Relatively new to SatGuys, but some fresh thoughts on radio stations and the way I do things:
1. I'm atypical of most younger people, I like analog radio and like to tune into analog radio, and specifically-formatted stations CAN be a good thing, if it's a good format. Here in NE TN I think we have a better radio landscape than many areas, although some stations have gone downhill, our main talk station (WFHG 92.9) used to be pretty great, with a decent amount of local programming in the mornings and a little in the evenings, along with the syndicated talk shows. They've cut out the local stuff except for news/weather/traffic and I've gotten disgusted with talk radio (and all politics in genera) so I rarely listen. WQUT (101.5) is the main classic rock station and must've had a regime change in the past few years because it's added an HD signal (meh), cranked up the audio processing (double meh) and in general is more annoying to listen to now. Couple this with the decline of Johnboy and Billy's new content (call me redneck), and I tune this one in occasionally. The main country station (WXBQ) is okay, it would be pretty decent if modern country was listenable.

Then there is the Possum (WPWT), my favorite station. It's a 10,000 watt daytime AM with a good coverage FM translator. When I lose the FM signal I just tune to AM and its there. It's not AM stereo but 10,000 watts means good range. Classic country all the way! 80s and 90s and plays the artists who weren't the biggest hits but had great music, very good station. I like stations that I can listen to at home, the music played isn't just conducive to those who are driving (hard to explain but hopefully makes sense). After 7pm WPWT has few commercials and almost every song is great, good local DJs keep you company. I can sit on the couch and just listen for a while... In fact I record this and WVEK occasionally with cassettes (I'm one of those people haha)

WVEK is the "Classic Hits" station but I think it just plays better classic rock than 'QUT, with fewer commercials and more 70s rock and other hits, my 2nd goto station here.
2. Other observation is that an actual stereo reciever is the best way to recieve FM broadcasts, people forget that FM radio was (like TV) intended for home reception, not in vehicles, FM stations are primarily horizontally polarized. I use an old TV antenna (big one) and split it out (with distribution amp) to my TV, OTA DVR, and the stereo receiver. I've even got the old rotor used on it to work and found a control box to rotate the thing.

Last summer I went through every FM frequency turning the antenna 360 deg and logging what I could recieve from the house, which is quite a lot (and absorbed my evenings after work). Some of the stations received were surprising, like WESC out of upstate SC, 75+ miles away through mountains. When aimed toward this one I can get pretty good stereo reception, not too much hiss.

My AM reception at home is more basic, I've got a tunable loop I bought so I can receive WSM (650) at night and WPWT during the day if FM goes down. But it works!

Anyway, just some ramblings of someone who likes all things radio and likes going beyond average with my AV setups. I like working for my signal, whether it be TV, FM, AM or FTA satellite. Also being free programming doesn't hurt!

AM became infected by toxicly political commentary programming a long time ago. WLS was my main go-to for pop/rock and is but one example of this dystopic devolution. Migration of music programming to FM left a void in AM that was unfortunately exploited. That band is now largely unlistenable to me, as well as most of the FM band, mainly for the aforementioned reason. I just leave it on NPR

Also, I didn't intend my post to spark partisan bickering (yes I pick a side but it's a matter of holding your nose), I try to leave politics out of technical discussions because I like technical-ese haha. I mainly like to hear if others go way above average for their radio reception (any kind of radio, anything RF actually), or if I was born 40 years too late (I think so).
Additionally, I'm not defending every radio station out there, a lot of them suck actually. But there are some darn good ones still around. And I have my techniques for avoiding commercials (don't they seem to be more annoying by the year?), mainly, recording stations in the overnight hours, far fewer commercials.
Thanks all!

We need to stop picking sides & holding noses and get to some party diversity. Having 2 and only 2 political parties can only end up in dangerous polarization as we see today.

I never think to switch over to am/fm having used SiriusXM for 15 plus years now. However I went ahead and cancelled SiriusXM 2 weeks ago when my last 1yr deal expired. Been getting phone calls daily until I went off on them yesterday for the call at 8am. I've been using YouTube music most of the last 3 months since getting a new vehicle.

I'll have to look at the HD radio stations next time I can remember it. The local college used to have a jazz and big band HD subchannel. 40s big band is my predominant listening genre.

I was recently in the Chicago metro area an kept the radio in my rental car on WLS 890. What a great lineup! The Ray Stevens Show, The Chris Plante Show, Dan Bongino, Guy Benson, Mark Levin, Chris Plante, and one of my all time favorites, Rich Valdés America at Night. Thanks so much for the recommendation. Sometimes its hard to find quality programming like this all in one place. I'm grateful that I can also stream WLS on my Alexa devices at home too.

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

So, the New season won't be on the same day commercial free ???

Looks like the On Demand will Still be the Next Day ...

If you have the Top tier, you could get the LIVE Network feed same as any Cable or OTA would.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

I used to pin the C: drive to the Win Taskbar and it would open in cascading style

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
