Tech did and good and in under an hour. He came in and went through the check switch. My JBL soundbar was clearly in sight. He comes back in with a big bag with a Polk logo on it and says he wants to demo it for me. I told him he was wasting his time and he should get on to his next appointment. Made me wonder how much tech time is squandered with sales pitches.

That's pretty bizarre. If I had tech come over to install or repair something and they tried to sell me something I'd immediately show them the door.
Well, you better change your thinking because you have the option to not buy but the technician does not have the option to not try to sell. And that's just all there is to it. And that's not me speaking as a manager because I've only been a manager for six months. That policy has been in effect for years And Dish Network consistently ups the ante, meaning the threshold that technicians need to hit pertaining to dollars per work order.

And why not? Everybody on here knows quite well that these cable companies are bleeding customers. Particularly the satellite companies. Companies do not exist to go out of business. They exist to be successful and stay in business, which means keeping revenue coming in.

And we're not talking about the high-pressure sales tactics of the Kirby vacuum cleaner sales person. Technicians are trained to recommend, demo in instances where it's called for and make an offer. All you have to do is say no or you may actually be interested in what they have to offer.

As Dish Network moves more and more into the smart home industry, they are only staying in line with what customers want because we are well over 65% of American homes that have at least one smart home item in their house.

We consistently talk about how more dangerous and violent people are, and the demand for security is rising every day. Dish technicians are trained in recommending security options and conducting professional installations.

Now, that's me talking like a manager lol. But technicians that cannot meet thresholds that are set by the officers, and when I say that meat, I mean that try to meet our losing their jobs so your distain had a technician doing his job and "showing him the door" if he even brings up, the topic of sales is actually jeopardizing his job. And that's just when it comes down to.

I can't see myself changing my thinking on that one. The last thing I want is an ambush sales guy in my house, I didn't sign up for that. Dish would not be on my list of places to buy equipment anyway, other than proprietary stuff.

It's obviously not the tech's fault if the company is poorly run, or not really a viable business and has to resort to podunk practices to try and survive. But he would be the one in my face so he would have to deal with the reaction.

Ambush sales guy?? Really??
"Ever think about better sound out of your TV"? is an ambush??
Get real.

As for the rest of your post, tell us that you don't know what you're talking about without telling us you don't know what you're talking about....

Yes, I'm not expecting a sales job from a tech, so that's an ambush to me. A cheesy one too.

I don't need a tech to tell me about sound bars or anything else anyway. Why would I buy whatever he has rattling around in his truck. Anyone with some sense would do some research and figure out what product and model they would like, not just buy something on a whim that is suggested by a guy with no other motivation than trying to make an extra dollar and please his manager. That's a dumb decision.

From a consumer perspective, Dish does seem poorly run. Customer is bad, and the hack reflects poorly on them and their processes. Anyone can get hacked, but they obviously had put zero thought into the possibility.

Customer service is bad everywhere though. I deal with many companies like Cisco, Dell, Microsoft, Google, Verizon AT&T, and they are all terrible. Everyone tries to fend you off with useless bots, and if you can get a human they are barely trained to do anything other than follow scripts. Things were already deteriorating, but it seems like Covid made things worse.

Because most people do NOT do any research and it's not "rattling around in the truck". People don't know what their options are. They may know what they want but have no idea how to get it. You're one of those people who think that because YOU do something, everyone obviously does it. That's not how it works.

As for the hack, hackers evolve as protection evolves. Your comment is naive. Matter of fact, you're entire post is naive. Go look up the companies that have been hit with ransomware attacks. You may be shocked at who and how many they're are. Bank of America was hit. You think a friggin bank is lax on cybersecurity?? Gimme a break.

People don't know how to find a store or a website to buy stuff? Seems unlikely. I think most people like to price shop at least.

Yes, people get hacked on a daily basis. But if you lose every PC and are affected for as long as Dish was, then something is very wrong. I kind of doubt BoA customer service was offline for anything like as long. And get off my lawn.

Do you think the average customer, who demographically these days is in their 60s and older knows anything about home security, surround sound or how to install it???
Please. You look a this from the wrong angle. Do you know who buys Surround Sound the most?? Old people with hearing issues. Do you think some 80-year-old can climb a ladder or have a clue how to install security cameras? And do you honestly believe that in an industry that's bleeding customers - industry-wide, there wouldn't be a way to generate more revenue? You DO know that the primary function of a business is to make money, right?

And no one said anything about not price shopping, Customers are free to and do look up prices on the stuff the tech is offering and the prices are normally the same, or less or even if slightly higher, buying them in a store or online doesn't include installation; or you can call the Geek Squad who charge $150.00 just to ring your doorbell.

Customer: We've been thinking about a camera doorbell.
Dish Tech: We happen to do that.

Customer: I want to wall mount my TV but I have no idea how to that.
Dish Tech: I do and can do it right now

Customer: I can't hear my TV
Dish Tech: I can fix that.

Customer: My WiFi is useless on the 2nd floor:
Dish Tech: I can solve that problem,

Customer: I hate all these extension chords
Dish Tech: I have something for that

Now tell me where the problem is?

Also, would you rather Dish have just paid the ransom and allowed the hackers to keep control of their files?
And I hate to tell you this, but Dish is global. With offices, services and facilities around the world.
And you're right about BoA because they paid the ransom. The highest ransom ever paid and STILL had to rebuild their systems to replace what the hackers STILL had control of.

Many of those "in their 60s and older" customers, like me, have been doing electronics for longer than you have been alive. It's pretty disingenuous of you to think we are incapable of basic installations like installing a door bell camera, mounting a tv, etc. These are all things I, and many others, are perfectly capable of doing.

At the end of the day I absolutely love that we carry all these products and love when the customer gets what they need and are happy about it. However I disagree with the way dish pushes us to sell more and more and care more about sales than actual service. I'm actually about to lose my job because of it. I take care of customers first then offer solutions but in my area people just don't have money to spend and because of that I can't get raises and am close to being let go because I'm the only tech in my office, so they will shut the whole office down.

I have a question, who is liable for the service like providing warranty should a product failed since wouldn't the customer have issues when dealing with the manufacturer?

It sucks but that's what dish has done to its techs. I actually have a phone interview on Thursday for a local state farm contractor. Kind of ironic though potentially leaving one job because of sales to applying to another sales job lol.

Generally any warranty will be through the manufacturer. Just like buying at a store. They shouldn't really have any issue with the manufacturer as at this point I believe all of our non dish products are no longer dish exclusive.

A good salesman can sell anything!

Or so I hear.

I believe the first rule of salesmanship is: Once you've made the sale, STOP TALKING! All you can do at that point is lose the sale. We had a guy who never took it to heart. He was out to prove how brilliant he was to the customer.

He left us later, trying to steal a list of all our customers to give to his next employer, a competitor of ours. I stopped that. He went over my head, AND I WAS BACKED BY THE HIGHER UPS! Well, both of them. I guess they saw instantly that the only reason for getting that was not good. He quit that day. And the grass was decidedly NOT greener on the other side of the fence. Schadenfreude.

With a store, I think one of the advantages is you can return it if you changed your mind or even for the warranty period after the return period is over, you can bring it back to the store and they would be the one who deals with the manufacturer. Hopefully there is a invoice and receipt as some manufacturers are very picky.

Many of those "in their 60s and older" customers, like me, have been doing electronics for longer than you have been alive.…
As be part of that demographic, I would whole heartedly agree with with this part of the statement. I do my research, understand to tasks at hand, and do all my own work/installs, etc. and am completely comfortable with all the technological efforts. However…
No, not many have. You may have. You may know people who have but MOST people in their 60's and above - which is YOUNG for the customer base now - do not and no offense, but for the past 10 years at about 3-5+ truck rolls a day, I'm going to guess I have seen people in those age groups, not just from every background, but just more overall.
Folks like me in this demographic are, in my experience, 1 in a 1000, or rarer. And this is true being in the high-tech San Francisco Bay area. Most folks in this age group are either mildly inept to completely incompetent with the current technological world. And that's not meant to a knock on them. Rather, they just didn't grow up as a dyed-in-the-wool techno geek like I did. They mostly live comfortably In their 1970/1980/1990 lives because that's what they know and were use to. When they need help with the current technological world, they're more that happy to pay for it because either they don't have the skills, the tools, or just don't have the inclination to learn how to do it themselves. (or my per group friends call on me to help them out and I get a big plate of cookies or free beer! ;)).

This isn't a new dynamic. This techno schism Has been true for for every generational transition. The only difference is transitions happen in a few short decades for what use to take hundreds of years.

Take solace in the fact you/I/we get to be special in that, even though we may get old in body, we stay young and fresh in mind.

Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

Have you tried a new power brick on your Amiko? It's slim pickings out there anymore. The FTA market in the US has pretty much been abandoned.

This would likely be your best bet, and Rick is a good seller. I've never had any issues with him:

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

It's simple math. You take the price and divide by the number of ounces and come up with the price per ounce. I find it hard to believe that Walmart's computers can't carry out simple division.

The division isn't the problem, the inputs are. On the Starbucks pods, $9.22 @ $3.35/oz works out to 2.75 oz, but the box is 1.94 oz. So either the system has the wrong weight on file, or the unit price is left over from an older price of about $6.50 that never got updated. Garbage in, garbage out. Walmart's had unit-pricing data problems before, too - in 2024 they paid $1.64M to settle with New Jersey after inspectors found 2,000+ instances of unit prices using the wrong unit of measure.

Wrong unit of measure? Having a hard time believing that or were they conflating solid and fluid ounces (stupid US measuring system).

The first two coffees aren't off on the same amount, so likely the unit price is linked to some previous price. Now I have to *bleeping* double check more math? Does anyone check anything anymore? Bad enough in the professional world having to QA/QC a third party's work. Don't want to have to do that in the grocery store now too! Not with the absurd measures that are used in the US. Is that unit price for blueberries in ounces or pints...

First world problems, but man... argh!!!

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.
It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

with a Seat belt as last resort.
According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.

Well, the over the shoulder support is better, but would require reconfiguring the cars.
Jimbo
Heres an article from the Akron Beacon ... seeing Six Flags has bought Cedar Point and Kings Island, they are included ...
I said earlier that Cedar Point doesn't use this type of seat restraint ... well, it does use it, But the difference is, the ones up here ALSO have the Over the shoulder restraint as well ... like I was suggesting that they should have used with the Goliath.

One of the new(er) one at Cedar point the Gate Keeper, uses the Clam shell .. I have rode it many times and have Mostly felt secure, that ride will stop you part way on the ride and you just hang, till the ride is ready to continue ... I typically ride the Front Car ... when its getting ready, you ARE hanging, in the car, looking down .... it would require 2 separate restraint systems to unlock at the same time to possibly get out of it.

Didn't see a thread like this so I figured why not start one. This is about natural supplements. If you aren't into supplements, fine, but please let those of us who do want to discuss this discuss it.

The first one I wanted to mention has been a real life changer. I'm 62 and still do all of my own install work at my business....also do all the yard work at the house. A few years ago I started noticing that I was losing my range of movement, it was even getting hard to bend over and lace up my boots. Almost got stuck in an attic because I couldn't get turned around once the work was done. Didn't think much of it and figured with age comes stiffness that was only going to get worse as time went on.
It was then that I stumbled across a video which was discussing rotator cuff tears and why they were to prevalent these days. Turns out, the culprit is a simple deficiency in MANGANESE which is key in keeping your tendons flexible. Most anti-biotics strip your body of any manganese it might have had which is why certain anti-biotics, especially those in the Cipro family. I actually knew a man who had two tendons tear while on that stuff.
Went to Amazon and ordered some manganese. Now it took a while, it wasn't instant, but gradually I have regained all of my flexibility. I can bend over and touch my toes while standing with no pain and putting on my boots is no longer a chore.
Pretty cheap too. The bottle I ordered was a 200 ct for under $13. They said to take double the normal dose for the first month because most people are severely lacking, then go to one a day.

Not sure if this would qualify as a supplement but here goes: When I meet someone who is in their 90s and doing very well healthwise I always ask what they attribute their longevity to. Out of all the people I questioned, there was only ONE thing that they ALL did. They all drank some apple cider vinegar daily....usually before bed. You can water it down all you want. Who knows why, but I do it. You want to buy the organic type with the mother.

Chia Seeds
Kinda the whole idea is to mention something and explain WHY it is something we might want to add to our daily routine.
This is what I got from google. Looks like I'm going to be adding them, thanks

Key Health Benefits
    • Digestive Health: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides nearly 10 grams of fiber, which promotes regular bowel movements, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps prevent constipation. [1, 2]
    • Heart and Cardiovascular Support: Rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—an essential plant-based omega-3 fatty acid—chia seeds can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides, and improve cholesterol profiles. [1, 2, 3]
    • Blood Sugar Regulation: The combination of soluble fiber and protein slows down carbohydrate digestion, preventing sharp blood sugar spikes after meals. [1, 2]
    • Weight Management: When soaked in liquid, chia seeds absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in water. The resulting gel expands in the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and curbing appetite. [1, 2, 3]
    • Bone Strength: They contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for maintaining bone density. [1, 2, 3]
    • Antioxidant Protection: Compounds like chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid help fight cellular damage from free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation. [1, 2, 3]

I've always been super interested in things space related so this is a pretty cool event coming up. Nov 18, 2026 early in the morning, Voyager 1 will reach the distance of one full light day from Earth. Took almost 50 yrs. I was 13 when it launched.

Isn't that insane!!!
To reach the nearest galaxy to ours, at its present speed, will take another 44 billion years.
