Hi All,

I've been surfing around here for a couple of days, posted a few comments. I have a couple of questions, I'm basically satellite stupid. :)

We decided to switch to Dish after calling my telco to order DSL. They offered a package deal for phone/dsl/dish which was hard to pass up. I've had Road Runner for a while and the connection constantly drops during the day so I'd rather have a little slower connection (DSL) and have it be reliable. Plus on the lower channels we get a very quality picture on all our TV the cable co. has been here twice and hasn't fixed anything.

We ordered the Top 120 package. It came with the free DVR upgrade. So we'll be getting the Dual Tuner DVR and 1 addtional receiver. I read @ the dish website that if a receiver is not connected to a phone line it's an extra $5/mo. I read some where else that it only applies to the dual tuner setups. I'm already having the phone jack in my bedroom moved closer to my TV for my DSL since this is where my router is already set up. In the second bedroom where the second receiver is going to go, there is a phone wire but no jack. If don't setup a jack in there am I going to be charged extra?

Is the installer going to run all new wire from the dish or try and patch into our exsisting cable wire? I suspect that our reception problems were caused by the wiring exsisting in the house.

Thank you for your time,

Dan

Your DSL is that slow? Around here, you can get 3 MB down for only $29.99. You're paying $141 with internet?

With DISH and their America's Everything Pak at $87.99 for up to 2 rooms, or $92.99 for up to 4 rooms, you get all the premiums. If you add DSL for $30, you're going to save at least around $18 per month. Plus, if you're bundling you probably got it for cheaper than that. That's nothing to sneeze at. But if DSL costs more than that for you AND is slower, I can understand. Anything around 1 MB down is a bit slow by today's standards.
webbydude
Waaaaaay off-topic, but DSL speeds is a lot like cable service. It really all depends on where you live. When I lived out in the country, my DSL speeds where pretty awesome, roughly 2MB down. After moving to Canton, it took a considerable drop...roughly 300KB (yes...KB!!).

With regards to Danny Boy; it's a shame about your installer being afraid of rain. Unless it's a major typhoon...OR!!...huge amounts of lightning, I (and most other installers I know of) will work in the rain. Yes, it does suck. But it's part of the job. I hope the price Time Warner quoted you isn't a special or promotion price. Sticker shock is what drove you to Dish in the first place. It may yet bring you around again. Good luck either way.
D
I'm going to call the cable company tomorrow to see if I can get the price down a bit. I really don't need all the premiums.

The only thing I really watch is Sopranos on HBO which isn't that big of a deal for me. Since I last had Digital cable (May 2004) they've added a lot of stuff. They have DIY, HGTV, Food, AOL Music and a host of other things on demand. I'm not really into all that stuff although it's nice to just press play and there it is.

I've already had my DVR box freeze on me twice while just channel surfing to see what they have. It froze shut off then rebooted and updated itself again taking about 5 minutes each time. I'm not to thrilled about that. I'm considering trading in my DVR for 2 regular boxes.

One thing that I've noticed is a lot of stuff on the 100 and 200's is just rebroadcast on 700 and 800's.

As for DSL speeds, I know DSL is normally slower then cable but I didn't except that much of a difference. I downloaded open office (65 MB) on cable a couple days ago and it only took 3 or 4 minutes. When I downloaded it for my sister laptop it took almost 15. I'm very picky about waiting for downloads. :)

I may revisit dish in the future when we move to an area without snow (hopefully 2007)

One thing I was confused about is I wanted to go with digital phone from the cable company, they said it isn't available in my area yet. How is that if Road Runner is available and that's the backbone I don't understand. I'm going to contact vontage tomorrow.

Have them run ALL new wire. Good installers never use diplexers
ZandarKoad beat me to the zing. :D

PROPERLY USED, there's not a DAMN thing wrong with using a diplexer. Just did an install today where I diplexed TV2 out of a 625 back to near the DP34, and then directly into ANOTHER diplexer to get it to near the TV.

Going through four diplexers, two barrel connectors (wall plates), two surge suppressors, and 100' of RG-6 caused enough loss that channel 60 was a bit snowy, so I dialed it down to channel 35 - PERFECT SQ & PQ.

This hous already has enough cable to lift the house with it - I wasn't going to run ANOTHER interior wall RG-6, or add ANOTHER RG-6 to the dual I ran to the 811 (Sat/TV2 plus OTA). Note that I DID keep the OTA feed "pure". THAT's where diplexers can become a real issue - weak OTA signals.

A good installer knows when to use diplexors, an installer that uses them all the time or never uses them is not a good installer. There is no garauntee that the local guy is going to be any more of a better installer than what you would get from a farmed out installer or one that works for the company directly, fact is is that the ones who work directly for the company have to go to the job and with recent changes the possibility of you being missed by them is incredibly slim. Another thing to consider is that the jobs that are farmed out go to local contractors and local rsp's who employee local people to do the job.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

SpaceX has held talks with Boost's parent company EchoStar in recent months about launching its own signature wireless service through a deal with the company, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
Musk, the SpaceX CEO, has discussed the deal personally, meeting with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen last month, according to the people. The potential deal may result in SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile or SpaceX gaining access to its network, which it leases from AT&T and T-Mobile US, the people said.
Access to those lease agreements would be a coup for SpaceX. The back door would allow Musk to make a play for a U.S. wireless market that equity research firm MoffettNathanson estimates is worth $235 billion. But the proposed service may need consent from those carriers for the service to actually launch, the people said.

Can't remember where or who I saw predict this. :D

It wouldn't surprise me to see Elon soon own all of DISH / Echostar in the future.

Again, why would Musk want a TV Service, specially one that is losing over a million subscribers a year.

Phone service…maybe, but not TV.

I know he wants TV. He wants to deliver EVERYTHING to EVERYWHERE.
Again, if so, why would he want Dish/Sling of all the providers?

He could deliver anything without actually owning, for example, watching the Lions game in my Tesla Y on it's screen via the YT app, while on the way to my future in-laws on Sunday.

Just a guess on my part but there may be some value to aquring to get all the retransmision agreements that are in place even though at some point they need to be renewed

If Musk really wants to buy Boost, he might get a great price once Dish Wireless is out of Chapter 11.

Boost just lost 182,000 subs in the 3rd quarter-

Is Dish like Iran in one way...they both will totally collapse by end of week :)

Other than the price, my experience with Boost is not that different than what I experienced with my years with Cricket. I will be curious to see what happens if SpaceX takes the reins.

Dang. That had to hurt. I would have not handled it that well. Surprised it wasn't brought up by Heff at the challenge.

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

I could very well be wrong....it has been a LOT of years but back when I had a 722K it seemed like when you went back to the scan screen that you could just scan again and it would ADD those channels to the previous list or you could delete the previous results and only add the channels from the new scan.

I am not sure about that but I do know that you could manually add additional channels just by entering the actual RF channel number and the older receivers would add the virtual channels to your list

Like I said.....that has been many years ago. Swapped my 722K for a Hopper in 2012.

It does seem like I remember having to delete the existing channels when we did a rescan. Back then our local stations KEPT monkeying around with things and it was non-stop complaints from customers about their channels not coming in. Got so bad that I stopped selling OR installing OTAs....something I had been doing since 1984 so you know it HAD to be pretty bad.

Balls
Bears. Took care of the elite Seahawks defense in a great performance.
NFC North. The entire division is 2 games above .500
Lions. Finally handed an L to that weird Minnesota team. Good vibes for Jack Campbell.
Pitt. Took the lead of the division convincingly.
Bengals vs Titans game. Fireworks game. Not sure it was a well-played game, but it sure was fun. JoeyB with 6 scores... and 4 turnovers.
Denver. They keep winning, man. Payton is a baller of a coach.
Packers. Thorough beatdown of the hard-to-read Panthers.
Jags. Demolished the hapless Colts.
Rams. The Super team finally wins back-to-back games.

Goats
Vikings. Took their first L. I know their D is insane, but their offense is setting back football to the 1950's.
Cowboys. Lost a 2-score lead vs. the Gardner Minshew-led Cards... at home. Embarrassing.
Browns. Playing for the division lead by scoring 6 points.
Bucs vs Falcons game. Setting modern football back to the ice age. Honorable mention to Tua Penix err ... Michael Tagov .... well, you know what I mean.
Bengals fans acting like Burrow just won the MVP after his performance. I get it. 6 scores is awesome. But. He also turned the ball over 4 times and required overtime to beat the 1-win Titans. So spare me the parade.
Chiefs. Not because they lost. It was a close game decided on the last play vs. a divisional rival on the road. That's always rough. But because of their whining over the CLEAR flag they got on the would-be winning play. They are used to getting the calls, and when they don't, they complain. Honorable mention to Mahomes for this quote: "I mean, at the end of the day, you have to go with whatever is called, but a lot of times in those big moments, the little stuff doesn't get called like that"... so you admit it was a penalty?? Just shut up, man.
Colts. They began the fire sale earlier in the week, and it showed. This team is cooked; Daniel Jones should go to the bench, and Steichen will be fired pretty soon.
Chargers. Wow. That's all I got.
Miami. For having the Pats sort of on the ropes and letting them go.
Eagles. Another team that should consider selling some assets. They are going nowhere.

Just the same vilification as players like Brady experienced, a product of their success and largely overblown (just like them 'getting all the calls').

Well you see him more because he is incredibly talented. And yes, typically players try to spin things being in their favor. This isn't cricket where sportsmanship (except in Australia) is expected.

The NFL, for some time, has protected the marquee quarterbacks. Brady, Mahomes, Allen, Burrow - they all get the calls.
The lower tier QBs don't seem to get the same benefit. For instance, some of the hits that Darnold took from Chicago on Monday night would have been a flag frenzy if any of the marquee QBs were hit like that. And I am not in any way a fan of anything Seahawks related. I am a fan of balanced officiating - and that hasn't been the case for a while.

My team is not immune to this - Fred Warner laid some vicious hits in the Commanders game that I thought should have been flagged - one was, but they picked it up.

Not a good look on NFL officials.
