How can you tell if the weak link is CPU,Video card or memory?

I built a system for my son. He uses Maya and ZBrush. Sometimes his computer lags. Best way to describe it is. As he draws. It's like a keyboard that does not add a letter for a search than all of a sudden all the letters show up. Well when you draw it affect the quality of the object if it does that. Current system is.

Memory is :Red Fury Hyperx 16 GB
CPU: AMD FX 8300 eight core 3.30 GHz
OS: Windows 10 pro 64 bit
Video card : Quadro K2200
Hard drive: Not SSD. 1TB 7200 sata


Any thoughts would be great thanks!!

I edit video, both 3D and 4K. These are extremely taxing on the hardware. There are tools you can install that measure the system performance balance while editing.

When I started editing 4K video I was having trouble getting real time playback from an editing timeline. One tool I used told me I was bottle necked at the SSD drive feeding video frames. So I needed to store my video clips on a faster storage device. The tool also told me that I was not even using all my RAM or CPU cores. So I put in a faster storage, switching from SSD to a PCIe storage card. This is 5 times faster than the SSD. Problem solved. Generally, you want to increase your CPU cores if you typically run multiple software applications. In my case 8 core threads will allow twice as fast rendering video as a 4 core threads but the more cores you have the more RAM you will need. When you run low on Ram, it will page to your SSD C drive, which can slow the OS and software. The fast video card is important too and will help with the display refresh on fast video frames per second. 3D requires twice as much processing as 2D in the graphics card. The key on system design for high performance is to have all the links in the chain equal. One strong link in a weak chain will not do you any good.

For my basic computer I am on now, a 4 core with 8GB RAM and onboard graphics card seems adequate for Chrome, and spreadsheet and word processor. I had a SATA hard drive originally, but decided to upgrade it to an SSD mostly to improve reboot speed. It went from 3 minutes to 45 seconds with the upgrade but the other stuff seems about the same. Internet, WP and spreadsheets seem to not benefit much from a SSD speed. I even run XP mode in the background to windows 7 pro.

Do some reading on computer bottlenecks.
Moo0 is the tool I have been using to tell me when there is a problem with hardware balance.

I'm sure there are others out there but this one has served me well. I don't run it all the time, only when I think something is causing a bottleneck.

Am I the only one that hates what Dish did to their mobile app?

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

Anyone else watch this show? Any guesses as to what was in the box Gibbs gave to Abby that was on her desk? It look liked it was glowing.

I also heard that someone was leaving the show at the end of this season. Any guesses as to who thats going to be?

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place. :eek:

Started watching Undercover Boss again

I had quit watching this show years ago because I ended up more annoyed than entertained. Well......I'm STILL more annoyed than entertained. I DO find it interesting to see how things work behind the scenes at many businesses. What annoys me is how utterly out of touch CEOs are with the companies they run. At the end of almost every episode the head of the company is amazed at how hard the employees have to work and many times have to work around impossible guidelines set forth from headquarters.

I found this one interesting because the new CEO had big plans for this company, Muscle Maker Grill, and it looked like the stores were all pretty busy. Recent history hasn't been good to this company however. I bet the covid lockdowns were the real killer.
