This is sort of a poll. Everyone list the channels they feel are just a waste of satellite bandwidth. Channels that we all could easily live without and feel there are much better channels out there that could make better use of the bandwidth this channel is wasting.

First on my list is, you guessed it.. The Bingo Channel!

Great "poll". Here's my list -- will Charlie listen?

Ok, first some comments, to keep the flames down ;)

First, I don't know if and how much bandwidth the "Let's advertise DISH on a DISH channel so that DISH customers know that DISH is available if they want to sign up for DISH" channels take up. But if they are taking up anything, get rid of them. WE ALREADY HAVE DISH.

Second, I listed channels that I do not watch, and have never watched. I am not necessarily indicating that they are without merit, just that I have no interest in them. If enough people do want them, I have no problem with them staying on the air. Just like there are people who have no need for sports realize that a reasonable number of sports channels helps keep the subscription numbers up at the critical mass.

Third, education, religion and shop-at-home channels -- isn't one or two of these enough? I realize that they are free or no cost to Charlie, but they take up bandwidth (that is the point of this thread, isn't it?). I would rather have the channels empty than put in free junk that nobody watches. That way, there is clearly space for adding new "compelling" programming, instead of all of us wondering where it will fit.

Fourth, comments on individual channels or groups --

I see little need for all of the educational channels. We watch BYUTV on a regular basis. I think that we are not alone in this. What type of viewership is there for the other channels? If I were told that only 200 or 300 people had ever turned on BYUTV, I would expect it to go away. Any channel should face the same scrutiny. Maybe I am underestimating the viewership on the edu channels. If so, my apologies, and may they ever broadcast! But if not, see my third point (keep them empty).

I have great respect for those who provide or watch the religious channels. But do we need all of them? I have not spent much time watching them, but see the need for one or two. But we currently have 4. If the viewership of these channels is below a certain level (I don't have a specific number in mind), cut off the two that have the lowest viewership.

Music channels. Do we need 20 stereo and 20 mono? Get rid of half of them. We only listen to the Holiday Music channel during December. Other than that, we never listen to any of them. We would rather listen to our own CDs and get a much better sound. And do we need 2 different VH1 and 2 MTV channels? Isn't one of each enough?

There are a bunch of sports alternative channels. Get rid of them. If something is blacked out locally, do what the locals do. Watch Oprah.

Shopping channels. One or two is enough. My wife enjoys watching QVC. But she has never been able to stomach more than a few minutes on any one of the others. Get rid of most of these. Even if QVC is the lowest rated, get rid of it, and keep only the top one or two.

News channels. Not going to start a flame war over FOX vs. CNN vs. MSNBC. Keep them all. But do we really need CSPAN 2, or CNBCW? And I think that HNN has worn out its welcome. The other channels and the internet have made it irrelevant. Nobody keeps it on all day. And for quick update I would rather get on the web.

Science channels (oh boy). I am not necessarily for getting rid of all of them. We don't watch them, but can see the value. If there are enough viewers for each individual channel, keep it. But if there are some that do not have enough viewers, kick it out.

Childrens channels -- same question, do we need all of them? Aren't there enough. And yet I see posts on this forum that want even more! I think we have at least 4 or 5 too many. Let the ratings decide.

Sports -- Although I am sports junkie, I think that there are some that could go. Get rid of 2 or three (plus the alternates). Clean out the non-watched channels to make more room for HD.

Enterntainment -- I have no problem with any of these, but we just don't watch them. If we are in the minority, keep the channel. If nobody else is watching it either, get rid of it. These are going to be purely subjective, and each is so different, that I am not claiming that they are redundant like the religious or shopping channels. As above, let the ratings decide.

OK, here is my list. A total of 90 channels. We could fit some "compelling" new stuff on these spaces.

The sports alternate channels are when more than one sports team is on a RSN. Another is when a RSN covers more than on state. Perfect example is FSN N (436)..It covers both MN & WI. MN can see only MN sports (Wolves, Wild, and up until the end of last year, the Twins). WI can only see the Bucks & Brewers. When the Bucks & Brewers are on FSN, they are on Sports Alt 2 (446). The main channel (436) has whatever is on in MN.

These stations pay to get their programming on Dish...also helps keep our bill down :)

Music
167-GAC
163 - VH1CL
161 - MTV2
158 - FUSE

I personally like GAC (for the Grand Ole Opry) and VH1CL (although MuchMoreRetro on ExpressVu blows this channel out the door). MTV2 for the Headbangers Ball (boy there's a clash..Headbangers ball & Grand Ole Opry)

They're not going to be able to kill off the mono audio channels... that's what feeds the Muzak service to stores, restaurants, businesses, etc. Again, audio takes up very little bandwidth.

Also, channels with just a mere stationary logo screen (i.e the Dish logo or the Dish 500 screen) don't take up much bandwidth either.

I remeber reading at one point the channels with the Dish Logo are static-assigned meaning they take up pretty much Zero bandwidth, the music you hear is a redirected Muszak channel or Dish CD channel.

I could be wrong though

I haven't seen a slate in a while. The ones I used to see were "Business TV" or PPV that was off the air. BTV now shares channels with shopping channels (no bandwidth waste, other than that implied in shopping channels :) ) and PPVs can use their normal channel for the off-air slate. The NBA and NHL package channels also need one slate channel each package, and the alt-sports can use their own bandwidth.

All the Musak/DishCD channels are on 119 and 9900 (the only slate I know of other than above) is on 110. So the audio isn't directly shared.

Still, the 9900 channel seems to be the only card channel left that needs bandwidth that isn't already reserved for when the channel is on-air. I am suprised that there is no 104 card for BingoTV to advertise it. Low bandwidth, and they could flip to it's full signal (shared with an internal channel) for the two hours it is needed).

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

remembers when ATT had stores and leased home phones

My Wife was recently in an antique store and saw a rotary desk phone and it had one of those sticker overlays that had a business listed with phone number under each number on the dial. She looked closer and it had my old Radio Shack listed under the 8...she bought it. Pretty cool keepsake. Back then I rented vhs movies as well so I had it listed as Radio Shack / Movie Gallery and then the phone number.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Week Six Balls and Goats and WTH is Going On in The NFL??

Browns. 1st place in the North. Yup. Believe it or not

Chiefs. Undefeated.

Titans. Won a game ! .... Colts I know, but still.

Saints. Won a game after a while.

Steelers. Having the same season they always have. They somehow find wins on their way to an unceremonial 1st round exit. Mike Tomlin is proud.

Cards. Won a game without scoring a single touchdown

Broncos. How they manage to win games with the dogshit offense they have should be studied.

Bears. Caleb's back and so is their mojo.

Goats

NFC East. For the 2nd straight week no team from this clown show of a division won a game. Eagles are cooked without Hurts. Who's not that good anyway. Commanders suck, Dallas is well ..... Dallas and the Giants have no QB.

Ravens. Lamar is out (as usual). But still. Losing to the Browns is never ok.

Chargers. Still can't win.

Rams. So much for the powerhouse team. They are 2 games under .500

Seattle. Lost to the offenseless Broncos.

Jerry made himself General Manager after he bought the team but make no mistake Jimmy engineered that trade. As well as a lot of others at the time.

Jimmy Johnson is a football guy. Jerry Jones is a marketer (hustler).

When I see a football player get a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct (like taunting) in a close game, I often wonder what he was thinking. Was he thinking, I'm doing everything I can to make this a better team and help win a championship? Or, was he saying to himself, I want everyone to notice how great I am?

Johnson inspires one, Jones the other.

I haven't posted in almost 17 years. Over the air, sat, offline, anything-but-the-internet is still one of my avid pursuits. Been playing with offline tv viewing and offline web browsing. I have great appreciations for this site still being here. It's so hard to find public communities that haven't sold out to social media company.

Hello folks, well my luck ran out last week with a nasty thunderstorm and after 39 years here, finally took a hit. Now, the FTA receivers I had for some years worked great until now. Recently picked up a fairly cheap receiver, online, KOQIT and seems to be good, but for the life of me, I cannot get the HDMI output to work with 3 of my Samsung monitors. I can hook it up to my Samsung TV and its HDMI input and it works fine. The 2 receivers I lost also worked fine with them, so am I going crazy? anyone have come across this or have any suggestions? And, since this is a somewhat cheap unit but works, what is everyone out there using for receivers these days? without breaking the bank? I enjoy watching FTA TV, so I will invest more if needed, what is a really good, detailed unit these days. I'm so use to watching a few of them HD channels. Right now I'm down to composite hookups, yuck! Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frank

Take the cover off, show me pics of the board of the bad one and also the bottom of the board. I'm an old hardware electronics tech plus a satellite dealer; I fixed a lot of FTA and regular receivers. I may be able to fix it for you. And yes, they got hit by lightning; it's best to email me the pics at diamondsatellite@snet.net or call me at 203-232-8888. I give you a 50-50 chance of fixing it; I do have spare parts. my phone is a fliptop phone

Anybody know how to add "hidden" audio channels like for 101 W Ku or 105W C band on these recvr's? I've exported the database file but don't have anything that will read or edit it.
cyberham
For 105W C, you scan in the Westwood tp normally. Then select the audio channel you want. Not necessary to manually enter. On 101W, you must manually enter.
