Orby TV created to help Dish Network and DirecTV merger?

The paranoid side of me wonders if Orby TV was created to show regulators that a merger between Dish Network and DirecTV wouldn't hurt consumers, since another satellite television provider now exists.

I thought it was because DirecTV and Dish are phasing out SD channels, and eventually, satellite signals altogether. That would leave a lot of remote areas begging for TV. Plus, the low price would be attractive in more developed areas, too.

There is a distinct difference between phasing out SD channels and removing SD duplicates of HD channels. DISH has shown that they have a workable plan to make this happen with their Eastern Arc initiative. DIRECTV is still trying to figure out how they can use their satellite constellation without alienating a large number of customers that aren't prepared for Ka in their RVs, tailgate setups and homes away from home where the significantly larger dish isn't readily installed. DIRECTV has to figure out how to replace SD channels on 101 with HD channels. AT&T doesn't outwardly seem to be giving DIRECTV the time of day in this regard.

I believe most satellite and cable providers are not expecting subscribers after the next 15 years. I do not have much confidence in broadband as a primary TV service. Way too many things that go wrong on networks.

All they need to do is go MPEG4 and put all the significant HD feeds at 101.

All the PPV, sports, and other garbage channels they can leave on 103/99

But they can't do anything till they get rid of all the SD equipment.

If Directv wanted to get this done they would be more focused on receiver, then antenna upgrades.

They need to get rid of all the SD equipment first and convert to MPEG4 first.

Once everyone is on MPEG4, then start removing the SD feeds.

If they kept about 100-150 of the main channels like ESPN, Fox News, HBO and discovery on 101, they wouldn't piss off all the campers and tail gaters.

The SD feeds needs to go away

DIRECTV's HD feeds are already MPEG4 and they're still so much bigger than their SD MPEG2 feeds that this isn't a workable solution. Ku would require less error correction but no where near a 1:1 trade for MPEG2 SD

Everyone acknowledges this but AT&T seems to be largely unwilling to make the necessary adjustments. Not having a fallback constellation as DISH created has made this more difficult but it needs to get done.

I don't see eastern are as a fall back. More of a bandwidth issue for providing locals

However you perceive it, it will be much more difficult to for DIRECTV to do their transition as they're forced to upgrade (or jettison) all of the Ku customers before they can proceed with conversion of the channels at 101W to the new modulation and compression schemes.

I read it as att is pumping all capital into 5G roll out.

The company founders/management are all former directv employee's from the 2000 era. The main sales guy got directv in the bigbox stores back then. He's repeating that again with bestbuy and target.

I would total respectfully disagree with you.
Just guessing I would say I got about 150 cord cutters. They use my fiber network to watch over the top. Its working better then ever and keeps getting better. My customers are extremely happy and some will save over $10,000 over 5 years. But I'm obsessed with having quality upstream peers and private peering direct to offload video. This with making sure the WiFI install is perfect yields a killer over the top video experience.

Am I the only one that hates what Dish did to their mobile app?

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

I've seen it twice. Can't recommend the audio book enough, Ray Porter's performance is amazing and there's so much more in the book than the movie.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

Started watching Undercover Boss again

I had quit watching this show years ago because I ended up more annoyed than entertained. Well......I'm STILL more annoyed than entertained. I DO find it interesting to see how things work behind the scenes at many businesses. What annoys me is how utterly out of touch CEOs are with the companies they run. At the end of almost every episode the head of the company is amazed at how hard the employees have to work and many times have to work around impossible guidelines set forth from headquarters.

I found this one interesting because the new CEO had big plans for this company, Muscle Maker Grill, and it looked like the stores were all pretty busy. Recent history hasn't been good to this company however. I bet the covid lockdowns were the real killer.

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
