Howdy guys/gals,
Been wanting to setup a FTA dish for probably 15 years, and this summer (two weeks before the lockdowns started!) closed on a house, so I finally can! I dabble dabble in electronics, and ham radio, so this always felt like something I'd get a kick out of. I've got a spot with a full unobstructed view of the southern sky, and after looking at the geosynchronous arch no trees to worry about in the future. No HOA, and no city ordinances to worry about either.

I plan on doing most of the installation myself, and had a couple questions. Does the mounting pole double as a ground, or do I need to drive a second ground line? How deep does the mounting pole need to be in the ground? I've got limestone a few feet down, though depth varies a bit across the lot.

As far as post installation, I know some receivers can direct a dish rotator, but do I need to purchase an external box as well for that, or does it pass the signal through the coax?

How does latitude affect signal? I'm assuming that closer to the equator puts less distance, and less atmosphere between your dish and the satellite, but how drastically does that translate to dish and signal size? I'm in the Dallas area, so fairly southern.

Final question, how do I even get a C-Band dish in 2020? I'd prefer used as the new ones I've seen are a bit spendier then I'm willing ask my wife to let me part with on a hobby. Frankly I'm also not sure where to even find one aside from just driving around outside town and trying to peep a glance at peoples backyards.

The mounting pole does NOT double as a ground, at least not according to code. I think part of the reason is that you typically paint the pole and/or bury it in concrete, so it really does not make good contact with a ground. What you should do instead is ground the pole using a ground wire (preferably copper) to a ground rod maybe two to four feet from the pole and then continue that ground wire to the ground rod under your electric meter and clamp it to that ground rod (alternately you can use a split bolt type connector to connect the ground wire to the ground wire going to your house ground rod, that comes from your house electric panel). What you are not supposed to have is two independent ground rods that are not connected to each other.

For the purposes of complying with code it is more important to run a ground wire from the dish to your house ground than to have a ground rod near the dish but I like having a ground rod close to the dish for a couple of reasons, first in the event that lightning hits the dish it gives it a more direct path to ground, and second it just gives you a better ground system for both your home and your dish. In fact if it were a fairly long run I'd be inclined to drive a ground rod every 25 feet or so just to dissipate any differential currents. But that is just me. One pro tip, find out where the local electricians get their electrical supplies - you may be able to find ground rods and the clamps that attach to them at a significantly lower price than what you will find in a big box store. Although if you have a local scrap metal salvage yard it's not unheard of to find used ground rods there, just make sure the galvanized coating is not too badly damaged. Speaking of scrap metals yards, those can also be great places to find pieces of metal pipe of the same diameter as a dish pole (typically 3½ inches for C band), they may be rusty but can be sanded or wire brushed and then painted with Rust Destroyer followed by a coat of paint.

As far as post installation, I know some receivers can direct a dish rotator, but do I need to purchase an external box as well for that, or does it pass the signal through the coax?

I'm not the best person to answer that, all my dishes are fixed on a single satellite except for one which technically can be moved but hasn't been for years.

How does latitude affect signal? I'm assuming that closer to the equator puts less distance, and less atmosphere between your dish and the satellite, but how drastically does that translate to dish and signal size? I'm in the Dallas area, so fairly southern.

I would think how close you are to the equator would not make a big difference but what you are more concerned about is the coverage area of a satellite. For example, where I live in the northern US I can get a great signal from the Canadian satellites, however down in Texas you would be much further from their coverage area so you may need a larger dish to receive those satellites or in some cases simply may not be able to receive them at all.

Your last thought is pretty much how I have got all my dishes. A few notes: I have found steel mesh dishes are the best but check to make sure they are not too rusty or dented, preferably before you even talk to the homeowner (a good pair of binoculars may be helpful), I have one dish that's more auto body filler than steel in the lower part and it doesn't give me great signal strength. If you see one that looks like someones been hitting baseballs into it I'd take that only as a last resort. When you approach the homeowner, just ask if they are still using their dish, if they say no then ask if they would like to get rid of it. I always explain that I want to get one to use for satellite reception and that I am not a scrapper (a lot of people don't care for scrappers). You will get all kinds of reactions. Some people think they are sitting on a piece of gold and will try to charge you big bucks - just politely walk away from those. I have never paid more than $20 for a dish and that was a 10 foot Channel Master in great shape. Some people are happy to get rid of the dish but will try to sell you their old receiver, and you have to explain that all satellite TV is now digital so just as their old TV won't work anymore, neither will an old satellite receiver (it might have some value as a dish mover if it has that circuitry built in, but that's about it). The best ones are where you get a woman who is so sick of looking at that "big ugly dish" that she thinks you are an angel sent from heaven or something, in fact the reason I wound up with the really rusty dish was because the woman begged me to take it, she hated it! If no one is home, leave a note in the door, just say something like "If you are no longer using your big satellite dish in your back yard and would like to get rid of it please call me. I want to use it for satellite reception, I am not a metal scrapper. My number is..." I have left notes like that and got a call after a week or a month, in one case it was nearly six months if I recall correctly. And then there is the occasional crab who resents the fact that you have rung their doorbell, again just politely walk away.

Big fiberglass dishes are better than nothing (maybe) but there are three problems with them. First, the damn things are usually HEAVY, even a smaller one can break your back. If it is still on the pole plan on bringing two weight lifters or three or four guys with normal strength to get it off the pole and onto your truck or trailer. If it is a really big one you may need to rent a crane! Second, they tend to attract black mold (especially if there are oak trees around) which makes them look extra ugly - if you get one be prepared to pressure wash and maybe paint or stain it before you put it up (I have used forest green colored stain and it works really well to make the dish "blend in" more, though obviously you'd want to match the color to the area). Third, for some odd reason the metal parts tend to be much rustier than on equivalent size metal dishes, though I have never understood why.

When you go to get a dish bring penetrating oil, a propane torch, a set of socket wrenches, one or two big crescent wrenches, a breaker bar if you have one, and a screwdriver with tips. Also it you have foolishly said you would take the pole, bring shovels, a sledge hammer, and a really strong friend if you have one (more than one if it's a fiberglass dish). I have never taken the pole because they are always set in concrete and it is easier to just go get another pole at the scrap metal yard, then again if I had an electric or gas powered jackhammer to break up the cement I might feel differently. Also you obviously will need a trailer or truck with a large enough bed. Note that in many states a ten foot dish is technically considered a wide load and if you don't have a permit and whatever else is required for wide loads in your state you could get ticketed, so try to plan a route in advance that keeps you on the back roads and off the major highways. Tie it down well (you don't want it flying off the back of the truck or trailer in the wind) and go slow. And if you are hauling a ten foot dish (or larger) and a line of cars starts to form behind you, find a place to pull over and let them by so you don't get someone so irritated that they get on their phone and call the local police to report you. You might prefer to partially disassemble the dish prior to hauling (especially if you need to travel on major highways) but that can be easier said than done because the bolts may all be very rusty (which is where the penetrating oil and torch can come in handy). If you do disassemble, make sure you label all the sections first to you can reassemble them in the same order.

In our area one of the companies that installed satellite dishes also did tree trimming and therefore had bucket trucks, so they thought nothing of putting dishes on high poles. Be very careful about asking about those because the higher they are, the lower the chance that you will be able to get them down without injuring yourself, damaging property, or bending the dish irreparably (in which case maybe you do become a scrapper). You need to be able to raise the dish off the pole and then lower it to the ground safely. As a ham radio guy you may have some experience in raising tower sections which might be helpful, but remember that a dish might be a lot heavier than a tower section. With the homeowner's permission you can back your truck or trailer up to the pole and maybe gain a little height to stand on, but if you don't have access to any heavy equipment I would try to ask yourself "how much trouble am I going to have getting this thing down?" before approaching the homeowner. Sadly those are sometimes the people who most want to get rid of their "big ugly dish" but you have to think about the chances of personal injury and liability (if you drop a big heavy fiberglass dish on a house or garage and it damages the roof the homeowner is going to expect you to pay, and morally you really should pay for any damage you cause). Also, in rural areas be careful where you drive; avoid driving over septic tanks, drain fields, old wells, etc. or you could cause vehicle or property damage.

That's about all I can think of and anyway I don't want to write a book here! Hope it helps.

Pretty in depth, I'm going to keep an eyeout for C-Band, and have some fun with KU while I scout out for the right dish.

Looking at renting a power auger to bore out a hole. Any guidelines for speccing that out? I googled around and didn't quite find hard and fast rules so I figured I'd post my plan. I'm thinking 8" diameter hole, 26"-30" deep , 100lb quickset concrete, and a fence post similar to below:

811 has already been called, and I'm very clear of any pipes/underground cables (according to them). This will be for a 90cm dish (geosat) with rotator.

Haven't put the pole in yet, but remembered that I had a nonpen mount that I was using for some Ham Radio stuff so I borrowed it. Things seem to be working, though I'm seeing channels on what appear to be the wrong satellite (off like 2 degrees). Does that mean my due south is off a bit? Using USALS.

Ancient has it pretty much covered. I'll jump around here. Others please pipe in. Especially johnnynobody because he's been through the trials and tribulations.

You being 2 degrees of could be a few things. Your dish may be that much off rotated on the motor shaft that was referenced to the 0 position. Are you tracking the arc well? There are cheats where if you're simply off by a few degrees on every sat in the arc you can change your latitude degrees in the USALS receiver menu by that much. Lots of variables. This might help you.

Yeah. A pole in the ground would only be a good ground if it were copper. A proper ground rod and bonding to NEC and local code is the only way really. Depending on your location I'd thing you would want the dish pole a bit deeper. My 12 footer is in at least 6 feet. A 5" piece of well casing. From memory I believe the auger was a 10". Filled with concrete the whole way. But again, I live where the frost line gets 4'. The dish is a 'glass and the polar mount is robust. Up since '84-ish. Still going strong.

If it's just a small dish you're going to move with a USALS motor. I guess the receiver will control it well. I would look at the size, wind load ratings, and weight of them. I have a polar mount with actuator and a DISEqC motor controller. It shoves the solid fiberglass dish around pretty well. But "dish flop" will occur if it's over more than around 58W for C Band. 72 degrees is my longitude.

Polar mounts. Wow there are sure some crappy chinesium ones being sold these days. I see dishes not used around here I could probably walk off with just so people could get them out of their yards. A trip to the sand blaster, some epoxy paint. A few pillow block bearings to replace the bushing setup. An actuator. And have something far better than all-thread and angle iron I see out there lately. What junk!

We can cover the rest as we go.

I plan on doing most of the installation myself, and had a couple questions. Does the mounting pole double as a ground, or do I need to drive a second ground line? How deep does the mounting pole need to be in the ground? I've got limestone a few feet down, though depth varies a bit across the lot.

The pole is not an adequate ground. I drove an 5/8"x8' rod into the earth adjacent to the pole and used #2 wire to connect the pole to the ground rod. A thermal bond is best but you can use a mechanical bond.

Nowadays, the pipe neeeds to be 4.5" OD schedule 40 pipe for 10 footers and larger. The "rule" is the pipe length needs to be at least the radius of the dish (1/2 of the diameter) above the ground but I went to 7' with my 12' KTI. That would account for 2/3 of the overall length of the pipe so that means the pipe should be 4 feet below ground (unless you do it in my alternate way as indicated below). A 10' pipe should be adequate. I didn't put my pipe into the ground but I had triangular base welded onto a 7' pipe and had three 5/8" holes drilled into the plate where I used custom made L bolts that were 4 feet long that went into the dug hole. This way it makes it easier to re-level the pipe should it shift. It has worked very well for me for 15 years but I've never had to re-level the pole. If you put your pipe into the ground I suggest welding on a piece of rebar at the bottom to keep the pipe and dish from twisting out of alignment due to wind. That's how L-bolts help with my setup. I had fiber infused concrete delivered for my concrete base. I don't remember how much concrete I used.

As far as post installation, I know some receivers can direct a dish rotator, but do I need to purchase an external box as well for that, or does it pass the signal through the coax?

If you're using an actuator controlled dish, you'll need a motor controller such as a Gbox or Vbox or whatever is available. If you're using a HH motor for a small Ku band dish, your receiver will be able to control it.

How does latitude affect signal? I'm assuming that closer to the equator puts less distance, and less atmosphere between your dish and the satellite, but how drastically does that translate to dish and signal size? I'm in the Dallas area, so fairly southern.

Latitude determines declination and elevation settings. Declination should stay the same over the entire arc but elevation will change with azimuth. Dish size is determined by many factors but the larger the dish the better. Satellite footprint and signal modulation are the 2 biggest factors. For most of us, a 10 foot dish is minimum for C-band with 12 foot recommended. For Ku band a 1.2 meter (approx 4 feet) is good.

TEK2000.com sells both consumer grade and commercial grade dishes but 10 footers and 12 footers are in short supply due to the CV-19 issue. They have a consumer grade 4 meter dish in stock but it's $3000 not including shipping. Finding used 10 or 12 foot antenna in good condition are hard to come by, also. I'm still in the process of installing a consumer grade TEK 12 footer but assembly does not go well. I'm going to plan D now so hopefully I'll have it up and running by next weekend. By the way, my 12 footer cost about $2300 with shipping. The KTI 12 footer was about $1000 15 years ago and it was much easier to assemble.

Due to security concerns and the fact that the Tapatalk Plugin for Xenforo is no longer being updated we have removed Tapatalk support from SatelliteGuys.

For those who were using it we recommend using our PWA App instead which is faster and does not have all the spam Tapatalk had. Below is a graphic showing how to add SatelliteGuys to your devices home screen. (While iOS is shown the process is mostly the same for Android.)

Actually, PWA stands for "Progressive Web Application" and is basically just saving a site's homepage to your desktop where it appears as an "App" with the rest of your smartphone's Apps.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

New low power station has been granted by the FCC and the new call leter is K33OB-D on RF ch. 33.

Will run at 15 KW ERP, this one runs from the Westside same location as KWPL-LD a HC2 owned station.

It's going to be aimed at eastern part of Albuquerque, so it's tightly focused beam pattern.

This new station is owned by Digital Network and what kind of programmings is unkown at this time.😎

I have had good experiences with Brave but lately I am frustrated with it.

Now when I launch the app it shows a box at the bottom asking if I want to go back to the last opened page. It is in conveniently located and I would prefer to eliminate it.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Please let's not sidetrack the discussion into an exploration of why I don't care for it or a lecture about all the wonderful aspects of the feature. I just do not care for it.

I don't have an Android phone so I don't know if this will apply to the Brave settings on your android device but it works on the desktop for me.

Change this setting to either startup to a different website or a new tab page. I have mine set to open to google.com instead of where I left off and it doesn't ask me at the next startup if I want to open the last opened page unless it crashed.

Hello everyone.

I am new here and I done a search on MLB Extra Innings and DISH and it led me to this forum and so I signed up and hopefully someone can help me out with some issues.

First off, I am a DISH Outdoors customer and I signed up for service back in late October of 2025. I have a Wally HD Receiver and I am using the DISH Playmaker OS 2.1 as my Antenna that operates on 110 and 119 Western Arc and Alternative 61.5, 110, and 119 satellites. I signed up for MLB Extra Innings back in March before the season began. I was excited to be able to watch MLB Extra Innings because I love baseball and I use to have MLB Extra Innings on Satellite DIRECTV back in 2001-2004 and on Satellite DISH back in 2016 and 2017.

I was a bit disappointed when I found out that it is actually MLB.TV Simulcasted to DISH Satellite (More on that later) Anyways I have been watching faithfully almost every night however about a week ago there was a problem. When I went to go to the game to watch a game the game wouldn't come in an I would send a refresh signal to my receiver and then I could watch the programming and when I went to switch games at that games appointed time slot my Wally HD Receiver who lockup where I couldn't change any channels or view the guide and it would reboot. The next night when I turned to a game at game start it still had the background it shows before the game started and again send a refresh signal and went though this same thing over and over. I added a movie channel to my lineup and had issues with showing up my Dish Wally HD Receiver.

With an investigation after several calls with DISH Support it was determined that by going to the diagnostics screen that I had a issue with my Tuner because any changes that I made to my programming these changes would not take affect on the Wally HD Receiver. In other words that Wally HD Receiver was toast!

I too had reported MLB Extra Innings issue to DISH and they created a ticket for it and said that someone would investigate the issue. I too took notice that under MyDISH account under MLB Extra Innings always before it would show that I was subscribed and on auto-renew. Now it shows nothing and even after logging out and deleting my User Name and Password so that I can see it in guest mode it too doesn't even list a price and option for purchase as does the now WNBA League Pass.

After my DISH Receiver was ruined I had to buy a new Wally HD Receiver. I took advantage an bought 2 HD Wally's and added them both to my account. I called back to remove the old box off of the account and was told it was linked to MLB Extra Innings and the advanced technical support team said there was a glitch with MLB Extra Innings and hope to have a resolution in a couple of days and I could call back in to then to remove the box. But both the 2 new Wally HD Receivers are activated on my account. I asked them what the problem was with MLB Extra Innings and how long it would be and I was told there was a glitch as I asked to specify what they meant and got no answer. I again went and checked the MyDISH account page under the MLB Extra Innings page and it still doesn't list me as subscribed and after logging out and deleting my User Name and Password so I could it see it as a guest mode and it still doesn't list the price and option for purchase as it does for the WNBA League Pass.

I am afraid to boot up these boxes and go through the activation screen process because of the issues with the MLB Extra Innings in fear it will do the same or mess up my boxes from being able to receive MLB Extra Inning because or any other programing because I was told that MLB Extra Innings wouldn't come in on those new box because it was activated with the Wally that is ruined and it needs removed first.

Now I have no DISH service going on a week and miss my MLB Extra Innings when the races are just heating up and now with two boxes activated I can't boot up because I am afraid it will mess them up and I will be out the $180.00 or so dollars I made in purchase on the receivers.

Is anyone else experiencing issues with their MLB Extra Innings and does anyone really know what this so called glitch actually is? I can't seem to get a clear answer from anybody and don't even know if it will even be fixed or anyone really understands it.

Now to my previous statement on how I was disappointed that MLB Extra Innings is actually MLB.TV in simulcast. When I had MLB Extra Innings before with DIRECTV in 2001-2004 and with DISH form 2016 and 2017. They would always show the commercials for every teams broadcast from their local market and all games would be authentic just as if you were watching in their home market. After I quit DISH I went to streaming for awhile and I done MLB.TV and I hated their features because of the no commercials, the delayed times of getting back after the commercial break, and not being able to listen to what studios had to say when they would cut into the studios, and always looking at the screen during commercial breaks with a screen that says commercial break in progress and a silhouette background of MLB Players doing baseball things and the their crazy commercial breaks sound. I was excited to go back to DISH thinking I escaped the horrors of MLB.TV. Well its actually the same thing. I compared them side by side and actually MLB.TV is ahead by just a few seconds. So actually MLB Extra Innings on Satellite is delayed from time period wise from actually watching MLB.TV which shows it is simulcasted. My question is when did this start? And is this legal? This isn't what I know MLB Extra Innings to be. I too had signed up for NHL Center Ice this past winter and thank goodness its authentic! They still have the commercials and its like watching it as you were in their home network and its the way it oughta be even if you only do get one feed of NHL Center Ice per team on DISH and don't know which feed it is every night.

Looking forward to your responses. So far happy with DISH but unhappy with this last week and the ruining of a Wally HD Receiver.

I hope I can be of some contribution here as well.

Sincerely,

I know they are doing some major satellite work - the second satellite at 110 which is now in use, and they are moving channels between 119 and 110. Maybe since there are no other sports going on, have they temporarily cut back on the out of market sports packages? I am not sure. It looks like those channels are all coming from 119 TP 13, 110 TP 12, and 110 TP 09.

Also, Dish's Scheduled Satellite Maintenance page doesn't have anything going on:

Trying to get use to this forum and where everything is located at. I saw you responded from my post on the changes and took me a while to get back to see this post. But yes, it is exactly what I was thinking. I too noticed the change of MLB Extra Innings from 110 to 119. Because of 30 teams they have to algin everything. Only other sport going on PPV wise is WNBA League Pass and I do not have a subscription to that but maybe some else who has it can confirm what they done and what satellite and transponders they are on.

This is a big shift for DISH. I just hope if Charlie Ergen does ever sell out to anyone that I can continue to use my DISH Playmaker and I can keep my Wally's. If its anything like what happened to DIRECTV a few years back which turned out to be a total disaster when AT&T acquired DIRECTV nothing there changed with boxes or anything and you continued to use the same service but I was very surprised to see AT&T sell it to TPG especially after they had just bought it now long ago.

Update on MLB Extra Innings as of 5:50 P.M. CDT June 10, 2026...

I am getting tired of not being able to watch any baseball games and having paid for MLB Extra Innings and not knowing what the reason is I called dish back at 1-800-333-3474. I guess after all of my calls my call was routed to the Advanced Technical Support Team. I had something happen that I never knew they could do and they gained access into my Wally Receiver. I was told settings look good and right now on the only channel that shows is the MLB1 Baltimore Orioles Channel. They are playing the at home against the Seattle Mariners right now. She was able to access to that channel which prompted a purchase a Rent option. That signaled a red flag to her right away. She escalated a ticket with photographs and info from my screen to the top tier advanced programing technical department and told me they received the ticket and are reviewing it now. They got back to her and said they would have information within 30 minutes. I either get the channels within 30 minutes or I am to call back and they will advance from there. Seems like maybe my persistence is paying off. I will keep you informed. Maybe we can all have a resolution to this shortly.

Final Update... As of 8:08 P.M. CDT June 10, 2026.

I now have MLB Extra Innings back! Look at the photo! (I did not include full image of the game due to copyright)

Let me just say it was rough! Very rough! And lets just say Charlie Ergen should be ashamed of his customer service team and how they handled this whole issue.

After multiple calls after my last post only to get the run around with answers like there are no refunds on MLB Extra Innings once the season starts, to they are working on it, to accessing my screen and sending multi hits to the box.

All I asked was one simple question remove the MLB Extra Innings which they confirmed I had and reauthorize free of charge. I was given a 1,000 reasons why this couldn't be done.

Well..........

I paid for it myself.... $120.00 current rate and it works!

I called back in to let them know what I done and what I thought of the customer service and told them I needed refunded. I was told they didn't do refunds....

Well again I called back and got someone who refunded the original payment of $150.00 back to my account. A $30 discount for all the hard trouble I went though.

It is now up to you all out there that have MLB Extra Innings to try to get them to do this but I am afraid you are going to have to take your own action and purchase again and beg for a refund or be out the $150.00 originally paid.

Persistence pays off. I don't give up very easily.

You can all go here below to make the purchase if you have any trouble.

I hope it all works well for you! And best of luck to everyone who has it!

I will still be around on this forum. You all sound like a fine group of people! I hope I can contribute more.

Take care!
