This is purely based on my experience over the past 6 months. After experiencing both sides, I have come to the conclusion that (for me) Bright House Networks (my local cable company) is the better choice in regards to TV service. I've listed my reasons below. So once my contract is up with DTV I'm switching back to BHN. I'm glad I tried Directv so I know what it's like on both sides of the fence so I won't wonder if DTV is a better option. My mind is made up. I'm going back to cable.

Why Bright House Networks is better then Directv:

  • Service is interrupted every time bad weather arrives. (Living in Central Florida makes this a MAJOR deal breaker.)
  • HD service is not free. It's at least $10/Mo. with Directv.
  • Have more then 1 TV? You'll pay extra for each additional TV.
  • 'Local on 8's' on Weather Channel is not local. It's regional. (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, etc.)
  • Missing many HD channels: GSN, Oxygen, FX Movie, We, Logo, TVGN, Ovation, GAC, Fuse, Esquire, NASA
  • ?No 'Central Florida News 13' (I actually really miss it)
  • No SEC Network (Not a deal breaker, but still a big deal. Gotta have my Gator games.)
  • ?Annoying 'Cinema' banner ads throughout the guide that cannot be disabled. (These seem SO pointless to me)

To be fair Directv does do some things better then BHN:

  • Better Equipment (DTV wins this battle hands down)
  • Better On-screen Guide (Fully customizable)
  • Better iOS/Android App (DTV app is far superior to what BHN offers)
  • NFL Sunday Ticket (One of the main reasons I switched to DTV, but I'm not watching it very much at all)

P.S. As for internet service… I still have BHN 60mbps.

You DO pay for the HD with Brighthouse, it's just not an itemized line.

That's a fair point.

You get boxes with BH for as many TV's as you want with NO FEE to mirror them?

With Bright House you only pay for the box(s) you lease. No mirroring charges.

I just looked at the list of HD channels you listed that were missing .... the ONLY one I have ever watched is WE, for CSI Miami. If you honestly watch the rest of them, you have a wide range of viewing, more than most.

It's not that I watch all of them on a regular basis, but if a network offers HD, the service provider should carry it.

As for the outage daily ... really ?
Please post your Sat levels for the 99 and 103 Sats .... could be a simple solution of peaking the dish, or it could be legit, seeing you get the heavy rains, it is an issue in Florida from what some others have said.

99: All above 93
103: All above 95

I've talk to my neighbors about this and all say they experience the same. Most say that's the sole reason they have cable.

SEC Network ... they will have it by the time it's needed. (football season) I would be real surprised if they didn't .... after all, you can see most of the SEC games on ESPN, seeing they are hijacking ESPN this year.

Most likely you're right, but not willing to chance it.

Btw, when the storm comes thru and your Brighthouse cable line to your house goes down, how many days till they get to YOUR ticket to put you back in service.

With D*, once the storm moves out, your back in business ...

I have no idea what you were trying to ask here, but I can say that before I went to Directv I had cable tv for over 10 years and even grew up in a home with cable tv. The only time my cable TV has ever blacked out is during major hurricanes (not even during tropical storms) and once when lighting hit a BHN distribution hub. TV service was only out for about 24 hours. And once the hurricanes clear out, service is restored extremely quickly. I've never had cable out during our daily spring/summer thunderstorms though. That's what annoys me most is a simple thunderstorm disrupts my service. No thanks.

Why did you post all this, just to tell us you were leaving ?
Normally people post here with ideas or questions on how to correct an issue, you did not.
I was just curious.

I posted to maybe a little to tell you all, but mostly to see what type of opinions come out. Good or bad.

I'd say that 90% of those on this particular forum are well aware of the negatives, EVERYONE that gets Sat, D* or DISH knows that weather can cause issues, however, those well peaked rarely have issues.

I've had torrential down pours, normally won't be a problem, once in a while I'll lose signal for a few minutes, but thats about once a year.

I had 85 inches of snow this past winter, 10' at a time at times, more coming on Tuesday and NEVER lost signal this winter.

NO Provider carries ALL the HD channels, NO ONE.

So you can have 17 BH boxes and they are free ? interesting, whats your monthly charge for each box ?
TheTechGuru
Cable Internet (thus TV too for TV subscribers) was down for 3 weeks after Ike. DirecTV worked as soon as we fired up the generator.

i have bright house beside dtv. you do have to pay for each hd box you have with bhn. i believe the price per box goes down, depending on the number of dvr's you are using,

as for satellite outage, my dish is pretty much in alignment and i only lose signal in a bad downpour. and then i lose for about 10 minutes. but i have also lost cable signal in bad storms too.

bhn's dvrs are horrible. they don't compare with genie. if you want something comparable you need a new tivo roamio.

bhn's picture quality sucks as most channels are still mpeg2. the main bright spot with cable is the number of hd channels they have that dtv doesn't.

hmmm maybe I should post a "I went back to OTA" thread and the reasons why just like the OP did :)

Maybe he was referring to analog cable which doesn't require a box in each room. Before we got satellite we only had a digital cable box hooked up to our main TV in the living room. The TVs in the basement and our bedrooms just got analog cable from the wall. Switching to Dish and having to pay an equipment fee for each one of those TVs basically wiped out the price benefit of taking a new customer deal with Dish.

Of course, there were lots of drawbacks to our old cable setup. First, we only received all the channels we paid for on our main TV with the cable box. Several channels were digital only. We could only watch some channels in our living room like MLB Network, HBO and, FSN Detroit +(the overflow channel. The main FSN Detroit channel came in analog too.). Switching to Dish and finally getting every channel we paid for on all our TVs was a big deal at first.

Secondly, not paying for a cable box at each TV saves lots of money but it also means no cable box features. We had no interactive guide on our secondary TVs. You either had to watch TV Guide Network or flip through the channels to find something to watch. More importantly, there was no HD outside of the QAM channels and no DVR on our secondary TVs.

Cable already has, or will be soon getting rid of analog TV in most markets. For those who still have it available, it's an option to save money on all your secondary TVs while still having independent viewing that isn't available with satellite. Even if it isn't an option for most of us here who would never go back to the days of SD cable with no DVR some people don't care about that stuff. Believe it or not, I still have relatives who will be clinging to their analog cable until it finally goes away in the next couple months.

bright house in central florida is making the switch to all digital, even as i type this. those customers who are still getting an analog signal need an adapter so they can receive digital. i believe that is free until the first of next year.

They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

You are thinking of the 921. The 922 was the first DVR with Sling functionality built in (that was eventually disabled along with the Sling Adapter for the 722s and the 1st Hopper because they relied on now-defunct Adobe Flash technology). With the bugginess described by others and the removal of its marquee feature (Sling) the 922 faded into obscurity once the Hopper 2 with built in Sling was released and they finally made the concept into a fully functional product.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.
