Today the temperature is 48 F. My C-band LNBF hasn't performed as well as it this since last autumn.

Perhaps the improvement is due at least partially to the LNBF being colder which therefore might lower the thermal noise in its electronics. If this were true, would it be possible to have a refrigerated LNBF? You could literally plug the LNBF into AC power like a fridge or a freezer.

That CBS mux on 89W is 9/10 FEC, S2 8psk. Likely won't work on the 1.2m antenna... Maybe a 1.8m if very well tuned.

For sure, my receiver won't lock using a 1.2m. But I wondered if it might still cause adjacent satellite interference being almost on the same frequency/polarity. Although I can't lock a tp doesn't mean I'm not receiving some signal from it.

I'm deviating from topic. More likely than above issue is I need to reinstall my LNBF/scalar following some rules. I will start by installing scalar at 0.6 f/D. Then I will try to get the LNBF positioned as lose to the dish focus of 72 cm. This is from spec sheet for Fortec Star 1.2m. This could be a challenge since the LNBF holder may not allow both of above points. Then I will try optimizing signals across multiple frequencies, polarities, transponders. I think this procedure may improve results overall. I know if I can't get BYU on 91W then something is wrong.

Dish focal length 72 cm likely is the focal length for the mother (primefocus) parabola. Would be about the distance bottom of dish to focal point (depending on still unknown position of parabola vertex).
Needed f/D setting can be calculated from LNB viewing angle (f/D-value from an offset dish has a rather indirect relation to f/D setting of a feedhorn!).

Why not measure some more dish measures, and thus be able to calculate more precise parabolic specs?

Needed are exact height and width measure of the parabolic working area of the dish (assuming the dish has a flat face, and passes the string test).

And depth measure, very precise: easiest at the center
(but taken at another height of the dish is also possible, but the measureing height must then also be given (as height along dishface, measured from the bottom; or (better, I think) as straight-line-distance from bottom to measuring point of the dish surface) ).
Please do mention which of these measures you've taken.

Thanks for the response. I know this is your field!

I was just out in the rain adjusting as I said I would. I didn't think those would work from previous hands-on testing. I was correct. Even in the rain, I can see results are terrible. You explained why.

The 72 cm is approximately the LNBF arm distance from dish edge to LNBF. The 0.6 cannot be set since the scalar falls off the mouth of the feedhorn before 0.6 can be reached.

Specifications for the dish face are 132 cm x 120 cm. I will confirm by measuring once rain stops. Offset angle of the dish according to specs is 24.62 degrees. The face is not new having survived a couple of falls but it has better performance on Ku when compared against a couple of commercial 1m dishes. I've done string tests in past and used "pass the basketball" and "shaken like a baby" procedures to correct dish shape as well as possible.

I will get the depth measurement at centre as soon as the rain allows.

Added: Measured depth is 11.3 cm. Measured height is 132.5 cm. Measured width is 120.5 cm.
A
a33
Offset angle of the dish according to specs is 24.62 degrees.

That would fit exactly to height 132.0 and width 120.0 cm! Is the x.0-precision right, indeed?

Depth please measured to half a mm precise, if possible.

Depth of 11.29 cm would give focal length = 72.0; topstring = 127.1 and bottomstring = 72.1.
f/D of the dish would be 0.600, indeed, but f/D-equivalent for the feedhorn would be (ouch!) 0.71 (equivalent to 77.6 degrees).

Based on my measurements, can you calculate the focus position of LNBF from centre of dish? If so, would that be "1/4 inch inside feed horn" as is often stated? It would be fun to compare the calculation vs where I physically have it located now. Same for the conical scalar. The LNBF must be close to where it should be since last night in the clear cold, I received some of the strongest tps ever since I started playing with the mini-BUD.

Yes, of course.

I measured more like 132.5 x 120.5 cm
That is without the rim, so only the parabolic surface?
And I need depth at the center (easiest), also without the height of the dish rim (!) .

All parabolic specs are then calculated: focal distance, focal position, G-spot (aiming point for the LNB, at half the illuminated angle), clearance from vertex, illumination angle (f/D-equivalent), etc etc.

If so, would that be "1/4 inch inside feed horn" as is often stated?
I usually take 1 cm inside, for Ku. But I believe its different for Ku and C, and for various forms of feedhorns?

I have another calculator, that calculates the distances 3.5 cm behind the focal point (along the line focus to G-spot), where the center of an LNBholder for a Ku LNBf should be about.

11.3 cm

So, it looks like the specs (offset angle, and focal length) that you already had, are not bad at all!

Here are the calculation results, and a picture with the indicated points:

Interesting, for sure. I will file this information in my master file for my Fortec Star dish.

Just for fun, once the rain/wind storm ends, I will go out and try to measure dimensions as accurately as possible and compare against this data. For example, I can check top string and bottom string lengths. If I physically install the top and bottom strings, I can approximately measure the bisector line distance from the focus to the G-spot to see how close it is to 84.16 cm. These measurements are made difficult with the scalar in place. So there will be some guessing. I don't want to remove the scalar now since it is tuned well.

Your data shows f/D of mother prime focus dish as 0.29. I can compare this to where my scalar is installed since the scale is calibrated for a prime focus dish.

Don't know what you mean by this?
The f/D=0.29 would be the feedhorn setting for the dish with diameter 253 cm.
For your dish, with viewing angle 77 degrees, the f/D-equivalent (so f/D-setting) would be 0.71.

By the way. Aiming a bit above the G-spot, but below the deepest point, should also be OK, I think. Compromise between signal density, and least spill-over. But I never tested that.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff

  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

This will be a SAD DAY when this passes ....

They complained the last year that we had a bunch of Blow Outs in the Playoffs ... heres an idea, lets Double the amount of teams and hope for Closer games ... ya right.

This never should have went past 8 teams, 10 at the most.

Now, I have heard that play in games are being talked about, such as #13 plays #24 and so forth, to cut the field down (why cut it down, just don't expand it.)
I'm not sure exactly how thats going to work out or if it was just someone talking.

They were also talking about starting the Season earlier ...

I really don't like the National Championship game being the end of January ... if the Semi Finals are over New Years, thats fine with the Championship game the next week.
