From the public notice:

Report No. SAT-01355 Friday October 26, 2018 Space Station Applications Accepted for Filing Satellite Policy Branch Information The applications listed below have been found, upon initial review, to be acceptable for filing. The Commission reserves the right to return any of the applications if, upon further examination, it is determined that the application is not in conformance with the Commission's rules or its policies. Consideration of each satellite application in this Public Notice may depend on the Commission's action on another satellite application earlier in the queue. Petitions, oppositions, and other pleadings filed in response to this notice should conform to Section 25.154 of the Commission's rules, unless otherwise noted. 47 C.F.R. § 25.154. For more information concerning this Notice, contact the Satellite Division at 202-418-0719; TTY 1-888-835-5322. SAT-RPL-20180913-00071 E S3039 Replacement Satellite Application (no new frequency) Date Filed: 09/13/2018 20:05:34:95300 DIRECTV Enterprises, LLC DIRECTV Enterprises, LLC, requests authority to construct, deploy, and operate the T16 space station at the102.70° W.L. orbital location. The T16 space station will provide fixed-satellite service, direct-to-home service, and broadcasting satellite service using the following frequency bands: 17.3-17.7 GHz, 18.3-18.59 GHz and 19.7-20.2 GHz (space-to-Earth); and 24.75-25.15 GHz, 28.35-28.6 GHz, 29.25-29.29 GHz, and 29.5-30 GHz (Earth-to-space). The T16 space station will use the 12.2-12.7 GHz and 17.3-17.8 GHz frequency bands for telemetry, tracking, and command operations. The T16 space station will be capable of providing direct broadcast satellite service in the 12.2-12.7 GHz (space-to-Earth) and 17.3-17.8 GHz (Earth-to-space) frequency bands, but DIRECTV does not seek operating authority to provide such service. DIRECTV requests a waiver, to the extent necessary, of the Commission's milestone and bond rules, 47 CFR §§ 25.164 and 25.165, in connection with the use portions of the 12.2-12.7 GHz and 17.3-17.8 GHz frequency for telemetry, tracking, and command operations.

If I'm reading this correctly, The T16 space station will be capable of providing direct broadcast satellite service in the 12.2-12.7 GHz (space-to-Earth) and 17.3-17.8 GHz (Earth-to-space) frequency bands, that means it will have the capability of doing KU plus reverse band?

If this goes to the 101 then DirecTV would have the ability to do reverse band from 101, unless they keep T15 at 101 and then move T16 to 103.
4 Replies · 1568 views
S
No, there is no reverse band license at 101 so Directv cannot do reverse band from there. Plus none of Directv's LNBs can receive reverse band from 101 even if it was possible for them to get a license for it.

They built BOTH T15 & T16 with Ku, Ka lo, Ka hi, and reverse band so that they can go to either 101 (for Ku) or 99/103 (for Ka/reverse band) They can't use (no licenses are offered by the FCC for) reverse band from 101 and Ku from 99/103.

They ARE licensed for Ka lo & Ka hi from 101, but again none of Directv's LNBs can receive that so it is highly unlikely it will ever be used. They may only have licensed that to prevent someone else from doing so and potentially interfering with their Ka at 99/103, since they prefer to keep their satellites closer to 101 (i.e. more like 99.25 & 102.75 than actually on 99 & 103)
goaliebob99
Correct.. Having the ability to do it versus licensing to do is two different things. I was getting at the capability part. They did some testing of RB at 101 in 08 for the anticipation of RB. https://ecfsapi.fcc.gov/file/6520035950.pdf Swapping out LNB's at this point should they decide to get licensed for it shouldn't be too much of an issue as I can't imagine that there are that many reverse band LNB's out there at this point. I'm just curious if the satellite would be able to use all of the payloads KU, KA Lo, KA hi and reverse band simultaneously. or if it's limited in its configuration that if it's doing KA it cant do KU, or if it's doing KU it can't do XYZ ect.

It would actually be cool to see DirecTV do all four bands from a single slot. I'm wondering if they did get licensed and was able to do it if there would be any interference to 99 or 103 from the 101. The other aspect behind the move would be the possibility of additional bandwidth to DirecTV for additional services or even leasing of the space. If they have the bird there, it's a potential future proof to add additional capacity should they get licensed for it.
S
They will never license reverse band from 101, they are allocated 4* apart. Likewise they will never license Ku from 99 or 103 (and that would kill reception of 101, Ku is too low frequency for that to work without a larger dish) There was some discussion of allowing Ku in "tweener" slots at 4.5 spacing (so 105.5 between 101 & 110) but Directv did some testing and found that would be a bad idea - misaligned dishes would suffer (less of an issue today since they are aligned better due to the need to pick up 99/103)
S
FWIW, the reason they build satellites with all bands they are licensed for is so they can take over at any slot. They would lose spot beams if they lost D11, D12 or D14, but they could shift things around and cover the bigger DMAs - the smaller DMAs (i.e. bottom 70 out of the 210) they'd just say "too bad" and offer them a free OTA adapter or transition to one of their streaming products. At least they'd lose fewer customers in smaller DMAs from those who couldn't get OTA or stream, but it simply wouldn't be feasible to build a replacement for spotbeam capacity on one of those three if it failed.

Other than OTA, once T16 is in orbit they'd survive the loss of any of their satellites from a CONUS perspective with minimal interruption. Since T16 is likely to be the last satellite they ever launch, that's a good place to be - a much better place than Dish is in. In the late 2020s probably D11 or D12 will be getting near to running out of fuel, and they'll just shift things around to cover the loss of the locals, and keep going until another one fails. When that happens they'll either consolidate into fewer satellites (which may be feasible if it turns out there was never much 4K and they can use reverse band for some HD channels, or there are fewer channels overall than there are today which I think is likely) but eventually they won't have sufficient capacity and l expect when they know that point is coming they'll announce a shut down of satellite service in the early 2030s.

This thread is a place to discuss the 4K events that appear on channel 540. We are getting, at this point, one college football game a week. Let's hope there is more coming.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

This will be a SAD DAY when this passes ....

They complained the last year that we had a bunch of Blow Outs in the Playoffs ... heres an idea, lets Double the amount of teams and hope for Closer games ... ya right.

This never should have went past 8 teams, 10 at the most.

Now, I have heard that play in games are being talked about, such as #13 plays #24 and so forth, to cut the field down (why cut it down, just don't expand it.)
I'm not sure exactly how thats going to work out or if it was just someone talking.

They were also talking about starting the Season earlier ...

I really don't like the National Championship game being the end of January ... if the Semi Finals are over New Years, thats fine with the Championship game the next week.
