OTHER  New Setup

Ok been a long time since i have had time to actually do any new FTA stuff. I run a HTPC machine for all media control for TV etc...

I really would like to combine it all into one Media box. Are there any on the market that can do this? Needs to do Satellite and Terrestrial OTA. That seems easy enough. But i am not seeing any that can connect to my storage arrays for locally stored movies tv shows.

When you say an HTPC machine, I assume you are running something like Kodi and you have video content stored on a drive in or connected to the HTPC box. The thing is that frontend software such as Kodi needs to be able to connect to a backend system that has the PVR backend, unless you have no desire to ever record anything. While you can run the backend software, such as TVHeadend, on the same machine as your frontend, that may or may not be the smartest thing to do. There is a package called OpenElec that (I THINK) contains both the Kodi frontend and the TVHeadend backend. Please check further and don't take my word on that, and in any case you may have to specify that you want TVHeadend during installation. I don't care much for OpenElec myself, because it tries to insulate you from Linux, but some people consider that a feature.

If you are asking is whether there is a standalone box that will act as a backend for your HTPC box, there are a few that I am aware of, they are the TBS MOI+, the TBS MOI Pro, and the TBS MOI Pro - AMD. Be aware that if you go that route, the MOI+ only takes one tuner card so you have to choose between a DVS-S2 card such as the TBS-6905 or a terrestrial card. Since you're in the US the only choice for that would be the TBS6704. I would recommend you skip the MOI+ anyway and go with one of the higher end models, not only can they accept more than one card but they are better devices.

Or you can build a backend yourself and install TVHeadEnd on it; chances are that if a box will run Ubuntu Server and will accept PCIe cards it will work and you will be able to run TVHeadend on it, but that requires you to know a little bit about Linux. If you are building a new server, make sure you can return the motherboard if it doesn't work because a few motherboards apparently just won't work with TBS cards. And as I said, it is certainly possible to run both the frontend and backend software on the same machine, but sometimes it's more convenient to have separate systems, particularly if your antenna and/or satellite dish cables come into your home at a spot that's nowhere near your TV's. I'd try to put the server in a place where you can give it direct wired access to your router because some people have reported that they have more problems if they try to use WiFi.

There was a review of the TBS MOI+ that talked about that device and gave some hints for setting up TVHeadend but it's probably a little out of date by now, particularly in regard to versions of TVHeadend. Then again if you buy one of the MOI devices it might come with an older version of TVHeadend for all I know. I'd check on that, because if you want to watch satellite signals in the USA you probably don't want a version of TVHeadend older than 3.9.2100, and device with embedded firmware can often be pretty far behind in versions of included software if the device manufacturer is slow to include updated versions.

I don't know of any other device besides the MOI devices that may do what I think you want to do, but perhaps someone else will, or maybe I'm not understanding what you want. One reason to build your own backend would be if you want to use some satellite or terrestrial tuner card or device that's not made by TBS, since the MOI's only support TBS cards and even then not every card that TBS has made. That may not be as true of the MOI Pro - AMD, it may at the very least be able to utilize external tuners such as the HDHomeRun devices for receiving ATSC signals, but I just don't know, and I suspect that's a pretty high end (read: pricey) system.

Without knowing what you already have, and exactly what you're talking about when you say you have a HTPC machine (What operating system? What software? Is it a standalone PC or a dedicated device or what?), it's hard to give any more specific suggestions.

I will try to explain more. I have a dedicated PC running KODI (don't always use the front end software) on Windows 8.1. Been thinking of using a version of Kodi that is on Linux. Reason being that the wife and kids use it all the time. they don't care or want to use the actual PC side of it. I have a full server rack with servers running VM's on XEN. So i can spin up what ever is needed for software. However as you stated would have to build something for the Tuners. Or buy and appliance. I currently store all contect on a 98TB FreeNAS array. I would be interested in PVR functions. So not sure if that explains more of what i am doing or not. I really just want to be able to combine the Satellite with the Terrestrial and the stored content on the servers. I think some of the suggestions you made above may help me out. I did some more looking and found the OpenElec but did not get much time to dig into it.

Maybe when i get back to the house I can send pics of what i mean by servers lol. I might be a geek my most peoples terms of geek.

Yes the suggestions should do nicely. Thank you so much.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

I'm sure I will watch at least the first episode but I am not optimistic.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

Where would this "dirt" come from? Dead skin and dandruff?

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Was down due to an emergency update at the ISP. They did email me seconds before they took it down and apologized for the short notice.

However once the server was back online NGINX failed to start.

I was at the grocery store and just rebooted the entire server and everything came back up again.

Just got home from the grocery store I will bring in the groceries and then take a look at what NGINX failed the first time.

Ok checked it out and for some reason the web server (NGINX) tried starting before the DNS resolver fully loaded. This is why it worked when I rebooted the machine.

Thanks to ChatGPT it had me change the NGINX config to prevent this from happening again.

With that said I can't prevent the ISP from doing emergency upgrades which was the cause of all of this.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.
