Nothing else to do. So, starting this threat to exchange ideas. Just like anybody else's my electronics get warm, too. I touch the top, feels little warm as expected. Enough space around them for hot air to escape. Those small usb fans r reasonably priced at Amazon around $10. Most come with 3 settings. What do you think? Good idea? Not necessary?

My leased Joey 2s feel warm even when they are off. Not too warm, but I can feel it when I touch the top. I am hoping that's normal.

The key for Dish DVR's if airflow UNDER the DVR. I use very inexpensive plastic coasters for chair legs by gluing one on top of the other and then placing them under each of the four feet. This should be done no matter where the DVR is placed because in my experience it can make a great difference.

As for the Joeys: they get HOT, but they have lots of fairly big ventilation slits AND they don't seem to exhibit any unreliable behavior that can be attributed to the heat produced by the Joey. Any unreliability at a Joey has always been software or some internal defect in my experience. So, I don't see a case for attempting to do anything to cool a Joey. Joey's get really hot, but that is what they do and should still work well. Just leave plenty of room for heat to escape the Joey and outside air for flow around it. I would not put a Joey in a cabinet, but put it OUTSIDE the cabinet, even if out of sight behind or beside the cabinet on the floor even so that heat can escape the Joey. Joey's are not as delicate as the DVR with its precious (and heat producing) HDD that should be protected from even vibrations. I would not bother with a laptop for a Joey since you can put that thing almost anywhere where the heat can escape.

As for enclosed spaces such as cabinets or the like, Dish or TiVo Roamio DVR's placed in an enclosed space will NEED extra cooling, otherwise the H3 will exhibit unreliable behavior and the speed of the fan will greatly increase making a lot of noise desperately trying to cool itself. I lived through that. If the fan is in high speed, then it is TOO HOT and will NEVER get the DVR cool enough for reliable service. Putting a full-size, but inexpensive laptop under the H3 solves all heat related problems, and is an easy, cheap, but highly effective solution for any DVR.

As for the TiVo Roamios: the Roamios are notorious for its poor air flow and under-powered fan, and this can cause the fan to increase speed and produce noise and possibly exceed the temperature of its operating range. All manner of costly and time-consuming and trouble-some (for me, disconnecting, removing, and replacing and reconnecting the DVR in the stack is the MOST difficult of the entire notion of cracking open the DVR just for a cooling solution) DYI's for fan replacement are discussed and done by those with plenty of time on their hands, but nothing is more simple and, yet, still highly effective as just slipping a full size laptop fan to do the same job. All done in a matter of SECONDS and no additional cost, back breaking removals from stacks and hard to reach electrical outlets (USP's) nor mess of a work bench, and never missing a recording either.

Yes, connecting the fans to the USB's of each DVR USB port has worked fine for MANY YEARS, and is often the ONLY place left to get power for the fans. I believe both the H3 and Roamio USB's were designed to power low load devices, so their presence connected to USB for power has never been an issue for either DVR over the MANY YEARS.

A laptop fan is an easy, rational, elegant solution for DVR's that are in need of additional cooling, so long as the DVR is capable of powering the fan, and most LATER model DVR's are designed to providing modest power for "future" devices by the DVR company. The laptop fan need not fancy or expensive. It should be of approximate size so that the all or the at least the great majority of the DVR can rest upon it providing airflow over most of the botton of the DVR.

While some prefer the longer, more expensive, and troublesome DYI internal fan replacement of a TiVo Roamio, a fair number of TiVo Roamio owners have opted for the laptop fan solution and are pleased with it, including yours truly. Now, a DYI to exchange an HDD for a new one or a bigger one is worth the trouble, but not for merely providing additional cooling when a laptop fan can be slipped under the DVR in seconds.

As for the concern of dust, that is a fair concern, but hardly what it was decades ago. A great many modern devices and over time we have learned that while dust can contribute to heat being retained among other problems, it nonetheless proposes only a minimum of concern, while HEAT and the lack of airflow or the lack of fan cooling the device is the REAL and even IMMEDIATE killer, not the dust. I know of and even have devices that over the many, many years probably have a great deal of dust, even with the fan sucking out the heat and some of that dust, but continue to work just as well as day one some 10 years ago. In fact, attempting any dust removal from such dusty devices as an AVR--with their massive ventilation slits that allow huge amounts of dust and other fairly big things--can create more problems than it is supposed to solve, and even KILL the device. While there is a right and proper way to do it very delicately, I don't know anyone (people who do know and repair or design the things) who recommends any attempt at dust removial, unless it is an attempt to SAVE a malfunctioning or even dead device (like an AVR) with nothing to lose as a last attempt. The thinking on dust has evolved over the decades, and equipment has improved in that regard, as well. Techs today are just not all that troubled by it as they once were.

So, laptop fans are a great solution for whatever devices may require more cooling, and certainly NOT absurd. It may be absurd to NOT consider a laptop fan as an option :).

Thank u DishsubLA; Enlighten me pls. Why would u put another gadget (old laptop) under DVR that generates more heat? I understand a small usb fan blows the hot air away and at least gives u confidence. Well, even if that is not necessary it won't harm anything. $10-15 investment won't break u.

the air you are blowing onto the receiver is only mildly cooler than the air generally floating around the receiver.
maybe, the purpose is getting rid of the hot air around the equipment.
some believe a fan is a good idea, some don't. one thing is sure is you can't harm anything as far as I am concerned.

My Hopper 3s don't feel warm to the touch. My 4KJs feel real warm. So I just use one of those plastic chair leg cups under the Joeys to raise them up some. When I had 722s and HWSs I used a cooling fan setup like this plugged into AC power. I wish the Hopper 3 had a way to check the temp like the 722 and HWS have!

Are you sure the HWS still have that? I thought that feature was eliminated with the switch to the Carbon UI, which is also why the Hopper 3 does not have it.

Sure. Back when the Hoppers reported the internal temp--a feature that has since been removed by Dish some years ago--the temp was quite HOT/HIGH with the fan roaring in high speed in attempt to cool it down. After placing the laptop fan under the Hopper, the fan slowed and became quiet and the internal temp was reported a SIGNIFICANTLY LESS than before. It was some years ago, so I can't recall the exact difference in temp, but it was a big difference, and even the Hopper felt very warm but not so HOT to the touch. Also the Hopper became reliable in operation. The laptop solution is, in my experience, only really needed if the Hopper is in an enclosed space and if the fan is running high and loud and if the Hopper is unreliable in operation.

The laptop fan success is also well-reported among TiVo Roamio owners, as well. These are solutions for people who encounter problems. Thankfully TiVo still reports internal temp, and I've observed significant difference in TiVo Roamio temps when using a laptop. The Roamios are notorious for their poor air flow cooling design and under-powered fan such that many DYI'ers have replaced the fan or placed laptops underneath with better results and a properly functioning Roamio.

Keep in mind that in most situations what appears to be a modest change/solution to excessive heat--such as my recommendation to just allow a few inches between the bottom of a Hopper and the surface beneath it can allow sufficient air flow to make a big difference in cooling temps--back when they were displayed by the Hopper. Going back to the first gen DishPro DVR's (almost 20 years?), I have always placed every Dish DVR on top of coasters that allow a few inches of space under the DVR that result--observed back when Dish reported internal temps--in fair difference in cooler temps, and more reliable DVR operation. YMMV. I've even had Dish tech's who've observed this mention that it was the a good thing to do or the right thing to do. I do NOT find laptop fans necessary on NON-DVR units or clients because while these units can feel quite hot to the touch, they don't seem to suffer from unreliable operations and some have much larger slits that allow great amounts of heat to escape that the DVR units do not.

One does not require a huge full room fan blasting at the troublesome DVR to have an effect. Often all it takes is an added modest, but constant flow of air that makes all the difference in the world. After all, we know that these laptop fans with their modest addition of air flow when placed under really HOT laptops also make a tremendous difference. This is why people use laptop fans in the first place. If one accepts the usefulness of laptop fans cooling really hot laptops, then it would be illogical to conclude that laptop fans could not possibly help an overheated DVR--without out at least trying it out to see for themselves. On the other hand, if one believes that laptop fans do nothing for laptops, then there is no point in discussing it with such a person in the first place.

I hope, as per your request, you feel "enlightened". If not, then everyone is entitled to their doubts. But laptop fans work for me. I was just sharing personal experience with success.

Yes, and further, I would say that if someone is having problems, it is certainly worth a try, but I can tell you a fair number of people who have attempted the laptop fan solution on this and the TiVo CF have reported success. But one would have to try it out for themselves and come to their own conclusion.

My dad has too much free time (retired) and he's a gadget junkie. He installed some fans and built a circuit with a thermometer that turns the fans on and off based on the temperature in the cabinet.

He did it from scratch with diodes, resistors, and gobgloobers like that. There's probably something out there on an Arduino that you could fool with.

So if you don't need to, but got nothing to do and time to do it... hey go for it!

Still with Choice package? My stepdad says when the game started he got black screen and something to do with not the right package.
He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.

That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Take a look at this weeks teams and tell me how you determine the Top 10, let alone the Top 24.

Were going to have maybe 1 undefeated team Miami ... they played No One so far, if they get by Notre Dame they will have at least played 1 good team.

There are a bunch of ok to good teams, none that are head and shoulders above the rest, like usual, Bama, Georgia, Ohio State some years, ND some years ... none are good ...

Buckeyes would be there, but lost thier QB, they may still be good, we'll have to wait a few games and see how the Freshman Qb takes over.

UCLA is up there in the Good category this year ... whens the last time we said that.

BYU thought they were the Top team (#2) when they beat ND, but turned around and lost the next week.

People complained when they had Blow outs in the small Playoffs the last few years, what are they going to say when we have 8 or 12 Playoff games that suck ?

The playoff told us rankings are pointless. Lesser ranked teams were winning playoff games. Ranking the top 24? Rank it the same way as normal. It'll consist of at least four or five of each cartel's teams, other conference winners. The field will be fine, the sorting will be problematic and arbitrary, but in the end does it matter?

It'll matter when OSU or Alabama have to face a decent upstart squad due to being ranked midway in the listing, or goodness help us, each other. But thanks to arbitrary rankings, that should be easily avoided by design. Then the cartels will need to fix the rankings a bit so the top dogs can have a bye or three to help prevent those untimely eliminations from the playoff.

For better or worse, NIL and the transfer portal have evened the field. NCAA will be pretty much like the NFL with records being kind of meaningless and anyone can make a run and win it all.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Well, I didn't immediately think of broadcast, where there are all kinds of digital "subchannels"- I remember back when digital broadcast began that supposedly the 6mhz channel would likely support just 1 HD program and that the added subchannels would likely have to remain SD. I don't watch enough broadcast to know. Are there a lot of the subchannels in SD-only, and how do they do that, like are they in 4:3 or some kind of low-res widescreen?

New more efficient encoders. I think there's around 60 channels/sub channels now in the Tulsa dma. 480 widescreen for most of the sub channels, but some have 2 HD channels and a couple of SD sub channels while others have 1 HD and 5 or more SD sub channels. If they moved to mp4 or hevc encoding they could do higher bitrates for SD or more HD or even 4K in that 6Mhz channel. That could render some early digital tvs unable to tune though as they may not have the codecs for that. Considering 4K tvs have been on sale for years, I think it would be a very small minority of TVs with the problem. I'd rather see that happen and keep ATSC 1 than continue the move to a DRM enforced ATSC 3 world.
