It is going over a month with no CBS/channel 10 here in Columbus and it is starting to get old. Don't get me wrong I am behind DIRECTV to fight BUT boy it is just going on a long time. I feel like I'm back in the 90's when I used to rush home by 9:00 on thursdays to watch Seinfeld.

FWIW, my understanding is that when Directv's LRF (local receive facility) is co-located on premises with a station, typically they are getting the MPEG2 stream that is sent to the station's encoder, which means they get the same thing as if they picked it up OTA. That would be delivered to them via ASI. Whether OTA is better depends on how much extra compression they may do when they convert it to MPEG4 (i.e. how many other HD channels they have to carry on the same transponder depending on the needs of the market)

However, in some cases I've heard they get the raw uncompressed HD-SDI feed into their encoder, which means they can get better quality than OTA. Whether they actually do have better quality again depends on how many other channels share the same transponder.

The same applies for cable, if they get the raw HD-SDI feed they may have better quality than OTA, but some systems that really compress it (like Comcast's MPEG4 headends making everything 3 Mbps!) they may be worse.

Where I live the local Fox and CBS stations had no subchannels for a long time, and OTA was vastly superior to Directv's feed. Now all the local stations have three subchannels, and the quality is pretty much the same between cable, OTA and Directv. Unfortunately nothing compared to what it was with a pristine 19 Mbps MPEG2 HD via OTA!

Where I work, DirecTV has a fiber feed and uses OTA as a backup. Comparing the two signals, I don't see any difference, and wouldn't expect to as they are both the same ~14 Mbps feed from the encoder. The subchannels on the OTA signal also affect what is sent through the fiber.

But the ASI fiber feeds to the MVPDs have those same sub-channels added in as well since it comes from the same station encoder output which feeds the ATSC broadcast transmitter.

So even though the MVPDs may demultiplex the local station's transport stream to separate out the channels they wish to broadcast and place them on separate channels of their systems. The individual streams have still been originally compressed to the same amount by the local station as the streams in the OTA broadcast signal.
I can speak from experience and give direct incite. DirecTV gets the majority (I say 75 percent) of its local affiliate signals via OTA 8VSB like you do at home. The only time DirecTV sees an ASI feed or fiber feed is when the Local Collection Facility (NOT LRF LIKE E* calls them) is co-located at a TV station and that TV station usually hands off an ASI signal to them with OTA used as a backup. Outside of that, unless a TV station delivers that type of signal (ASI) to the LCF by running and paying for a fiber line or microwave link (Not usual) it's all OTA. This is becoming less common sense ATT took over as most of the LCF's in ATT territories have moved to ATT properties to save cash on renting space at local TV stations. This is good as it allows ATT to keep expenses down.

Some areas have moved to locations co located with Uverse where Uverse gets an ASI feed it's shared with DirecTV. Uverse also used a mix of ASI and OTA. Some providers are willing to provide an ASI link and handoff to ATT, whereas others don't want that expense and are ok with OTA being the primary delivery mechanism. It all boils down to what the provider agrees with ATT and what's available to them at the LCF site.

Generally, the ASI feed is the same feed that is going to the transmitter with sub channels included. Very useful for those markets where the TV station is a dual affiliate IE CBS/FOX, etc. That is not always the case though and there are times where DirecTV does get a better signal from the local affiliate that's better than the OTA. Generally when there is an ASI signal available, DirecTV takes that signal first, and uses OTA as a backup. It's all dependent upon what's contractually written though with the affiliate. DirecTV does not get a raw HDSDI feed.

DirecTV takes that affiliate signal and recompresses into both MPEG4 HD and MPEG2 SD and then that signal is sent to the regional uplink facility where it's multiplexed, the video signal is then encrypted and ancillary data is added for ad insertion / guide data, etc., (made DirecTV's signal) and uplinked to your home.

Generally speaking though ...

Do you know if the local TV feeds collected at an LCF which are destined for final uplink through a regional uplink facility go directly to that regional facility for format conversion, encryption, ad insertion, etc., then uplink? And DIRECTV monitors and controls the various processes along the signal chain through remote links back to the main broadcast centers at the LABC and CRBC?

Or are all the locally collected feeds first sent to either of the two main broadcast centers the LABC or CRBC, for monitoring and processing and then back out to the RCFs for uplink (except for those locals uplinked from the broadcast centers themselves of course)?

CRBC, and LABC are also regional uplink facilities even though they are also main broadcast centers. The signal goes from the LCF to it's designated RUF which could also be LABC or CRBC among the others. The signal processing happens at the RUF. Also, one RUF may do the MPEG 4 and another may do MPEG2 by design. There are special circumstances where CRBC may get a feed and send it to the appropriate RUF but it's only under emergency circumstances where an alternate feed is available. Everything is monitored in the complete chain, so if there is an issue with a particular piece of equipment, it's known where that failure is and action can be taken to fix it. Everything has a backup. Issues also can be identified even before it hits any of DirecTV's equipment, IE: an issue with the providers signal.

In my case, its the Fox that has been out for all this time, they are ran by the local CBS here, CBS has stayed on, either their contract wasn't up or they resolved it witbout taking them off the air.

When I checked late last night, FOX was still off the air.

Our Fox and CBS is the same here. Even though they are ran by the same station the contracts are not the same and the companies that run the two stations are not the same, and each station is independent of each other even though they have the same engineering team and news team. The CBS is Raycom and the Fox is Tennga. I belive an agreement was just signed with Raycom as our CBS was due to be removed as well but never was during negoations, and eventually the messaging dropped off.

After doing some digging, I found that American Spirit Media is running and ruining WUPW, though I believe that Raycom is in the background still.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

This will be a SAD DAY when this passes ....

They complained the last year that we had a bunch of Blow Outs in the Playoffs ... heres an idea, lets Double the amount of teams and hope for Closer games ... ya right.

This never should have went past 8 teams, 10 at the most.

Now, I have heard that play in games are being talked about, such as #13 plays #24 and so forth, to cut the field down (why cut it down, just don't expand it.)
I'm not sure exactly how thats going to work out or if it was just someone talking.

They were also talking about starting the Season earlier ...

I really don't like the National Championship game being the end of January ... if the Semi Finals are over New Years, thats fine with the Championship game the next week.

There are 68 Power 4 teams, so eventually they will get there I wouldn't imagine ...
