Hi everyone! I am totally new and uneducated about FTA. I want to become introduced inexpensively to this world at first to see if I like it, then can move up from there.

I am considering relocating to a remote area that does not have any entertainment or information services available. So I'm interested in FTA. I ordered an inexpensive DBV-S2/T2 with wifi (KII Pro Box) and will install a wifi antenna to receive (free and legal) wifi access, and a UHF antenna for the terrestrial signal. I now need to choose a satellite dish and LNBF.

I have my eye on a Winegard DS-3100 1 meter dish and an Amiko L-104 LNBF. Are these okay starter pieces in your collective opinion?

Also, there is only one coaxial cable going into my home. I would like to keep it that way, if I can. So, is there a splitter of some kind that will permit the signals from each of the three antennas to move along the one coax, then split them out once inside the home? I have not purchased the wifi antenna yet, so if there is a recommended frequency or channel for that that would work best with a splitter like that then I'm all ears.

Any advice you can render would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Titanium. Actually, there is no way I could have properly aimed the satellite without the Winegard or some other meter at the dish. The signal strength meter on the receiver moves so little and registers so little strength that there is no way I could have determined whether I was locked on the satellite using it alone. Per Arion's suggestion above, I set my initial south orientation and elevation and used the Winegard to physically aim the satellite, making the the declination and elevation tweaks using the meter.

I did finally figure things out. I ran a scan on the receiver and picked up programming from 14 satellites. Echostar 6 may not have any channels, but at least it was a unit I could locate and lock onto. I tried looking for Galaxy 19 for HOURS and could not lock onto it. There must be a dozen satellites right around it. Looks like only about 20 or 30 of the 311 Ku band stations I picked up are anything I can enjoy. I should have gone C Band. But this has been a good learning experience for me.

Looks like my average signal strength for any satellite is about 55% with quality around 50%. I guess that's good? The pictures come in looking pretty good on most programs.

It would be nice to pick up some more stuff toward the west, but trees are in the way. I am picking up satellites from 89W to 99W.

The strength and quality meters all vary wildly from receiver to receiver. My Linkbox show every signal as having 83-98% quality, while my X2 would show anywhere from 24-60% quality (and rarely above that). Having a proper standalone satellite meter is probably best.

As for your range, I'd recommend a chainsaw for those trees. I'm a big fan of 103w (NBC, NHK). At least you still get CGTN (95w) and ABC News One (91w).

Thank you all so much for the valuable input! This project has been to see if I could set up my own satellite system in anticipation of a future off-grid, solar powered application. Also on my list is attempting long distance WIFI throughput using directional antennas and capturing OTA signals (all solar powered). It is good to know that it can be done without breaking the bank!
. Raine
If you are picking up 311 channels between 89 and 99 W Ku, you must have locked onto 97 W (G19) in there somewhere and not realized it.
B
Raine is right, between 89W and 99W, most satellites have only about a dozen channels (more or less), but 97W alone has around 200. If you get lots and lots of religious channels (in various languages, mostly English, Arabic and Farsi), and some African channels in French, that's 97W...

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.
