HR44 - Can I used Ethernet? DIRECTV Says No

My HR44 is installed right next to my Wireless Router. I was told by the installer and an online DIRECTV support person that I could not use hard wired Ethernet to my router and that I must wirelessly connect the HR44 to the router. I did hard wire it initially and it worked, but I heeded the advice of DIRECTV and connected it wirelessly.

The DIRECTV online support person just said, "It will screw things up."

I thought I'd ask here since I don't trust DIRECTV and it makes little sense it must be wireless. Of course all of the documentation says "wireless router" is required for Internet access, etc. So maybe they're right.

Finally, I ordered the GenieGo 2 (not here yet), it seems it connects to SWM and Ethernet as well. Do I need to have my HR44 connected to Wireless and GenieGo wired? I'm confused how that will all work. I can run another Ethernet cable to that cabinet.

Please advise and thanks in advance!

Ok, so I hard wired my HR44, then used the coax and splitter for the GenieGo (no Ethernet there). I gave my GenieGo a static IP via manual MAC address DHCP reservation and then forwarded 8082-8083. It was all working for a little while, but now my Genie regularly says Not Connected when using my Mac's Genie app. I can however ping the IP of the GenieGo, and I've rebooted the GenieGo and the HR44 a couple of times.

I've seen it work for a little while, but without any config change, it has decided to not work anymore. I hope the reliability is better than this. I am a network engineer, so in terms of IP addressing, DHCP, port forwarding, etc. I'm an expert.

I certainly don't treat my home network like a domain network, but I also don't use UPnP for port forwarding, so I need to rely on manual forwarding. That said, the IP/Mac reservation was causing an issue. I believe it to be defective in the GenieGo more than the router as I have many devices that work fine. However, it seems the GenieGo only seems to want to operate on the first IP it sees. So I set up a reservation for that one, and adjusted the forwarding and it's working fine now.

You want to connect the HR44 via ethernet,but it can create issues with whole home. That is the reason it is recommended to connect wirelessly. If you are connecting GenieGo and the Genie via ethernet, it should be fine, however. it could create issues if the GenieGo is connected via the MoCa network and the Genie is connected via ethernet.

No, it does NOT create issues with whole home. Connection directly to the ethernet works fine. This can be a problem with the HR24 but NOT with the Genies. The only thing you need to make sure is that there is only one connection to the ethernet from your DirecTV setup. That means the GenieGo should be connected to the coax network but not directly to the router as well, because that would create two paths.. See peds_48 post for info on this.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

You can't even trust the cost per ounce info in grocery stores anymore

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't banned this guy from all of their stores. He has been on their CASE the past few months.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner.

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

DIRECTV Cutting Edge Non Disclosure Agreement

In order to participate in any Cutting Edge testing, you must sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Attached are a .docx (Microsoft Word) and PDF version of the latest DirecTV NDA. I found it easiest to complete the .docx version then paste a photo or scan image of my signature, cropped closely to just the signature into it as a picture. Then set Word to wrap text around the picture so that the picture follows the text "Signature".

People who have better PDF tools than I do may prefer that version.

When you apply for any Cutting Edge testing, you will be told how to send the signed copy.

Any NDA you have signed before is still valid for the testing you have been and hopefull still are doing. The new NDA forms are ror new CE testers and new categories of CE testing. They have been placed here so that people who volunteer for any CE testing have access to them.

Still with Choice package? My stepdad says when the game started he got black screen and something to do with not the right package.
He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Which is what is interesting, I see the 4KFox channel on 148-01 but we're not subscribed to our Locals. So why it's coming in is puzzling. I thought that maybe it was a perk for Dish subscribers for the MLB Postseason.

I set a Timer for the Indiana - Ohio State game on Saturday. I'll take advantage of it while I can.

Its crazy how the ViP922 is so rare for no reason.

Why are ViP922s So rare? like its crazy how ebay has none, i checked everywhere, also, i got a ViP222k now, which is actually activated!

I remember this in the news too...

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

All DMA's now Western Arc

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Looks like Charlie Ergen will never give up satellite TV. The reason Echostar 25 the most poweful DBS satellite ever built at 110 location already. Also Echostar 26 another super satellite on order for 119 orbital location will be ready in 15 months. he will have 110/119 for another 20 years. Dish will be the only satellte company left. The reason for rural areas and some people like satellite easy to operate and change channels in seconds.

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

my me t.v. is in HD via the sat. though it's better PQ via ota

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

Yes, I considered D* as I knew some of my favorite channels had better PQ but too many require moving up to the "Choice" package and incurring the Regional Sports Fee.
I do not have METV or any of the Weigel owned channels here in El Paso.
