What going on with Dish?

For the past few months it seem's like Dish is having serious customer exit.
Or is Dish going to merge with another provider?
I remember when I had C-band satellite service, one could actually do a custom channel line up of the channels that you really like to view. It seems like with such advances in technology these days Dish/Directv could do the same, could they? I donot need nor want dozens of music channels.

Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Dish would love to buy DIRECTV, but the money isn't there, and those days have passed.

Agree there is no reason to buy DirectTV, if there ever was. What would DISH a company facing big problems do with another Company also facing big problems, with very different equipment and frequencies. If Direct TV were not also losing so many customers then maybe yes, buy it and replace the customers equipment to DISH. Sell off whatever you can I guess. But that is a huge acquisition cost however.

And I don't think DISH has the money or credit right now to do it either.

No, but with AT&T announcing it is putting up it's 70% for sale next August, I do wonder what AT&T is going to be asking for it.

Something that is losing 2 Million subs a year, Satellites getting older, no plans for new ones, looking to be unprofitable in, roughly, 2 years.

DirecTV is also still carrying about $10-11 Billion in debt.

If someone offers a box of wine for it, AT&T should take the deal.

AT&T bought TCI (Tele-Communications Inc) and then sold AT&T Broadband Inc to Comcast. I don't know how they did with U-Verse TV.

I also forgot, different AT&T as that was the real AT&T back then. All companies that grow big are more or less evil since they wouldn't have gotten big and would have been eaten alive by bigger companies otherwise.

I think everyone wants to be able to hand pick channels and just pay for that. With conglomeration of networks, that has become impossible, and has been for a couple decades.

Well, exactly- you just beat me to it, but I read the OP to be about wanting to tailor subscription, but then replies were about how to set up fav lists. Certainly the rigidity in channels packaging goes into decisions to cord-cut from sat / cable. As well as into decisions not to cut the cord because of streaming availability issues with certain channels that may now be received which are considered "must keeps," or even simply easy-to-use DVR. The pay TV industry needs your money, and bushels of it, to maintain its accustomed standard of living. Poor DiSH is now seeing a precipitous downswing in the # of those willing to put up with ever-escalating monthly costs, even though it's not the worst offender. Many went for DiSH in the first place on the promise of more reasonable rates, and are simply more rate-sensitive than the average sub. Some will find replacement viewing from offair and/or streaming, and some may just find other things to do than watching TV.

Update on my new Apple iphone 18PM:
Battery now lasts for 4 days or 96 hours and the most drain is having the Tesla app running in the background and polling emails and Texts. My old 15PM was barely lasting 24 hours.

Heard a story from one of the Apple influencers on YT that the 18PM has a bug where it stops connecting to AT&T service. Doesn't affect Verizon or T-Mobile. Apple is replacing the phones. Anyone else hear of this? Defective Modem?

Comcast called fiber pricing "irrational" because the ROI is over three years. What is irrational to me is Comcast internet is based on lines they put in the ground decades ago at this point, for the most part. Is copper that much more expensive to maintain?

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

What ever I get out of the Deli is put into a container when I ask them for it, they weight the container and then add the deli product, thats the way its suppose to be, if the rest of the world is screwing you, you should try the place down the street.

I' m really not suppose to have Ice Cream, or at least Moderately ....
Depending on the amount of sugar and sodium (don't think theres sodium in it, but Carbs probably is.)

They are made every day at this place ... it's a little Ma and Pop store ...

When ever I order something, they weigh the container (like everyone is suppose to) then weigh the product, so you actually get what your paying for lb wise ...

I did look into that ... the ones I get have about 65mg, which is very little ... but then I wouldn't expect much to be in Ice Cream.

We're less than 4 weeks away from Voyager 1 reaching a distance of one light day from Earth

I've always been super interested in things space related so this is a pretty cool event coming up. Nov 18, 2026 early in the morning, Voyager 1 will reach the distance of one full light day from Earth. Took almost 50 yrs. I was 13 when it launched.

All DMA's now Western Arc

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Looks like Charlie Ergen will never give up satellite TV. The reason Echostar 25 the most poweful DBS satellite ever built at 110 location already. Also Echostar 26 another super satellite on order for 119 orbital location will be ready in 15 months. he will have 110/119 for another 20 years. Dish will be the only satellte company left. The reason for rural areas and some people like satellite easy to operate and change channels in seconds.

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

I watch mostly SD channels (H&I, Start and ION, etc.). There are plenty of advertisers, this time of the year it is mostly Medicare Advantage plans, auto extended warranties and the occasional walk-in-tub. They know who is watching.

Prescription drug costs

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

A couple years ago I had to take some antibiotics and used the GoodRx app. Went to Walmart and the person behind the desk knew me and told me to just buy them outright....the GoodRx price was a LOT higher. She said they aren't supposed to tell customers when they see they are being screwed.

Actually I take just 2 prescriptions, Atorvastatin and Lisinopril. They cost me $6 each for 100 pills. Next year that will be nothing.

Walmart and Sam's pharmacies have "zero rated" prescriptions lists where generics are $4 (or less). If yours are on that list, then of course GoodRx isn't going to help. Also, GoodRx isn't always the cheapest discount program. For me, the cheapest is usually Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs.

My wife and I both take Gabapentin for nerve pain. With our Medicare Plan D plan it use to be free. Now we have to pay for it. Yesterday my wife got her prescription at CVS and the pharmacist dug around and got the cost cut in half with what he said was RX. I am guessing this was GoodRX.

Here in NY State, if you're 65 or older you're eligible for the state's EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) Part D supplement that limits your maximum co-pay to $20. The co-pays range from $3 to $20 depending on the tier. The Part D included with my Advantage plan has many tier 1 drugs at no co-pay.
