THANK YOU FCC. On October 23rd the commissioners at the FCC rescued much of the AM radio industry with a Rulemaking that will allow any AM owner to buy an FM Translator currently licensed anywhere within 250 miles of their AM station. They can then relocate the FM Translator to their market with one simple filing in an upcoming "one time only" filing window expected in early 2016. Subject to availability of unused FM channel(s) in their market, an FM Translator will allow them to simulcast their AM on the FM dial in high fidelity stereo 24 hours a day at full power…regardless of any current critical hours and/or nighttime AM restrictions.

25+ FM Translators available for auction and sale. PREVIEWS NOW. Registration open now. Buy Now prices available prior to auction. Auction bids accepted beginning 9AM CST Wednesday December 2, 2015. Auction ends 5PM CST Wednesday December 9, 2015.

I've seen that happen here in MN which brings me to a question in a bit.

There were 2 FM translators licensed to Hinckley, MN (1/2 way between Minneapolis and Duluth) and it was for Minn Public Radio. When MPR got 2 full service (satellite) stations in the area they sold the translators to a guy in St Cloud who wanted to do FM translators of his AM stations and spent about 4 years doing the "translator hop" since its so far away. Here is a snippet form Northpine about it back last year
Two FM translators that have been on a chain-link move from Hinckley for a few years have received construction permits for what may be their final destination. W293CS/106.5 and W297BO/107.3 will move their transmitters to Sauk Rapids, where they will transmit with 250 Watts from the "Red House That Rocks," home of WHMH/101.7 (Sauk Rapids-St. Cloud) and four AM stations. WHMH-HD3, which relays the Classic Country format of WVAL/800 (Sauk Rapids-St. Cloud), is specified as the primary station for W293CS. WHMH-HD2, which relays the Classic Album Rock format of WXYG/540 (Sauk Rapids-St. Cloud), is specified as the primary station for W297BO. W297BO is owned by Herbert Hoppe, who is the majority owner of WHMH and the AM stations, while W293CS is headed by Mark Hoppe. They would actually be the second and third FM translators simulcasting AM programming in St. Cloud, since K277BS/103.3 has already been relaying the News/Talk format of Leighton Enterprises' KNSI/1450 (St. Cloud) for several years.

Now the question is this....these 2 stations are still (according to the FCC) licensed to Hinckly even though Hinckly is no where remotely close to the coverage area (see pic below. The black circle is Hinckley (click to enlarge)

Untitled.jpg

Now my question is I see on the FCC site your translator (92.7) is licensed to Ionia. So of all these "moves" of translators do you think the FCC site will show the "actual" spot or the "orignal" (as in up to 250 miles away) spot?

the FCC will list the new city. KDWA Hastings, MN AM1460 signed on 97.9 a couple weeks ago and the FCC site shows the CP for Hastings

(not accusing here) but do you suppose they built them but didn't report the build and the move? I didn't look 'em up, either..is there an STA filed on any of them? (special temporary authority) Maybe something slipped through the cracks. The FCC is so loaded with things these days....

when I ran the callsign on the FCC page I see the application (Minor change in licensed facilities,), approvals and licensed to covers.

I honestly dont know.

I can't speak for FM translators, but I know TV translators and LPTV stations don't actually have anything in the rules requiring coverage of the community of license. The logic behind this is that a translator may be in a sparsely populated unorganized area that doesn't have a named community, or an LPTV may cover just a portion of a community where a specific population lives. But it's how you end up with things like WASA-LD in New York, which is licensed to Port Jervis but doesn't even come close to covering Port Jervis anymore.

LPTV and TV translator stations can update their communities of license without any FCC permission, as a result. I think it just takes a license modification filing. But if the licensee hasn't bothered to update it, then it wouldn't change, of course.

Interesting that a station bought an allocation.....but technically cant close (or move it) until July when they are allowed to buy it due to their class

from northpine

The Nebraska Rural Radio Association is buying K288GL/105.5 (Lead, SD) from Horizon Christian Fellowship for $15,000. The application states the NRRA will seek to move the translator to Scottsbluff, NE, to relay its KNEB/960 under the current AM revitalization window. The NRRA has signed on three other AM-on-FM translators in recent months. However, the application to move K288GL will have to wait until later this year because KNEB is a class B license, and the filing window for 250-mile moves is limited to class C and D AM stations until July 29. K288GL is not yet on the air and faced an April 22 deadline to sign on, but the asset purchase agreement states that NRRA will seek an extension due to the sale.

https://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?call=W280AA
and already they are asking to move the frequency

About a month after beginning test broadcasts, K&M Broadcasting has applied to move K250BO/97.9 (Hastings) to 97.7, where it would remain 250 Watts. The reason for the move is not specified in the application, but as noted here earlier, the existence of KEFE-LP/97.9 (Lakeville) limits the translator's fringe coverage to the south-central Twin Cities metro area. K250BO relays K&M's KDWA/1460 (Hastings).

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

That was quite enough....I definitely learned something from your post. Thanks

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.

If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.

Terrible tragedy. You would think that they would have safe guards in place that would prevent something like this from happening. I guess if you are going to ride in a passenger train it might be best to get a car near the rear.

They will have to look at the switching sections to determine WHY 2 trains were on the same track ... at the same time.
