I have 4 BellTV receivers, 2 6100, 1 6400 and 1 3100. I am using SW44 and the power box for switch is inside my house. System has been installed since Bell TV was launched and upgraded to HDTV about 3 years ago. Transponder readings are between 50-70, as seen on the receiver screens. I normally "lose" the signal in bad weather, probably like every one else.

I have encountered a problem and I am not sure which way to go with it.

I spent 8 weeks away on a trip to Asia this summer. When I got back, my 2nd half tells me that the 6400 receiver is dead. I check, no satellite input. I go to my 3100 to see the sat levels there and all of a sudden, the 6400 comes to life. The other 2 receivers are working fine.

About 2 weeks ago, the same receiver is dead again. This time, there is no coming back. I move it to other locations and there are no signal inputs at all. It had millions of errors when I did the diagnostics. I ordered and received another 6400. I installed it this morning and it worked within 1 minute. In other words, I concluded that my old 6400 was simply dead and that it was simply a coincidence that it came back to life (temporarily) when it did.

Last night, watching my beloved Habs, one of my 6100 randomly goes dead. Nothing on any of the transponders. I go outside, light overcast sky, no rain, no wind. I check the other 6100, same thing: no signal on either SAT but I did not check every transponder. I go to my 3100, signal on N82 T16 only. Signal at about 60%. Nothing on any of the other transponders. Within about 10 minutes, the 6100 comes back to life, initially only for analog and after 30 minutes, full HD on all channels. I checked the transponder signals and all is back to normal, between 55 and 75% which I will call normal for here.

When my 2nd half got home, she mentioned that over the summer (when I was away), at least once, the signal disappeared randomly, for no reason at all and came back to life on its own. In other words, I have some sort of intermittent failure (something that could have killed the 6400?).

I checked my SW power supply, nothing unusual,. I checked my SW44 (outside in an all-weather enclosure), nothing unusual noted. I checked the grounding which goes directly to the SW. Nothing noted. I saw that I have 2 crimp fittings on SAT1 and 2 compression fittings on SAT2 but since the cables are more or less static and the fittings protected from the elements, I can't see water getting inside. The SW44 itself is warm to touch but I assume that it's normal. I have not gone on roof as I don't know what I would look for there (apart from the bees' nest inside the mast!).

Any help appreciated!

I will run a T by T test on both sats later today and report. I did not think it was normal to have some Ts at zero and others at 75%. BTW, for my position, 75% is good.

Now to the cabling: I thought about it as a problem. The exterior shows some sun degradation and the long length could have "pulled" on the crimp connector over time, creating corrosion , etc. Time to upgrade but it's raining today so may be tomorrow.

Other things I found in other forums: a bird perching on dish, leaves landing on dish (it is autumn after all) or insects (within the arm or the mast). Will look for all that when I go to roof.

Upgrading entire system? I will look into it. Must be done before winter sets in though.
Slartibartfarst
If 75% is "good for your position", I would be looking into separate bigger dish's.
M
I checked all T on both N91 and N82 (on 6131). On N91, I get about 65 on odd T and 70 on even T. On N82, I get about 55 on odd and even.

Chaining dish size is probably a good idea but it has a long lead time. Weather was bad today so I had not time to go to roof for full inspection.
M
"Changing dish"...
M
Update

Went to dish. Diameter is 20". Both LNBF seemed to be in good shape. I checked all coax. Condition acceptable. The grounding screw seemed a little rusty but the cables are grounded anyway so I did not worry about it (plus is was windy). The dish is rock solid and it has not moved since I installed it. While I was up there, I checked LOS and it seems fine. I am already at the apex of roof so I am not sure where I would go it I had LOS issues. I did find spiders inside the arm and spider webs in front of the LNBF but removing the webs had no effect on signal.

Bottom line: I am not finding anything obviously wrong. I will continue to monitor and look into upgrading the entire dish assembly. I will report back when the sudden drop happens again (if it happens again).

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

So, the New season won't be on the same day commercial free ???

Looks like the On Demand will Still be the Next Day ...

If you have the Top tier, you could get the LIVE Network feed same as any Cable or OTA would.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!
