When I'm wrong, I'm wrong. When Disney announced its streaming service all the way back in 2017, I was there to comment. I said all streaming services were going to blow up in price (I was right about that) but I was wrong about one big thing. I figured Disney would simply grab users by the throat and never let go. I thought they would wall off all their content so you had no choice but to subscribe or you'd never see Darth Vader, Princess Jasmine, or Tony Stark ever again. This would make Disney a ton of money, but make us all poor and unhappy.

Flash forward six years and you'll see videos like this one:

It is frankly inconceivable that an entertainment powerhouse like Disney could actually end its streaming venture altogether. Even the maker of that video admits to that. More likely, Disney+ will just stop being your one-stop shop for all that older content you crave. They'll focus on new releases, shop the more popular content to other streamers, and the rest will go in the "Disney vault" where you'll only see it every few years.

How did it come to this?

Because business laws can be stupid that's why. Somehow, it makes more sense financially not to carry something than to carry it. At least sometimes. If there's some sort of licensing or residual to be paid, a streamer can find itself paying for old content over and over. (Sorry streaming companies, I have no sympathy. Do you have any idea how many times I've re-bought The White Album?) Sometimes a company can get tax benefits by writing off something that didn't perform to expectations. And, at some point it just becomes expensive to maintain that many hard drives and data centers if you're making everything available all the time.

To put in plainly, these are stupid excuses and the laws that enable them should be changed. It should never be more profitable to have a flop than a hit. And it's kind of a jerk move to take residual income away from a performer who is entitled to it, just because you don't want to pay it. That's why a bunch of content creators have been on strike throughout the summer.

Will the dream of Disney+ truly die?

Yes, I think it will. Look, this blog is full of bad predictions I've made. It's not going to stop me from continuing to predict. For decades, Disney made money by creating fake scarcity with its content. They deliberately took movies off store shelves. They kept good films away from second-run theaters. They created buzz by only rolling out the stuff you want every few years then forced you to pay through the nose.

Disney continues to trade off this fake scarcity in its theme parks, where it can now cost over $1,000 a day for a family to visit. Yet, with all its marketing savvy they seem to be losing money. I say "seem" because it's all accounting tricks. When you're talking about movies that cost $500 million or more to make, there's no real understanding of how much money is really "made" or "lost" by the parent company. Scores of accountants make sure of that.

I pay for Disney+. It's not just for the new content. Am I really alone?

If the only reason I paid for Disney+ was its new content, I'd have canceled it by now. They've failed to bring the goods for at least a year. Instead, they've had a run of increasingly derivative MCU and Star Wars shows that just get worse and worse. I've been less and less impressed with their theatrical releases too. The company is determined to remake every old cartoon and replace the traditional animation with CGI. It hasn't worked.

I keep paying for Disney+, even though I could cancel at any time. Why? Because I can find stuff that I like watching over and over. I can watch all or some of the MCU films. I can watch Star Wars content from back when it was good. And, if I really want to go back and rewatch The Rescuers or Gus, I can do that too. There's enough catalog stuff to keep me coming back. At least for now.

Here's the funny thing that Disney, Netflix, and others seem to have forgotten: if you keep charging more money for less content, people will just stop coming. It's called a "value equation." It may not show up on your accountants' balance sheets but it is real. And if you don't start paying attention to it, your service won't be real for much longer. Just sayin.

Never trust a service that promises to back-fill their library.

I this case, they removed more of the old content for "outdated depictions" than they added.

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

To each there own but I've found that Windows can't do much more than Linux can. Can't have everything. ☹️

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

I used to pin the C: drive to the Win Taskbar and it would open in cascading style

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.
Mister B
What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
