Univision on Tuesday said that Dish Network has decided not to renew its carriage agreement for Univision Deportes Network, broadending the dispute between the two companies.

Dish dropped Univision's lifestyle cable networks in April and its main channel in June. In recent statements, Dish has indicated little interest in bringing the channels back.

I feel like Dish is saving a lot of money for itself by severing ties with Univision and HBO. So why is there still a $5 price increase on most of these packages?

If these programming moves were really for the benefit of us, then shouldn't they be rewarding us with a flat (0%) increase next year to show us just how "valued" we are?

Just playing devil's advocate here.

If there is a $5 increase coming in 2019, I think more will jump ship. We lose channels and we may more. That is not fair. I could understand an increase if Dish kept Univision, HBO, etc and we had to pay more. The always excuse is that Dish has these disputes to keep our pricing down. Okay, if that is the case, then Dish does not have the channel, and we continue to pay more? Where is a logic in that? I read a lot about the cord cutters and they pay much less. I am hoping as more channels are available in streaming packages, I can move in that direction in time, if prices continue to go up, especially with the loss of channels.

I have been saying that for years.

If your going to raise the rates anyways, just pay the price increase for the channel and pass the costs to the customer.

The smart thing Dish could do right now is say no price increases for 2019 due to the programming disputes. Thank you for being a dish customer and thank you for standing behind us while we fight to keep prices down.

But if they raise rates anyways, these disputes are nothing more than putting more money in their pockets.

So glad I don't sell dish anymore and have to be in the middle with my customers when it comes to programming disputes.

I'm afraid I have to agree with you. If the disputes were truly about "defending the customer," then those savings should be passed on. At least this time they should be.

My parents are jumping ship after their current billing cycle ends (December 27). Their loyalty credits are falling off and Dish won't renew them. They are going to Directv Now. My brother and I are buying them 2 Fire Sticks for Christmas to get it done.

When I called to schedule the disconnect this afternoon, the representative was very insulting and demeaning. He claimed that Dish had "invested" thousands of dollars into my parents' account over the course of the 20 years they have been customers by providing loyalty credits.

When I told him which service they were switching to he said they were making a bad decision. He then refused to terminate the account. I had to ask for a supervisor to get it done. I was shocked by the experience.

In all the years I have been a Dish customer, I've never sensed so much desperate intestinal fortitude from Retentions as I did today. And the fact he refused to disconnect service and insulted me and my family was completely unacceptable.

I had one service years ago that I streamed on a computer, before the streaming sticks. I tried to cancel the service after the first year only to find, they did not cancel it after telling me they did. I tried a second time and paid another month. After that I was billed again. I called my credit card company and told them about the issue. They tried to cancel the service for me on their end and got the same result. How the issue was solved, was for the credit card company to issue me a new card & number so they could no longer bill me. That worked and the credit card company even reversed the last month of the service for me. Sometimes a consumer has to go to extreme measures.

I had to cancel my Bell Expressvu account the same way. Of course, in my case, I was getting that service through a broker, and my broker had been sued and put out of business. Add to that the fact that Bell did a Smart Card swap at that time. My old Smart Card had expired, and I had no way to get a new replacement for it, so I was not even receiving the service that Bell continued to charge me for.

Which one?

I remember going through Tv M and dealing with Cathy.

Eventually I remember her just giving me the account to manage on my own.

I remember my credit card expiring and just forgetting about the account.

It got too expensive anyways. I used to have the theme packs and after the exchange rate it was $22/mo.

Once it went to the $80/mo packages it was no longer affordable.

I remember getting it for the Space channel and for some other reason that I refused to subscribe to Directv at the time.

I remember getting Directv in 2009, paid for it for 3 years before I had to dump dish (because they dumped me) and made it my primary source for tv in my house.

Which one?
Can-Am Satellite. I think they did business as Largo Communications, or something like that. It has been too many years for me to remember the exact name now. I tried calling another broker (Freeway Support International) to see if they could move the receiver to a new account and get me a new Smart Card to get it reactivated, but there was nothing they could do, either. I would have had to start over again with a whole new receiver. I had just gone through that with Largo, right before they went out business, when my old standard-def receiver died and I had to purchase a "new" receiver (which turned out to be an older model HD receiver which was also about to die due to the upcoming Smart Card swap) to replace it. I was not about to purchase another receiver with no assurance that it would continue to work for any significant period of time, so I stopped fooling with Canadian satellite services completely, and never looked back.
Claude Greiner
Yup, I remember can am, freeway and Tvm.

I don't think Tvm ever got busted, but saw the writing on the wall and quietly stopped operations.

Speaking of grey market, Dish really didn't care back in the early days. They only started enforcing things when they realized that people where account stacking and they could crack down and hopefully turn 1 account into 2-3 accounts.

The only thing Dish didn't consider is their audits irritated a lot of people and they cancelled Dish all together and went with Directv

I used to have Star Choice. I had a friend in Alberta that I bought an HD receiver through him. Since he had a large enough package he could have up to 5 receivers without any extra fee. I had his package until be passed away nearly a year ago. the Dish is still up and the receiver gets what is in open key, which is only 2-3 channels. The old 4DTV receivers got the same open key stuff, since we could not sub to a Canadian company directly from the U.S. I thought about a broker after my friend passed away, but in checking the cost alone for a decent bunch of channels, too expensive. I doubt since the old receiver was tied to my friends old account, I do not think I could authorize it anyway. Add to that with the new channels on Anik G1, where everyone is migrating to, in a few years I may not be able to sub to much. Plus we have much more variety with Dish. A better deal and more channels.

Finally got my parents and uncle connected online aka now "cordshavers" and they love it. Watching what they want when they want it and no ads. We even got the HBO add-on from Amazon and my uncle likes it better he can watch any movie there on-demand. Now my mother is considering dropping Dish as the price increase, less channels and no sports "she likes baseball" and going with a cordcutting streaming service.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

I'm on H713 on the Hopper and P15403 on the Hopper Plus. It shows internet connection issues and doesn't finish loading the various services. I see the "loading circle going around. Sometimes I get a message saying that the service is having trouble loading my content and to check the internet connection.

Both, and they just made it official with a multiyear deal that also includes TV Everywhere authentication for the DAZN app, and commercial distribution.

DIRECTV, the premier provider of digital television entertainment in the United States, and DAZN, the world's leading sports entertainment platform, today announced a new multi-year distribution agreement for local telecasts of Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, and San Antonio Spurs games for DIRECTV streaming, satellite, and U-verse customers in each team's respective NBA-designated home territories.

These DAZN telecasts will be available to DIRECTV customers who subscribe to the Choice or higher packages and to U-verse TV customers who subscribe to the U200 or higher package. Each of DAZN's team services provides live pregame, postgame, and in-game coverage for the respective team.

In the coming weeks, customers who receive access to these teams via DIRECTV will also be able to login to the DAZN platform at no additional cost using their DIRECTV login credentials.

This agreement also provides distribution rights to each of the five NBA teams to all of DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS' thousands of sports bars, restaurants, fitness clubs, and other commercial venues located within each team's respective region.

Monday 11/2 is a full slate for NBA League Pass as all 30 teams are playing and 14 out of 15 total games are on NBALP. Only one national TV game on Peacock/NBCSN (Thunder @ Cavs).

DirecTV is even having to use several MLB EI channels (from 745-748) and a NHL CI (770) channel to fit all of them in the guide close together. 5 games at 7:30 ET, 3 games at 8 ET, 2 games at 8:30 ET, 1 game at 9 ET, 3 games at 10 ET. Luckily NHL CI is light on Monday (3 games on CI).

DirecTV is providing both broadcast feeds for all League Pass games except Hornets, Magic, Bucks & Raptors that night. These are all teams that have local broadcasts via a OTA channel which is on spotbeams and have streaming deals (DTC) that are not exclusive DAZN teams which DirecTV just signed a deal with (à la Spurs, Grizzlies, Cavs, Pacers & T'Wolves). Its also very common that we don't get Raptors broadcast very often from TSN or Sportsnet Ontario on League Pass.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.

What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.

QFT. Of course, my preference involves a curb and some kicking.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

WHAT ABOUT THE INTERNET PART OF IT. NO ONE WANTS A BOX CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET EITHER.

That would be handy. Download the latest RNA snippets that can be updated over 5G and no more shots! You're a Genius!

I want it and I have to have it.

I can neuter the phoning home with adguard home so it won't be doing that in my castle but I prefer without Internet so that my TVs in the house don't turn into e-waste

It states the average amount they are under water is OVER $7,000. :eek

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.
