With all the posts and such about IPTV being the wave of the future and even to a growing extent, a wave that is ongoing, I thought I would do a month long trial with IPTV only.
Currently I'm on cable with retail Tivo gear and am happy with it, but the bill keeps climbing and I'm not too far away from the end of my bundling 'deal'.

First up is what to replace my cable channel supplier. I did a look at my recording schedules on my main Tivo to determine which channels I have recordings scheduled for. Surprising it was only 9 channels!

So my must have cable channels are AMC, SyFy, TBS, USA, BBC, FX, IFC and Paramount. Other cable channels are watched but not often and the bulk of the others aren't watched at all.

I found that Sling Blue fit the bill. Cheap at $30/month with DVR service and has those 9 channels plus some others I'll watch on rarer occasions. So I'm on a one month trial @$20.

Local channels. These were easy! I've got an antenna that gets some of them, but I've ordered an outdoor one that will get them all. And for DVR, I have a Tivo Bolt with Lifetime service that will handle that quite well.

Premiums are a big part of my current bill and the only way to reduce their impact is to subscribe to them sparingly and binge watch series. Not a big deal to do with streaming.

Sports are an issue for streaming, but I'm a very casual viewer of any sports. Sling Blue has a few sports channels, and are enough to satisfy my appetite for sports.

Add in a few ad-supported services and I'll have more than enough to watch. I also already subscribe to basic Hulu, basic CBS All Access, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Epix. I've also done the 3-year Disney+ deal so that's paid for for 3 years from launch date at a very attractive price. All of those would be subscribed to regardless of moving away from cable or not so are not part of the financials.

I'm doing the month so I can see what impact on internet bandwidth usage it will have. Currently on a 2TB bandwidth cap so I should be OK and see no increase in internet cost.

Financially it looks like this:
Current cableTV : $90 approximately with all taxes & fees.
If I change that to closer match what a streaming/OTA deal would look like, then that would drop to about $50 under the current bundling deal. After the deal drops off I think it would be about $90.

Streaming/OTA:
Sling Blue w/DVR : $30

It seems to be a no brainer to make the switch and it surely is from a financial standpoint. But there is more convenience in cable/sat IMO, and that's worth something.

Downside to all streaming is potential rise in internet bill if bandwidth is exceeded. I'm used to turning on the TV in the early morning and leaving it on until about 10PM. I don't actually watch it that much in the daytime, but it is noise in the house which is nice for those of us that live solo IMO. Usually the TV is tuned to one of the incessant reruns on various channels.

Well, my month long experiment with cord cutting is over. I learned that even doing all streaming a 1TB data cap wasn't going to be an issue. And I learned that cable can be a decent bargain in some case.
So I called Mediacom today and reduced my internet to 100/10 w/1TB cap and TV to 'family video'. Bill went from $197 to $145. Standalone the internet would have been $80, so the TV portion is $60. Family Video is only missing one channel I would like to have on occasion, and that is The Golf Channel.
For premiums, I'll change to occasional subs. For instance, I'll pick up HBO in December if Watchmen gets good reviews and binge watch it. Similarly for the other premiums.
The 1TB cap will be plenty for streaming I will do in addition to what I watch on cable.

Other than a few network shows (decreasing in number all the time) and my local news which we get via OTA, everything we watch is streamed now. The largest amount of data we've ever used is a little over 200GB. I am sure it would be higher if we had children. No surprise there: kids are expensive. ;)

Well the new bill from Mediacom came today and I was very pleasantly surprised. Current one is a mix of old and new and the total was about $142.
Going forward the new will be $131. That's for 100/10 1TB cap internet and Family Video which is a good mix of channels. Missing some RSN's and the Golf channel but those are little watched by me anyway. And of course, all the Premiums. That makes the TV portion about $51/month.

I was checking WHIO's website for another subject and came across this article which may help people that are just starting out with cord cutting. Also at the bottom of the article where the summary is they have a link to what each provider has: How to Get Customer Support From YouTube TV, Hulu and Oth

Finished the 2nd episode tonight. I'm really liking it so far.

Still hate weekly releases though, especially the way Disney and HBO do it waiting until 8pm to premiere it.

Apparently I'm not a big enough nerd🤓 since I did not read every Marvel Comic Book ever published. If I had, I might be comparing the comics' version of events compared to what's transpiring in "Visionquest". So, I am enjoying the series a lot, not weighed down by previous expectations, knowing only the Avengers MCU movies and the "Wandavision" / "Agatha All Along" TV series.

I found the Mr Know-it-All channel from his discussion about "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and he's been gleefully picking these episodes apart, referencing the Marvel comics from the 1939 on. Turns out A.I. has been around since before World War II, at least in the comics. (Robots before that, yes, yes.) This show is going back into the archives.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

SpaceX has held talks with Boost's parent company EchoStar in recent months about launching its own signature wireless service through a deal with the company, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
Musk, the SpaceX CEO, has discussed the deal personally, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month, according to the people. The potential deal may result in SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or SpaceX gaining access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile US, the people said.
Access to those lease agreements would be a coup for SpaceX. The back door would allow Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion. But the proposed service may need consent from those carriers for the service to actually launch, the people said.

Can't remember where or who I saw predict this. :D

It wouldn't surprise me to see Elon soon own all of DISH / Echostar in the future.

Again, why would Musk want a TV Service, specially one that is losing over a million subscribers a year.

Phone service…maybe, but not TV.

Again, if so, why would he want Dish/Sling of all the providers?

He could deliver anything without actually owning, for example, watching the Lions game in my Tesla Y on it's screen via the YT app, while on the way to my future in-laws on Sunday.

Just a guess on my part but there may be some value to aquring to get all the retransmision agreements that are in place even though at some point they need to be renewed

If Musk really wants to buy Boost, he might get a great price once Dish Wireless is out of Chapter 11.

Boost just lost 182,000 subs in the 3rd quarter-

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

I could very well be wrong....it has been a LOT of years but back when I had a 722K it seemed like when you went back to the scan screen that you could just scan again and it would ADD those channels to the previous list or you could delete the previous results and only add the channels from the new scan.

I am not sure about that but I do know that you could manually add additional channels just by entering the actual RF channel number and the older receivers would add the virtual channels to your list

Like I said.....that has been many years ago. Swapped my 722K for a Hopper in 2012.

It does seem like I remember having to delete the existing channels when we did a rescan. Back then our local stations KEPT monkeying around with things and it was non-stop complaints from customers about their channels not coming in. Got so bad that I stopped selling OR installing OTAs....something I had been doing since 1984 so you know it HAD to be pretty bad.

Balls
Bears. Took care of the elite Seahawks defense in a great performance.
NFC North. The entire division is 2 games above .500
Lions. Finally handed an L to that weird Minnesota team. Good vibes for Jack Campbell.
Pitt. Took the lead of the division convincingly.
Bengals vs Titans game. Fireworks game. Not sure it was a well-played game, but it sure was fun. JoeyB with 6 scores... and 4 turnovers.
Denver. They keep winning, man. Payton is a baller of a coach.
Packers. Thorough beatdown of the hard-to-read Panthers.
Jags. Demolished the hapless Colts.
Rams. The Super team finally wins back-to-back games.

Goats
Vikings. Took their first L. I know their D is insane, but their offense is setting back football to the 1950's.
Cowboys. Lost a 2-score lead vs. the Gardner Minshew-led Cards... at home. Embarrassing.
Browns. Playing for the division lead by scoring 6 points.
Bucs vs Falcons game. Setting modern football back to the ice age. Honorable mention to Tua Penix err ... Michael Tagov .... well, you know what I mean.
Bengals fans acting like Burrow just won the MVP after his performance. I get it. 6 scores is awesome. But. He also turned the ball over 4 times and required overtime to beat the 1-win Titans. So spare me the parade.
Chiefs. Not because they lost. It was a close game decided on the last play vs. a divisional rival on the road. That's always rough. But because of their whining over the CLEAR flag they got on the would-be winning play. They are used to getting the calls, and when they don't, they complain. Honorable mention to Mahomes for this quote: "I mean, at the end of the day, you have to go with whatever is called, but a lot of times in those big moments, the little stuff doesn't get called like that"... so you admit it was a penalty?? Just shut up, man.
Colts. They began the fire sale earlier in the week, and it showed. This team is cooked; Daniel Jones should go to the bench, and Steichen will be fired pretty soon.
Chargers. Wow. That's all I got.
Miami. For having the Pats sort of on the ropes and letting them go.
Eagles. Another team that should consider selling some assets. They are going nowhere.

The NFL, for some time, has protected the marquee quarterbacks. Brady, Mahomes, Allen, Burrow - they all get the calls.
The lower tier QBs don't seem to get the same benefit. For instance, some of the hits that Darnold took from Chicago on Monday night would have been a flag frenzy if any of the marquee QBs were hit like that. And I am not in any way a fan of anything Seahawks related. I am a fan of balanced officiating - and that hasn't been the case for a while.

My team is not immune to this - Fred Warner laid some vicious hits in the Commanders game that I thought should have been flagged - one was, but they picked it up.

Not a good look on NFL officials.
