Does anyone know what kind of dish this is? Initially I thought it was a Slimline, but now I am not sure.

The dimensions are approximately 33 3/4" X 24". I am trying to find the focal point. I foolishly removed the 3 LNB's that were mounted and threw them away. I do remember they were segregated and had a multi piece removable fancy cover. Also this setup had a tricky name from either Direct TV or Dish Network. I think this dish might work better than the smaller ones I have saw of the same style for FTA. The LNB in the picture is one I calculated the position using a formula I found online. I have not tried it yet.

You don't have to cover the entire dish with light reflective material, you only need a thin strip that runs top to bottom and side to side on the reflector since that will tell you everything. I've used a laser pointer and some reflective aluminum tape to repair a bent feed on a 2.4m dish on a satellite truck and it worked well but was very time consuming. Here is a method from a friend of mine that will find the focal point and also let you know if the dish is damaged or not suitable for the frequency range you are using. Quite an interesting article! Looks like it wouldn't be that hard to set up.

I see Brct203 beat me to it. :) Sorry had a longer than normal day at work. Anyway, that is the same measurements I got. All the ones I have in my satellite dish junk yard though I notice have "Super DISH" across the face of the dish. I guess the one you have was in a different envorionment or made by a different manufacturer. How long is the rectangular support arm on yours Doorguru?

Don't be sorry! I appreciate your input now and in past posts. You have helped me a lot!

The proportions (Ht,W) on Brct203 's dish does not match mine. Based on his dimensions, it has a slightly different shape.

The total support arm length is 22 1/4 " , measured from the bottom rim to the very end. The arm length itself is 23 7/8". With my experiment today, I think I can get it in the ballpark. I will make the mounting bracket adjustable so I can slide it in and out. Same for the height. IF I can find a signal, I should be able to tweak it by looking at the signal strength.

You sir have the same thing that Brct203 has. Same as mine. A "Super DISH" dish.

I'm not sure that I understand what makes you think it's different...

the dimensions I gave were distances from the white plastic cover of the LNB Feedhorn to the edges of the dish (top and bottom). The reflector size is exactly like the one you have (33 3/4 wide by 24 tall). The arm rectangular tube is also like what you said (22 1/4 from the rim of the reflector, 23 7/8 total).

no worries :) It's all good. Hopefully you'll be able to get that dish working properly. I have 2 of them, and they are decent dishes. I have one fixed on 123W with its original LNB (not so good in general but works really well for KBS World, not sure why), and the other one I had for a while on 34.5W but it was too small. I had used one for 125W at some point but that was also a bit undersized. Definitely very usable on the stronger satellites.

I clamped the LNB on the arm and tried to get it to match your numbers.

The best I could do is 19" and 26 1/4" or 20 1/2" and 27 3/8", in other words when I got one of your measurements right, the other was off. The single hole next to the two mounting holes you mentioned measures 21 1/8" and 27 3/4" . That is where my LNB is mounted in my original picture from post #1. This dish originally had 3 LNB's. Every time I think of how I dropped them in the trash can it makes me feel sick!! :oldfrown

But never-the-less I will figure it out when I temporary mount the dish to the huge pine tree out front. The spring clamp will allow me to slide the LNB up and down. It will be time consuming trying to hit the three adjustments at once, but with a little luck.. I have done it many times before, but did not have to deal with a focal point. The tree is solid and will not flex unless there are high winds. I will mount it on the lower trunk.

I know that everyone here has their method of finding a satellite, but I just wanted to update my progress and explain how I did it. It might just help someone who is new to this hobby someday!

I leveled and mounted the dish to the pine tree. I left the elevation as it was when it was used for Dish Network. I guesstimated the LNB position/skew and clamped it on with the spring clamp. I hooked up the tone meter and swung it west. Got a loud tone at what turned out to be 121 degrees west. Normally I would do a scan to see what satellite I was pointing to, but Dish Network told me on their test screen. "You are viewing Orbital 121 test screen." This satellite happens to have two transponders with the same or close to the same frequency as 97 west, which was what my meter was set to. I then tweaked the LNB position. The optimum spot turned out to be where I had it in my picture at post #1 of this thread, 22.5". I originally determined this by using the formula, f = ( D * D ) / ( 16 * c ) I was surprised that the formula worked for a dish like this. I used the widest diameter for the formula. The position happened to be the first single hole from the end of the LNB arm. The location of the LNB appears to be very forgiving.. a half inch either way had no affect on the signal. Knowing which satellite I was on gave me an idea as to where I would have to point to get to 97 west, so after raising the elevation, I eventually hit my target satellite with a decent signal of about 60. I did a scan and got about 120 channels using the portable meter. This will more than likely increase when it gets connected to a receiver as will the signal strength. It did the last time anyway. I think I will try adjusting the skew by rotating the dish. This will allow the RG connector to point down and be more out of the weather. I don't know if doing that will affect the signal strength though.

It's nice to have the portable meter with the screen, but without that cheap tone meter, it would have been a lot harder and time consuming!

Well, that the PF-dish equation "works" for a dish like yours, would be an exaggeration, IMHO.
But it might bring you in the neighborhood of the focal distance, that is right.
I've seen enough dishes where the LNB phase center was not exactly at the focal point, that "worked" anyway.

How is the present LNB-position, as compared to the two lengths Brct203 mentioned?
From the center of the plastic surface of the linear feed (square wave guide which is centered on the arm while 119W circular is a bit to the side), I measured 26 1/4 inches to the upper edge of the dish, and 20 1/2 from the bottom edge.

I was using the spring clamp so I could slide it all along the bracket and that position that I chose was as good as it got and I already had a hole drilled, so I bolted it down. If you read my previous post you will know that I could not make those distances Brct203 mentioned work. He also mentioned in his post that the same first single hole from the two original LNB monting holes was the focal point that he used previously on the dish pictured in his post. That was the position that worked.

BTW Looking at your picture, it looks like your LNB is aiming rather high on the dish. It should be aiming below the center of the dish!
But maybe I'm deceived by the picture angle.

I chose neither one.. This was explained in the thread. Maybe you missed it.

Brct203 said:

AND I QUOTE:

"I have used that dish with a LNBF and the same bracket as you are using, and found that the existing hole (the next one after the 2 holes that held the original feed) works well for attaching that bracket. You can see the mark left by that bracket on the arm on the picture below. "

END OF HIS QUOTE

The LNBs currently on his dish are not mounted as quoted above. They are mounted at the dimensions he told me.

"26 1/4 inches to the upper edge of the dish, and 20 1/2 from the bottom edge."

Those two values would not intersect at my LNB. That is why I didn't use them. I used the first single hole, as mentioned before in this thread.

This reply to you, by me, also explained it:

"If you read my previous post you will know that I could not make those distances Brct203 mentioned work. He also mentioned in his post that the same first single hole from the two original LNB mounting holes was the focal point that he used previously on the dish pictured in his post. "

As far as the LNB height itself, none of the pictures shows it, but I dropped it about an inch lower using the up and down bracket adjustment.

Look at this picture from post #1. The arm is sitting pretty low. I tried sliding the LNB back and fourth from the dish and even tilting the LNB down. The signal never got any better. This is how this dish has always worked, even when it was Dish Network. Has a strong signal now and did back then.

Yes, I think I miss/missed your point.

I would go for the best possible match to those two values that Brct203 gave, as you can deduct from my earlier post. Regardless of holes in the arm.

But I don't seem to be able to understand exactly what you are doing.

DoorGuru,

I need to add that while I used that dish with the bracket bolted in the hole that I mentioned, I eyeballed the position of the LNBF so that it visually matches the position of the old feed and fine-tuned it for performance but did not measure the position of the LNBF. So it could be that it was also a bit off for me too.
One thing worth trying is having 2 stings attached to the top and bottom rims (with a binder clip for example) with a mark at the lengths that I indicated, and where they meet when both marks are aligned would be the position of the front of the old feed. position the new LNBF so that it's close to that point. Arrange that it can still slide in its holder so that you can adjust it for best signal

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.
they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

Really excited for this season with Kentucky having a new coach and some really exciting recruits. Probably won't last long, but here's hoping this season is great.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

There are 68 Power 4 teams, so eventually they will get there I wouldn't imagine ...

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Theres more NFL info in the Pub section than in the Sports/NFL thread.

IF they go to 24 teams, and it looks like they will soon ....
Do we Really want Teams with 3 and 4 losses in the Playoffs ?
Is a 3-4 Loss team one thats able to win 4-5 more games against Top teams ?
