I would like to power my SWM dish with the 12v system in my RV. My question is: Is the 21/29v output to the dish DC or AC?

Slightly different question in the same area :
I currently am using a 21V PI with my current 2/3 recvr set up ...
I have a HR24, a C61k Client (I don't count that as a recvr, but they do) and currently now using a HR54 ....

I never removed the external PI, in case I some time remove the HR54 for any period of time, the rest would still work.

Does this set up have 42v on it with the HR54 and the PI21v connected ?
Is that any trouble ?

Been this way for quite a while.

I think I read that in this case the internal PI from the HR54 is disabled.

Ok, so it doesn't Add addl voltage, good to know.

This is interesting and have been keeping up with the thread.
The OP asks if a 12 VDC system can be used to power his SWM. But no mention of the string of components he has a need to power. Comments are going on a tangent.
Straight from receiver to the dish? Any switches, etc. in the mix?

The DIRECT TV PI21R2-16 power inserter states it can output 21 VDC....Volts Direct Current. At up to 1.2 amps/25.2 Watts current draw. Easy. Enough to power a system in the specified installation parameters.
Different setups require different power inserters. Different PI series inserters for different installations.
So the PI-8 and others like it deliver a regulated 29 VDC.
So. What are we working with? Take a peek:

It's an RV. I didn't read if the coax needed to be run in the woods 300 feet. Probably not from any RV I've ever seen with a dish hanging outside on a tripod. Not considering roof mounted Traveler types of self-aiming units.
OK.

Firstly. All of the components. Switches, LNBF's need at least the voltage specified for them.
My tangent. My buddy's RV is 100% solar. Of course the option to plug in to an RV park outlet.
The inverter and MPPT controllers are very efficient. Very! We just upgraded to lithium batteries. Kept the deep cycle batteries too. And 2 additional easel mounted 300 watt ground mounted panels. 5 panels total. It's a toy hauler so they have the storage room. Nice setup. They run the system smart. We converted everything that can be run off of 12/18-24 VDC to eliminate wall warts and brick supplies. Used the better quality eBay boost converters for his TV, sat. To keep load off of the inverter and the obvious why boost voltage to have a power supply to reduce it again.
And I've actualy done the same thing at home for my modest solar to power my fridge and tv, router, modem and a few other things. RV bulbs in the table lamps. Runs all night just fine.

Allrigtey. The LNBF's, switches all have their own internal voltage regulators. They may state they require 29 volts. But may actually (I don't know) regulate that voltage down to 18 volts internally.
Try it. Any man worth his beans needs at least a mediocre multimeter and the smarts to use one.
A coax splicing connector, a short jumper from that to the LNBF, switch, etc.
Cut open to expose the center conductor and outer braid. And measure the voltage getting to the powered device.
If voltage gets too low the system is going to glitch or crap out and not work right or at all.
I suspect a lot of that excess 29 volts is getting dissipated as heat. Right?
10 feet of coax measure 29 volts at the tip and under load. At 100 feet measures, oh lets just say, 22 volts. The system is going to be happy. So will an installer. Not having to pee around with 47 power supplies.

The better boost converters will do the job. Take a 12-13.2 battery voltage and send it out at a higher voltage with adequate wattage. You're golden. Measure the voltage at the endpoint. Start out low and increase it to specs. Or if it works just fine at a little lower voltage. Roll with it.
Or get a high efficiency solar inverter or power bank and call it a day. Not one of those truck stop/wally world jobs.
Yeah.

That's not how electricity works, if you connect multiple sources of x volts you still get x volts, but you can draw more amps. You need diodes to do so - if you look at my .sig below I list:

4xPS242000A via HRFPX4 & PS2x8

What I'm doing is using four 24v power supplies connected to an HRFPX4 which is Sonora gear that has built in diodes which combines the output from four power supplies into a single output. That's connected to a PS2x8 with its outputs connected to the polarity locker, amp and DSWM30s.

That gear only needs two of Sonora's 2A 24v power supplies worth of power to operate, the reason I'm using four is for redundancy. Protects against the loss of any one power supply, but also have each pair powered by a separate outlet served from a different electrical panel.

Yeah.
I have three different off-grid solar situations (RV and 2 homes). I originally started this thread as my mountain property had few options for dish placement. The dish only got signal 150' from the cabin. I was having issues with the receiver resetting and I thought it could be due to a voltage drop from the P21. Shopping for a P29 I was curious if I could just run a buck voltage converter ($10 on Amazon) using the 12v from my system (and it was cheaper than a P29). I had the P21 on hand so I used the housing and coax block with the new converter (which was exactly the same size as the one it replaced). Input comes from a 12v cigarette plug, output was set to get 21v at the dish. Looks factory and works perfect. All my solar systems have pure sine inverters running off trojan or LifePo4 batteries with MPPT controllers. May seem silly to not just plug in a P29 but it gives me more power to run my Keurig lol.

That's an oversimplification that relies on the sources being connected in parallel.

Oh. Here I go. Hopefully asked the right questions in the previous reply.
Electricity can be like your gangster best buddy. It can go out of its way to help you but won't hesitate to make you a "Hey, remember that 'thing' in The Hamptons" thing" You know.
As much as I despise cheap chinese junk. They do have some pretty cool gizmos. I wish we did the same kind of things in the CONUS. We can. We should.
My buddy with the toy hauler. He lives in AZ. But comes up every summer and parks at my other buddy's home.
He's a DOD contractor. And union. So a few months of layoff in the summer is no worries.
A friendly conversation. Could you show me your solar setup? Turned into a cool upgrade. His RV center installed the initial system with a couple of golf cart (labeled solar) batteries. As mentioned they had ok power off grid.
I think we doubled it easily. Less monitoring of the charge controller display in the kitchen in the evenings.
The new one has bluetooth. Or greentooth as they call it in Florida. lol!
I learned during the hurricanes some years ago in FL. Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. All in a short period one after the other. Had fiber Internet. So running my modem , ONIT, off of 12 vdc was possible. My laptop on the other hand needed 18 vdc. I grabbed the APC's and forklift batteries from work.
Lots to be said there. 5 days w/o juice and a week with no water. Showering in a pair of shorts under the rain gutters.
Neighbor lady asking when I thought we would get water again. She needed to flush the commode. While the main was a geyser by the oak tree that blew over and roots severed it. Pointed to the pool and asked her if she had a mop bucket. You would have thought I was Einstein from the look on her face.
Anyhoo. Wondering if a 12 volt battery would at least charge my laptop. Found out not only would it chatge. But would run. And just fine. Even though the sticker said 18 volts input.
I was making percolator coffee with a sterno can under the electric stove burners.
I think the suckiest thing though were the folks who prepped and stocked up. And bought a generator before the semi's with scalpers lined up to sell you one at way jacked up prices.
All proud of your generator chained to a tree or pickup. Going to sleep with a window a/c running. Fridge keeping the beer and grub cold. Waking up in the morning and the place is hot, fridge off, no a/c. Generator running outside still.
But no juice. And go outside to see the damned thing was swapped out during the night for a pawn shop lawn mower.
My friend Jack was smart. Jacked up the Ford and slid his genset underneath. And slapped an electric fencer on the truck body with a hidden pull string tied to a chain switch to turn it on and off. Rednecks are amazing!
S
That's an oversimplification that relies on the sources being connected in parallel.

That's the only possible way you could connect two coaxial power sources.

Nobody said that the sources had to have coaxial outputs. Since the problem was solved already, the discussion is going well beyond addressing the thread topic into matters of dogma.

The boost/buck converter using the PI21's bias tee facilities was an easy solution to the problem. That it isn't conventional, offered by a well-known retailer or isn't providing more than 21VDC is immaterial.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

In Oregon, our premium boat gas is about a dollar more than our corn premium. Several stations only offer the non-corn premium grade.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)
