This is kind of long but after the posts I've made criticizing the process, it's only fair to give a review. I finally received my 811 last Friday (1/16) after the initial install date of 12/26 and a 1/5 reschedule that didn't happen either. It was worth the wait even though I blasted E*! (They still deserve the criticism on their marketing/handling)

Quirks. Having read the problems others have had, I did experiance the either no picture or no sound on occassion when switching between OTA and Sat. Seems to have settled down. The worst problem I experianced was losing the 110 sat signal altogether. 119 was there and I checked my other receiver and 110 was there, but not on the 811. After thinking through the problem, I determined that the 811 is temperature sensative. I had a fire going at the time and the room had gotten warm. After cooling down the room, 110 came back. (No, it's not near the wood stove and it is in the open) So, once I determined heat was the culprit, I've had no problems since. Maybe one of the Tech's can confirm this. Even my other receiver showed temperature "tamtrums" after the wife covered the cooling vents by placing stuff on top of it. (Finally convinced her not to do that!)

Programming. HDNet, HDNetM and DiscHD are the best. Good shows and great HD. ESPNHD is a laugh. I've seen one actual HD game, everything else is SDTV converted (actually stretched to 16:9). Don't waste your time with ESPNHD. HBOHD is pretty good, depending on the movie they show. Even the older shows on HDNet are pretty darn good in HD.

OTA. Here was a really nice surprise. I live about 40-50 miles from the transmitters. With analog, I could kind of get a watchable picture with a Terk42. After getting the 811, I bought a Phillips amplified VHU/UHF rabbit ear/loop combo for $25 from Walmart. (upto 45db gain, adjustable) I figured I would try it first before putting alot of cash into a Channel Master and amp. After playing with it, I get CBS, FOX and PBS with signals from low 70's to mid 80's. This from a cheapie antenna! ABC's signal stays at 49, no matter what adjustment I make and am unsure if the NBC affiliate is even transmitting a Digital signal. I watched the AFC Champ. game in HD, OTA and it was spectacular to say the lest. The NFC game on Fox wasn't really HD but definately higher Resolution. PBS is HD all the time. The Fox station is transmitting two channels, the network feed and the local broadcast. I do not believe they are setup for HD content yet but still has a great picture. They will be there soon though.

My Setup. The 811 is connected to my Hitachi 46F500, 46" RPTV. It's a grate TV and I was quite pleased with the HD picture it has. I was concerned it would be grainy but it is not. I am connected with Component cables. I will try DVI when I can find a cable at a decent price. The TV has it's own upconversion to either 520p or 1080i. Before the 811, the shows were better than SDTV but stuff like games got blury on action shots from a far vantage point. With the 811 conversion, it is way better. I have been using basic cable to get the locals and now I can dump cable altogether now. (C-ya Pig!)

Overall, it has been a good move. $149 for the receiver is a good deal and they way it handles OTA is very good and a bonus, IMHO. Using the signal meter in the add digital menu is very handy. The only complaint I have is it does not do channel recall between OTA and Sat. You get recall in the mode you are in, kind of strange I think.

I give it an 8 on a 10 scale.

I only ever get 49% on my local NBC channel.

All the other come in at about 90% and they are all on the exact same tower, located 5 miles from me.

Call your NBC station and ask them what power output they are at.

I called mine yesterday and he said they are putting out only the minimum required. He also said that right now, there is little HD programming and very few sets to watch it with. His demeanor said to me, "we don't care if you are getting a signal or not and don't expect us to do anything about it."

I also called the ABC affiliate and he was more helpful. He was going to send a person out to measure the signal at my location. He did say they probably would not increase power until next year, but may increase it some if the measurement at my location is really that low. (it is!)

All the transmitters are located on the same tower so don't make the assumption they are all doing the same thing.

I've not seen anything about on the 49% thing. When I first hooked up my Phillips antenna, 49% was all I saw. However, after playing with positioning and adjusting the gain, I get PBS at 70-72%. Also, the El Paso stations (CBS and FOX) are at 80+%, which I find phenominal as they are 40+ miles away in hilly terrain and i get them via the $25 antenna. Always a good picture and sound. I found the receiver will lock on in the mid 50's but is not stable enough to provide a consistant picture/sound.

I am in the process of testing an old 10 element, outside antenna. I may try it out this evening, time permitting. I can live with getting only PBS, CBS and FOX but am curious if I can get the lower power ABC/NBC stations. I will check it without any amplification and if I get no results, will buy an amplifier and try it out. I am not hot on spending $100-$150+ for an antenna setup. The amp will run about $20 I think.

I'll let you know what my results are.

Harry,

Here is the thread from DBStalk that deals with the 49% signal problem.

Thanks for the link.

I've seen the same thing, but in my case, I believe it does relate to the signal itself. It appears that if the strength does not make it out of the mid 50's, it bounces anywhere from 0 to 49 to 52... When I do get a lock, the signal still bounces but by only 2 or 3 points. In all cases of bad/no reception, all stations have acknlowedged they are at low power or using a temporary antenna, as in the PBS case. The bouncing signal strength is odd though. I may try and reseat the module to see if maybe it came loose during shipping.

The 6000 vs 811 the guy was talking about obviously shows there is a difference between the units.

better gaming picture since you got 811?

I couldn't help but notice...I am getting the 811 soon and I am curious as to how you set it up to get a better picture while gaming..was it the inputs?Because mine is grainy hooked directly to the tv.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

One thing these five teams have in common is that they all signed exclusive local streaming rights deals with DAZN, replacing their traditional regional sports networks.

I know the Spurs will have 22 games available OTA on KMYS-TV CW35 in the San Antonio market, but they'll still be available on DAZN as well. The CW35 broadcasts are an additional option, not an exclusive arrangement.

With channel 680 now available, we should be able to get all the Spurs home feeds on NBALP again! (as well as the other teams above of course)

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I can't BELIEVE this is being such a difficult subject. The issue isn't the price....it's the advertised price per ounce. A lot of shoppers, myself included, use the price per ounce in determining which is the better value....with that number being inaccurate, it can trick someone into thinking that one product cost less per ounce than a competing product. Is this a crime?...above my pay grade. Is it dishonest? Yes.

Jimbo
A pound of Coffee, does that include the package it's in ?

No, a pound of coffee refers strictly to the net weight of the coffee itself (16 ounces), not including the weight of the bag or packaging. [1, 2]
  • Net Weight: Food and coffee sold by weight are required by law to list the net weight on the label, which measures only the contents inside the package. [1, 2]
    • Packaging Weight: The foil bag, valve, and label add extra weight to the total item when you hold it, meaning the gross weight on a scale will be slightly more than 16 ounces.
    • Watch Out for Bag Sizes: Always check the label carefully, as many specialty roasters now sell 12-ounce (three-quarter pound) bags while keeping the price or visual impression similar to a full pound. [1, 2, 3]
meStevo
The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I have great appreciations for this site still being here. It's so hard to find public communities that haven't sold out to social media company.

Got to admit, I had to look up "offline web browsing". I had never heard of it.

From what I understand, it's just saving a article or whatever, to Save it so you can read it later ....
Unless he's talking something entirely different ... the way I am looking at it, you Still need the Internet to load it originally.
