Dish Network,
How I DON'T Love thee, Let me count the ways…

Arrived an hour outside of the scheduled time for installation.

Left Dish Network Trash in the street in front of my house

Used my ladder without permission
Did NOT return my ladder to its' original location when done

Did NOT properly align the Dish Network Dish (Fluctuating around 70% - 75%)
Although this is within guidelines of Dish Network it does NOT represent a PROFESSIONAL installation
(When realigned it was over 100)

Removed Direct TV dish when told specifically to LEAVE it intact
Destroyed Direct TV Dish requiring replacement
(Left it laying on the ground alongside the house even though they walked right past the trash cans)

Installer repeatedly moved the Digital Recorder while turned on…
(Problems caused to the hard drive by this activity are well documented and are not covered by the 90 day warrantee)

Replacement DTV Dish did not have a ground connected
Although 4 leads were tailed down from head of DTV dish only one of 4 leads into the house had been prepared for switching back to DTV (Installer was told of the return to DTV)

Second installer after being shown the mangled DTV dish did not bother throwing it into the adjacent trash can.
(Knowing the previous problems he might have at least asked if he should take it with him or throw it away)

The Original installers did not properly connect the receiver to the existing system
(Second TV was not set to TV2)

(DVR was locked in Dual mode)

NTSC Outputs for TV2 were tied to Video 1 of Primary TV

Remote control was not programmed for use with the TV

No use instruction was provided in the use of or differences between DTV and Dish Network…

Dish Network Support
Let it be known that 3.5 hours of getting bounced around voicemail, being disconnected, refused access to a supervisor pushed me to my limits…

The final straw was that when it FINALLY worked, I did not have all the same local channels that I was told I would have when I signed up for the system. , although Dish Network did substitute the BINGO network…

Buyer Beware...
Dont order until you make sure WHICH locals Dish Includes
Dont sign the release until you check to make sure EVERYTHING works..

Thankfully, I had not disconnected my Direct TV and cancelled Dish within 72 hours...

The phone lines to cancel service on Dish Network are jammed...

The first is important, but the second is critical advice for EVERY customer.

Do NOT signoff until you are happy, or at the very least, confident that your installer will follow through. For example, I've had to leave an install in less than perfect shape (but receivers running) because I didn't have a specific part on hand - like maybe a dual RG-6 plus phone jack wall plate. I have asked the customer to signoff - if it was the last day of the pay period. ;) By the time such a thing happens, the customer knows what kind of guy I am, and KNOWS I'll be back to finish up.

Sorry - gotta disagree with you there. There are technical and safety reasons to ground the pan AND the coax.

Smart move - but brace yourself to fight the charge from E* for the box.

In closing, I'm sorry you ran into such a lousy company - it makes the rest of us look bad, and I want ALL the hacks GONE.

Other than to conform to UEC Uniform Electrical Code there is no need to ground the dish itself... I got a call from the Dish Network Pro Installer and even he agreed it should have been grounded. (And he knew about the grounding blocks)

I dont intend to continue this thread, I will go over to the DTV side...

Aside from the Installation 4.5 hours in voice mail, getting transfered around and getting disconnected twice was enough for me to pull the plug.

Dish network is planning a review of the company they contracted with for this install. (That company is about to expand to installations in Arizona)

If DTV dumps Tivo and Dish gets ALL locals I will consider using them again.
(I was given the name, phone number and extension and cell # for the head of service and installation)

One final note:
The last tech that hooked up my DTV did not have a work order and started boxing up my 525. I was told that Dish was going to UPS over a box for me to return it. When the tech called Dish he requested a de-install order. He never told THEM he was taking the unit. He kept saying he would call them "LATER" when the De-Install was complete. He told me it had something to do with wanting to return the unit to inventory and not having to return it to Dish. The hair on my neck stood up so I typed out a receipt for the unit and made the installer sign it before leaving. When I talked with the local Dish Pro he called up my account and said I should be receiving a box to return the receiver in a couple of days. He seemed surprised when I told him the installer took the receiver. He expressed some doubt until I said I have a signed receipt. He told me to keep it in a safe place. I have a feeling if I had not made the installer sign a receipt that I would now be on the hook for the equipment. It all just seemed a little odd...

Not that this means anything but my dog LOVES everyone. She sits in the front yard and the mailman, the neighbors, even kids going to school all pet her and she is nothing but a sweetheart. When the installer was here she put herself between myself and the installer and growled in a low deep growl that I have never heard from her. She did not stop until he was gone.
(She may have been sensing my frustrations or she may have been acting on her own instincts)

If you read the agreement papers, disconnects within 6 months require equipment return to the retailer of original sale. But if you disconnected after 6 months of activation, for example, the equipment goes to DISH. DISH CSR's are accustomed to sending boxes out regardless of when you disconnect. This has been a sore point of discussion between retailers and DISH Network as the CSR's are clueless to this important detail. It gives the cancelling customer more aggrevation to hear two diff. sides of the story. Long story short, the retailer is supposed to take the boxes and other equipment back. Just have the retailer call DISH Network to claim that they have the equipment and you'll be fine.

On the rest of the story, you have bad installers in cable, Dish, DirecTV, and even phone companies like Verizon. In this business, first-time impressions go a long way in impressing/disappointing a customer. We tend to have many referrals from our best techs while getting complaints from our beginner techs. If a company has an all-star cast of installers, great for them. But like everything in this world, there'll be someone that won't care for his work and you'll get stuck with a lemon. I'm sure at your own workplace, you have employees fitting the same bill. ;)

 whoa! Dude!! You're just opening yourself to a world of hurt if you maintain that "policy" of yours. Dish can and will fail you on a QC because of that; not to mention any insurance adjuster will have your hide. NEC states that any "antenna" must be grounded. That includes the dish as well. There are plenty of threads in this forum discussing different ways to ground or "bond" a system. But this is completely different. Bottom line...the dish has to be grounded and the lines from the dish have to be grounded.

***I won't even get into the debate of whether a switch is a suitable ground or not, too many compelling arguments on both sides of that fence*** ;)

The dish needs to be grounded? A grounding block does not suffice? The lines from the dish also need to be grounded? I guess I'll have to start doing some reading then!
webbydude
Typically, a dual-RG, with grounding tracer, cable run is made from the dish to the groundblock. One end of the run has the tracer attatched to the dish; preferably to a groundlug that is screwed into the dish mast. The other end of the run has the tracer wire attatched to your grounding block. I've always thought it was just common knowledge and practice for everyone to have a tracer attatched run from the dish to groundblock.
R
SummitAdvantageRetailer is right it states right on the contract you signed that the equipment is returned to the retailer in the first 180 days.

But you did say you when to a local retailer but Dish sent the installer? Always find a Retailer that has his own installers.

If an installer showed up to do a job at my house and had to borrow tools (Ladder) I would have thrown him off my property right then and there. That is a huge clue that he is NOT qualified to do his job.

Everyone gets the bingo channel unless your state doesn't allow it like Ohio.

Not sure saving $24/year is worth it unless you're a hardcore Philo user. I'll stick with monthly.

$24 for the Year, would be more useful.

But when you cancel you still have to watch until the plan runs out. With monthly you're done at the end of the month.

Sorry, my point was the expense.

Philo's monthly price is reasonable, IMO, because it's still the cheapest way I'm aware of to get all the linear Discovery networks AND access to the Discovery Go apps.

I grow tired of all the reboots. Most I don't bother with but will depend on the actor chosen.

Yeah, I'll check it out as well, but shan't be holding my breath...It'll be tough to equal James Garner in that role...

I can think of a few actors (including some females) who might fit the bill.

This will all depend on the storyline. I'm not sure how well it will translate. Modern TV hasn't been all that kind to PIs and even less kind to CIs (confidential informants).

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Wife and I like the AfarTV feeds, for the discussion along w/ them, though they're otherwise just mirrors of the official USGS feeds.

Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:

The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Looks like Episode 55 is over at 09:00 HST, just under six hours. The USGS said the fountains reached 720' or 220 meters.

The USGS Kīlaeua Webcam #1 has been showing overflows and doming from the North vent overnight. Maybe the volcanic plumbing has settled back into its two-three week cycle of fountaining?

But I do miss the little cinder cone that broke up in the last episode.

Sorry, I should have posted these earlier:

At 08:01 HST 11/05/2026, the North Vent produced what I would call a "wet burp" after the precursory "pistoning" events, small amounts of lava pouring out of the vent for a few seconds to minutes and then everything recedes. There must have been a gas bubble holding thing back because two minutes later the lava started flowing out of the vent in all directions. Then, at 08:25, it stopped. What a tease! I thought this was how Episode 56 started.

About 12 minutes later at 08:38, the North vent once again started overflowing and picked up steam at 08:42. By 09:00, slight doming could be seen in the pool of lava in the vent. Surely this is it!

But, 09:50 and things wind down again. By 09:57 HST there's just fumes coming out of the vent. Phooey.

But then 10:00 comes and the heavy lava flows kick in again. This time seems like the real deal. At 10:30 HST there's little spurts of lava flying up in the air over the vent, but more from gas than a steady fountain of lava. This looks promising!

11:30 HST and the color of the lava is definitely hotter, and the intensity has picked up to a definite dome and precursor to fountaining. The USGS calls Episode 56 as officially starting at 12:10 HST:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-11-05 22:29:12 UTC
HVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Kilauea (VNUM #332010)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Thursday, November 5, 2026, 12:29 PM HST
Source: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2026/H514
Location: N 19 deg 25 min W 155 deg 17 min
Elevation: 4091 ft (1247 m)
Area: Hawaii

Summary: Episode 56 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 12:10 PM HST on November 5, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 56 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 12:10 PM HST on November 5, 2026.

Lava fountain heights are relatively low at about 100 ft (30 meters), but will likely increase. Ground-level sensors near the eruptive vents indicate that winds are blowing from the northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

I could very well be wrong....it has been a LOT of years but back when I had a 722K it seemed like when you went back to the scan screen that you could just scan again and it would ADD those channels to the previous list or you could delete the previous results and only add the channels from the new scan.

I am not sure about that but I do know that you could manually add additional channels just by entering the actual RF channel number and the older receivers would add the virtual channels to your list

Like I said.....that has been many years ago. Swapped my 722K for a Hopper in 2012.

It does seem like I remember having to delete the existing channels when we did a rescan. Back then our local stations KEPT monkeying around with things and it was non-stop complaints from customers about their channels not coming in. Got so bad that I stopped selling OR installing OTAs....something I had been doing since 1984 so you know it HAD to be pretty bad.

Keep in mind that the 722 had a built in OTA tuner and the 722K had a plug in module for OTA. The Hoppers and Wallys use an add on USB OTA dongle. I believe they are entirely different.

Still hate weekly releases though, especially the way Disney and HBO do it waiting until 8pm to premiere it.

Apparently I'm not a big enough nerd🤓 since I did not read every Marvel Comic Book ever published. If I had, I might be comparing the comics' version of events compared to what's transpiring in "Visionquest". So, I am enjoying the series a lot, not weighed down by previous expectations, knowing only the Avengers MCU movies and the "Wandavision" / "Agatha All Along" TV series.

I found the Mr Know-it-All channel from his discussion about "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and he's been gleefully picking these episodes apart, referencing the Marvel comics from the 1939 on. Turns out A.I. has been around since before World War II, at least in the comics. (Robots before that, yes, yes.) This show is going back into the archives.

I thought they were effectively releasing a longer episode 7 and 8 instead of shorter episodes 7 & 8 this week and 9 & 10 next week. It felt like they were packing more into this episode.

edit: But you're right, the run time of the first three pairs of episodes was 100 minutes on average. Episode 7 clocks in at 65 minutes. 😕
