They cost me $6 each for 100 pills. Next year that will be nothing.

My Wife was recently in an antique store and saw a rotary desk phone and it had one of those sticker overlays that had a business listed with phone number under each number on the dial. She looked closer and it had my old Radio Shack listed under the 8...she bought it. Pretty cool keepsake. Back then I rented vhs movies as well so I had it listed as Radio Shack / Movie Gallery and then the phone number.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Week Six Balls and Goats and WTH is Going On in The NFL??

Browns. 1st place in the North. Yup. Believe it or not

Chiefs. Undefeated.

Titans. Won a game ! .... Colts I know, but still.

Saints. Won a game after a while.

Steelers. Having the same season they always have. They somehow find wins on their way to an unceremonial 1st round exit. Mike Tomlin is proud.

Cards. Won a game without scoring a single touchdown

Broncos. How they manage to win games with the dogshit offense they have should be studied.

Bears. Caleb's back and so is their mojo.


Goats

NFC East. For the 2nd straight week no team from this clown show of a division won a game. Eagles are cooked without Hurts. Who's not that good anyway. Commanders suck, Dallas is well ..... Dallas and the Giants have no QB.

Ravens. Lamar is out (as usual). But still. Losing to the Browns is never ok.

Chargers. Still can't win.

Rams. So much for the powerhouse team. They are 2 games under .500

Seattle. Lost to the offenseless Broncos.

Jerry made himself General Manager after he bought the team but make no mistake Jimmy engineered that trade. As well as a lot of others at the time.

Jimmy Johnson is a football guy. Jerry Jones is a marketer (hustler).

When I see a football player get a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct (like taunting) in a close game, I often wonder what he was thinking. Was he thinking, I'm doing everything I can to make this a better team and help win a championship? Or, was he saying to himself, I want everyone to notice how great I am?

Johnson inspires one, Jones the other.

Hello again

I haven't posted in almost 17 years. Over the air, sat, offline, anything-but-the-internet is still one of my avid pursuits. Been playing with offline tv viewing and offline web browsing. I have great appreciations for this site still being here. It's so hard to find public communities that haven't sold out to social media company.
