Advice needed. I am currently unhappy Directv customer. I have a main house and a cottage in my back yard which I Airbnb (cottage is approximately 40 feet from main house). I have a Genie 2 in the main house and a Wireless Genie Mini in the cottage. I'm curious what my options would be to get TV coverage over in the cottage if I cancel directv account. The wireless aspect of the Genie has worked great. Does Dish offer anything comparable to the wireless access? Cable companies? Without having to come in and do a major wiring job?

Why do you feel you need to provide TV service for airbnb visitors? Is that something that's commonly expected?

I cant think of a rental property Ive ever rented that did not offer tv service of some sort.

Paid for TV service?

When I was in college and rented apartments, none of them ever included TV service. Sure, they were wired for cable or something, but it was up to me and my roommates to pay for it if we wanted it.

What about a hotel room?

What about a hotel room?

Yes that normally does include TV but as more and more people cut the cord I expect to see that change (if it hasn't already, it has been a couple years since I've been in a hotel room)

They will provide a TV, and maybe it'll be "smart" and/or provide some way to share your phone's display with it, but not have cable/satellite. They'll invest that money they used to spend on cable TV on good wifi and internet, and assume people will bring their streaming subscriptions.

It's pretty east to throw a wifi signal further than that. No details right now. But it's easy.
An Ethernet cable in underground conduit for 40 feet would be a trencher rental and some "stuff". And a router for the distribution and good wifi.
A smart tv or a Fire TV with an Amazon prime account would get you multiple device capability with Prime on the TV. Roku sucks. So do Apple products. For this application.
Lots of free streaming services. Pluto TV. Others.
Yes. It's a perk for your clients. Looks good on ads.
As far as streaming as opposed to satellite HBO Cinemax, Sho...and others. Is it in your budget?
And hopefully going this route you have adequate Broadband speed packages there.

Hotels I've been in, in the last several years all have TVs that are mounted to the wall with no way to get any connections to the back of the TV to use a Roku or Firestick, so if its Not a Smart Tv, your out of luck.
Also, I have had very little luck using the Hotel/Motel Internet in Any of my rooms.

Juan. Good luck popping the hood and changing the points and condenser. It's the 21st century.

A little scenario. A local couple opens their home to hunters. A bnb so to speak.
They have HughesNet. In 30 minutes of the guests chilling out and using their Internet, the bandwidth was eaten up. "Brick Wall" Internet speed. Until the next bill was paid. It stumped them until it was brought to light what happened. Aka: More Money.
I talked them into Starlink. There is no cable out in the boonies. And they don't have nor want DN or Direc.

As a side note the local cable/isp has gone away with cable boxes and dvr's in place of Roku and Fire devices.
Use your own. rent theirs. All cable and on demand is now with those.

Of course hotel/motel internet experience is bad. They limit bandwidth on the "nodes" so 2 or 3 or 4 people don't eat the entire available bandwidth watching their own Netflix on laptops and such in their rooms. Or download music and movies and the hotel gets a nastygram from the ISP and the DCMA.

So the couple has smart TV's in each room. They provide a few streaming services for the hunters.
The wifi router configuration is set to make available adequate bandwidth to provide the TV's good streaming capability. Lets say 5 megabits each.
The renters get 2 megabits. The "pool" of IP addresses is small. Maybe like 10. So setting up the router for guest usage was pretty straight forward.

So. The hunters get TV in their rooms. An instruction sheet and help for them to use the TV's.
Pluto TV being one because it's free and has a program guide.
It's the 21 century mind you.
They get enough wifi bandwidth to surf facebook, check emails, a little youtubing.
But filters to stop or limit music downloads and make it hard to watch their own streaming services on laptops.
And so far it has worked out well.
I would say they haven't lost any hunters (or stargazers, as this is also a Dark Skies area).

Total tech level? 3 of 10 I'd say.

Hotels aren't at the forefront of technology, but if they drop cable/satellite they could fix their wifi so it works well in every room for a fraction of what they save by dropping cable/satellite. Just look how long it took them to have in room wifi at all, how long it took them to switch to flat panel TVs, etc. It will happen, but they are probably only starting to realize they need to improve their wifi and cable/satellite are becoming less and less important to guests.

As for the TVs mounted to the wall, they don't have an input on the side? They would have to rethink that if they adopt a "bring your own TV service" philosophy. A smart TV is a shortcut to that mounting issue for now, but they get out of date within a couple years and the app updates stop, so that's a bad long term strategy.

Really? I stayed in a Motel 6 with Spectrum gig internet (if you used the in room RJ45 jack) and they had DirecTV via a H25 in each room.

I still did some bring my own TV by plugging my laptop's HDMI to the TV's HDMI and using my directv account online to get channels the hotel was not subscribed to.
EarDemon
Hotel Wifi (or any public wifi) = unprotected sex with a street whore.

I didn't get my first laptop until 2010, but ever since then I've had USB cellular modems and mobile hotspots. Given how hotels are usually clustered around interstate off ramps, and cell reception is for the most part pretty good on and around interstates. I've never had a problem whether it be Sprint 3G and 4G WiMax in 2011 at the Holiday Inn in Front Royal, VA or T-Mobile 5G at a Hampton Inn on the West Virginia/Kentucky border a couple of months ago. I'll bring my own internet access thank you very much. I'd be willing to trade a lifetime refusal of hotel wifi and continental breakfasts for as little as a $5/night savings. Both are completely useless to me. Don't really need the TV either, my last trip I didn't turn the TV on once. Give me a clean, stain free bed and a shower and that's all I need.

Obviously they've upgraded fairly recently. They might have had CRTs, SD channels and wifi that worked only in the rooms next to the office if you went a few years ago :)

Haha. "City Slickers" or "Flatlanders" as they are called here. OTA antenna? Haha. Maybe....maybe PBS on a good night. We live way out in the sticks so an ota antenna and the fact that pixelation (versus plain old snow with ntcs) makes receiving stations 90 bird-miles away over hills and valleys quite difficult. As I mentioned. On a good night.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

This will be a SAD DAY when this passes ....

They complained the last year that we had a bunch of Blow Outs in the Playoffs ... heres an idea, lets Double the amount of teams and hope for Closer games ... ya right.

This never should have went past 8 teams, 10 at the most.

Now, I have heard that play in games are being talked about, such as #13 plays #24 and so forth, to cut the field down (why cut it down, just don't expand it.)
I'm not sure exactly how thats going to work out or if it was just someone talking.

They were also talking about starting the Season earlier ...

I really don't like the National Championship game being the end of January ... if the Semi Finals are over New Years, thats fine with the Championship game the next week.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.
EarDemon
I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.
HipKat
it's just not the right solution for me.
As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.
EarDemon
I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.
As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.
