I posted a thread earlier in June about receiving a Moteck SG2100 with a 50mm neck rather than a 42mm neck. The short version of that story is that the original eBay seller is refusing to communicate, an internet storefront for a satellite shop doesn't communicate with prospective customers of a 42mm neck, and Moteck doesn't respond to customer inquiries.

In the spirit of not getting mad but getting even, I set about to design a workaround for integrating a 50mm neck with a 42mm collar. Please note that I'm an engineer in Canada and most references will likely be in SI units. For those wanting to do casual arithmetic at home, it's 25.4mm per inch. Haha.

Initial Bill of Materials:
- 1 Moteck SG2100 antenna motor with 50mm neck
- 1 Azure Shine 85cm DTH Ku reflector with J pole mount and 2 support struts (https://www.azureshine.com.tw/upfiles/editor/files/85cm.pdf)
- 2 double antenna mast clamps (V jaw block, 140mm / 5.5" threaded rod) (Amazon part B096X145NN)
- 1 spare 42mm J pole
- 1 wood pallet
- assorted lag screws, power tools, hand tools, bubble level, wood for cribbing

Basic Method of Procedure for Initial Fitment:
- find a mostly-level spot for the pallet, as this work will be easier and safer to piece together at grade than on a roof
- build up the reflector, per manufacturer's instructions
- fasten the J pole and struts to the pallet in a manner such that the installation is as plumb and as level as practically possible
- zero the azimuth of the SG2100
- install the SG2100 on the J pole, per manufacturer's instructions
- do not set the elevation of the motor yet
- install the upper and lower jaw blocks (4 blocks total; 2 per position) on the 50mm neck
- adjust center of jaw blocks to be at the zero azimuth on the neck
- hand-tighten the clamps so there is a tiny amount of play on the 50mm neck
- install the 42mm J pole into the antenna mounting collar and fasten into place
- install the 3rd jaw block onto the mounting rod at the top and bottom positions
- with the motor elevation bolts and dish elevation bolts loosened and the reflector notionally close to a vertical orientation, bring the 42mm pole back into the 3rd jaw blocks
- use wood cribbing if required under the bottom lip of the reflector for help in elevation
- install the 4th jaw block at the top position and get a few threads into the nuts to prevent the dish from pivoting forward
- install the 4th jaw block at the bottom position and fasten into place

This is the basic fitment. This took about an hour to put together. As none of the bolts or nuts are tight, there is going to be ample opportunity to rotate on two axes for each of the motor and of the dish, so keep this in mind. The 42mm J pole also has a bolt through it and the reflector bracket, hence why there are currently no bolts to secure the 42mm collar. No other work has been performed to check orientations or to dial in site-specific parameters for elevation, declination, etc. Nothing has been energized either.

There are some observations in this setup:

- the rods for the mast-to-mast clamps are just barely long enough
- to make the rods work, only one nut is used on each side of the 50mm neck
- the rods would ideally be 152mm / 6.0" or longer
- this middle nut cannot be avoided because the fastening points at the back of the 42mm collar will have an interference with the 50mm neck
- the middle nut is effectively a spacer
- because the 42mm J pole has not been cut to length, it becomes obvious that for certain positions of the lower clamps, there will be interference from the LNB arm's lower bolt
- the lower clamps will need to move up as high as possible
- the 42mm J pole will need to be cut at a point above the travel of the LNB arm bolt
- even if the LNB arm bolt is clear of the bottom of the shortened 42mm neck, the new points of interference will be the bottom of the reflector elevation bracket with the top edge of the jaw block and a point above the LNB arm bolt on the arm itself with the flat face of the jaw block
- the photos show the reflector elevation from the "B" side so the angles shown need to be taken with a grain of salt

My inference is that this particular setup with this style of reflector mount might not work for certain latitudes because of the mechanical interferences. This setup is also subjected to a number of moments of force that are likely to affect long-term usability. Beyond the standard bolts that are locked for elevation settings, the lower clamp set is needed to keep the 42mm neck level and plumb. Because the attachment point to the Moteck has been moved out on a longer radius and the mass has increased, the motor is going to see a different moment. I will need to keep an eye to see if there are any implications on gear backlash. I am also thinking that some lock washers might be advantageous on the elevation bolts. Finally, due to the rod length, the use of thread locker might be a consideration for the final orientation.

Due to some other commitments, I likely will not be able to get back to this project for about 4 weeks. I will update this thread when I have a chance.

Any constructive comments and criticisms are appreciated. Everyone else's mileage may vary.

Note to self:

- add nuts to the 3rd jaws to pinch the jaw between two nuts.

This should minimize or eliminate any lateral play on the rear-most jaw on the 42mm neck

I agree the fence post is a simpler solution. Unfortunately, I have neither the antenna farm space nor the sight lines to accommodate anything other than a single dish on a H-H mount at elevation on a pitched roof with a number of possible part alternatives not being available due to supply chain issues or at punitive cross-border shipping rates. In my case, necessity is the mother of invention, so I'm documenting it to save the next guy some grief.

Note to self and some extra thoughts:

- orient the 50mm neck so that the bottom opening is perpendicular to the ground
- install clamps on 50mm neck and use level to ensure threaded rod is parallel to the ground, then fasten in place
- due the tolerances in the through-holes in the jaws, it is possible to affect the yielded declination angle because the whole bracket assembly can shift position
- on an 85cm dish with a 2 degree beamwidth, this might be minorly tolerable but as the dish size increases, the 3dB BW will get tighter
- on a circular reflector, the beamwidth should be be uniform
- this is not a circular reflector
- a drop of 2mm height over 140mm length is -0.82 degrees [tan(error) = -2/140]
- need to ensure the top gap between the two tubes is the same as the bottom gap if the rod slop is unavoidable

Better to be as close to dead nuts right from the get-go on the fitment...

Looks like you are really thinking this through!
Being in the same boat as you, I tried a few things but eventually gave up. I got my Stab HH90 on Friday. After an entire weekend of tinkering I'm up and running on the arc. Beware....this dish is complete hot garbage. The elevation settings on the dish are WAY off. I had to really experiment with the dish and motor elevations to get it to fully track the arc. Another issue i had (probably because my elevation and azimuth settings are so screwy) is that every satellite was exactly 1 degree off (east of anticipated USALS position). Rather than making any more dish adjustments I simply moved my USALS longitude setting west 1 whole degree and it worked like a charm, and honestly i really don't care since it is so bang-on right now.
One more thing I did to beef up the dish is to use the J pole braces on the LNB arm, since it didn't come with any. The holes on the dish are already there, and i just needed a new hole on the LNB arm (top to bottom). No modification of the braces needed. Works great and now the dish is fairly solid. I'm only interested in 87W-129W and I'm nailing every one using USALS. Just waiting on my upgraded LNB from KE4EST.

Thanks for the information. This is helpful to know that others have been turd polishing too. Haha.

My look angles at ground level are clear only for 107W to 121W, but that should still give me upward of 10 satellites, including 2 Echostar positions using circular polarization, to test the tracking.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

The only thing I can see that is compelling is the AV1 decoding done in the A19's hardware instead of the current ATV4K's processor.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Actually, it is. A couple of people PMed me when I posted this, and when I asked for an address, they never responded. Then I just sort of let it go. Send me a PM to continue the discussion
Anony55
Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

This will be a SAD DAY when this passes ....

They complained the last year that we had a bunch of Blow Outs in the Playoffs ... heres an idea, lets Double the amount of teams and hope for Closer games ... ya right.

This never should have went past 8 teams, 10 at the most.

Now, I have heard that play in games are being talked about, such as #13 plays #24 and so forth, to cut the field down (why cut it down, just don't expand it.)
I'm not sure exactly how thats going to work out or if it was just someone talking.

They were also talking about starting the Season earlier ...

I really don't like the National Championship game being the end of January ... if the Semi Finals are over New Years, thats fine with the Championship game the next week.

There are 68 Power 4 teams, so eventually they will get there I wouldn't imagine ...
