Dish general questions

I am brand new to satellite and ask for your patience w/ me!! I am ready to jump on DishNetwork's current deal for the free 811 HD receiver and a 522 DVR. I have 3 questions about satellite set-ups:

1. I want a 2 room set-up, the 811 HD receiver to go on a Hitachi 57G500 in the great room and the 522 DVR on a 13" kitchen TV. Is it possible to record on the DVR in the kitchen and then playback on the Hitachi in the great room? I'm not concerned about recording in HD (yet!). I've spoken to Dish reps on the phone and have been given conflicting answers. One tells me that a DVR only plays back @ the tv it's connected to and another says it's possible because the 522 is a dual receiver. HELP!!!!!!!!!

2. Will my tv's picture in picture work with satellite tv?

3. I've read that Dish sometimes requires 2 dishes for HD reception. I'm in northwestern Connecticut and the calls I've made never mentioned that I'd need 2 dishes. Any idea when and where this is required?

Sorry if this is satellite 101, but I want all the facts before I commit to Dish. Thanks in advance for your input.

ok, I'll get it started... (most of your answers are floating around, but probably not in one place).

the 522 is a dual ouput receiver. It includes two remotes so can be accessed from two rooms. You can run a coax from the 13" to the 57 and watch the PVR. BUT, your not going to like the picture.

You'd probably be better off putting both boxes by the 57 and running the coax to the kitchen. Then you could hook up the 811 via dvi or component, and the 522 with S-Video.

Even so, you may be dissapointed with the SD picture on the HD TV.

Picture in Picture - Perhaps, but it depents how you hook it up. You have to think about what you want to use for the two PIP sources. An over-the-air antenna is one possibility (plus that might get you HD locals). You could also split the 2nd TV RF out from the 522 and use it as the 2nd PIP source.

In general, 2 dishes are no longer needed for HD. All that's left on the 2nd dish are CBSHD (which are only eligible to a few), and some low-budget local cannels (like spanish and shopping, again only applies to certain markets).

ps: An installer might charge extra to run the extra coax between the two rooms (unless the 522 install normally includes the connection to the 3rd TV).

Just realized: The 522 is a dual tuner receiver normally used to connect two TVs. So the 811 + 522 should get you 3 connections. What you're thinking should be ok too, and make no difference to the installer.

522 thought: I take it the box supports recording on both tuners and watching different PVR events in both rooms? Hmmm, that's 4 streams. Even the 721 doesn't do that (still way less hard drive bandwidth then the 921).

hi and welcome to the world of Satellite TV

First, are you planing on connecting 2 or 3 TVs-

If you are looking to hook up 3 different TV's, then you will not be able to view anything recorded on the 522 if the Hitachi is not one of the TV's hooked up to the 522 (unless there is a way to split the signal and bring a coax feed into the Hitachi, that would mean that you would not be able to control the functions while watching the Hitachi. That is unless you split the signal from the second tuner that has a UHF remote that would be able to transmit commands through the walls)

If you plan on just connecting the Hitachi and the 13", then you can do what is written below.

The 522. is a 2 tuner receiver. If you want the ability to watch TV on both your Hitachi and 13" TV in the Kitchen. I would suggest putting the 522 in the room where the Hitachi is. The Hitachi could use the 1st tuner in the 522. Then the installer should run the second coax to the 13" TV which would use the second tuner in the 522. As for recording something on the 13" to later watch on the Hitachi, Itis my understanding that both of the tuners in the 522 share the hard drive, so you should be able to watch anything you recorded on any TV, but maybe someone else who has a 522 can confirm this

I am assuming you would also be installing your 811 on your Hitachi. Since your 522 and 811 will be on separate inputs, you will be able to use your PIP.

If you were hoping to use PIP with only the 522, you would need to have both of the 522 tuners plugged into your Hitachi

As for a second dish- There are some areas that utilizes a second dish pointing at a satellite in position 61.5(referred to as a wing satellite). Some markets place local channels on this satellite, which would allow you to get this dish free of charge if you wanted it. But as of right now the only HD channel left on that Satellite is CBS-HD. You would have to check with Dish to see if you would qualify for that channel. This is regulated based on the market you are in, whether it is an Owned and Operated Network station or affiliated station. If it is an affiliate, you may need a waiver from them to get CBS-HD

One thing you did not state, do you have an Over the Air Antenna (OTA). You will need one to get your locals in HD with the 811

It may seem a bit overwhelming, but it is much easier done than it appears to be written here by me. Maybe someone can explain it better, if I sound confusing

As a 522 owner I would recommend that you do a Free Dish promotion instead of DHA and use a 510 instead of the 522. The 510 is much more stable than the 522. My 522 is still showing many minor bugs that I find annoying, I am afraid as DISH corrects the minor bugs they will introduce more problems than they cure. The 501/508/510 all use the same software that has been prettywell debugged. I don't know of a HDTV set that will do picture in picture in the HDTV mode they will only do standard definition PIP. If you locate both receivers at the HDTV set and back feed the ch.3/4 signal from the 510 to the 13 inch TV you should be all set for watching both TVs. With Free Dish you will own the equipment rather than leasing the equipment from DISH Network.

I just installed an HDTV, 811/508 install for PIP. This is what i suggest:

811 to the Hitachi
522 first tuner to your Hitachi, run second tuner to your kitchen.

Output both the 811/522 to your TV's PIP configurations.

The 811 will output from two outputs, so it's possible to use one for HDTV (DVI, if compatable) if it looks better than say, Video 1, and use two different inputs for your PIP.

Now in the Hornets and Hurricanes markets we just get the TV promise screen. But Directv still charges sports fee I am assuming.
Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

One thing these five teams have in common is that they all signed exclusive local streaming rights deals with DAZN, replacing their traditional regional sports networks.

I know the Spurs will have 22 games available OTA on KMYS-TV CW35 in the San Antonio market, but they'll still be available on DAZN as well. The CW35 broadcasts are an additional option, not an exclusive arrangement.

With channel 680 now available, we should be able to get all the Spurs home feeds on NBALP again! (as well as the other teams above of course)

You can't even trust the cost per ounce info in grocery stores anymore

I'm surprised Walmart hasn't banned this guy from all of their stores. He has been on their CASE the past few months.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner.

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

- Watch Out for Bag Sizes: Always check the label carefully, as many specialty roasters now sell 12-ounce (three-quarter pound) bags while keeping the price or visual impression similar to a full pound. [1, 2, 3]

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

I had a BUD in the 80's before the little small dishes started showing up. The signals were unsrambled and then I had to get a monthly code.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

All DMA's now Western Arc

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Also Echostar 26 another super satellite on order for 119 orbital location will be ready in 15 months. he will have 110/119 for another 20 years. Dish will be the only satellte company left. The reason for rural areas and some people like satellite easy to operate and change channels in seconds.

Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

Yes, I considered D* as I knew some of my favorite channels had better PQ but too many require moving up to the "Choice" package and incurring the Regional Sports Fee.
I do not have METV or any of the Weigel owned channels here in El Paso.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Which is what is interesting, I see the 4KFox channel on 148-01 but we're not subscribed to our Locals. So why it's coming in is puzzling. I thought that maybe it was a perk for Dish subscribers for the MLB Postseason.

I set a Timer for the Indiana - Ohio State game on Saturday. I'll take advantage of it while I can.

Even though it didn't work out for the Hoosiers, this event recorded and I was able to watch it in full 4K HDR.

Hello again

I haven't posted in almost 17 years. Over the air, sat, offline, anything-but-the-internet is still one of my avid pursuits. Been playing with offline tv viewing and offline web browsing. I have great appreciations for this site still being here. It's so hard to find public communities that haven't sold out to social media company.

From what I understand, it's just saving a article or whatever, to Save it so you can read it later ....
Unless he's talking something entirely different ... the way I am looking at it, you Still need the Internet to load it originally.
