Now I remember the time when I could not watch my spongebob or see the hotties on MTV... This was because Charlie and Viacom were having their little pissing contest. And if memory serves me correctly part of it was carriage of some of the CBS stations? I have thought about this and after reading the news this morning I wonder what impact this may have regarding the split of Viacom... Does E* have to negotiate new contracts with one (or both) of the new companies?

Quote:
Viacom has moved up the date on which it plans to split in two. It said Tuesday that the split will be completed by the end of the year instead of in the first quarter of 2006. The company had previously announced that one company, which will continue to be called Viacom Inc., will be composed of the Paramount movie studios; Paramount Home Video; and the company's cable networks, including MTV, Nickelodeon, BET, and Comedy Central. It will be headed by Tom Freston. The other company, headed by Les Moonves, will be called CBS Corp. and include CBS and UPN; Paramount Television; Infinity Radio; Paramount Theme Parks, and Viacom Outdoor.

actually no... they are completely splitting Viacom into two separately traded companies... There will be no more Viacom... It will be Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp. (Although Summer Redstone AKA National Amusements will still have controlling stock of both companies)

Summer Redstone will lose the CEO title and will be Chairman of the board for both companies as he is controlling stockholder. Tom Freston (currently co-president and co-coo) will be president and CEO of Viacom... Leslie Moonvees will be President and CEO of CBS Corporation...

here is the SEC Filing: (interesting reading)

Interesting (From SEC Filing)

The Loss of Affiliation Agreements Could Cause New Viacom's Revenues to Decline in Any Given Period or in Specific Markets
New Viacom is dependent upon the maintenance of affiliation agreements with cable and DTH satellite operators for the distribution of its cable networks and there can be no assurance that these affiliation agreements will be renewed in the future on terms acceptable to New Viacom. The loss of a significant number of these arrangements or the loss of carriage on the most widely penetrated programming tiers could reduce the distribution of New Viacom's cable networks, which may adversely affect New Viacom's advertising and affiliate fee revenues. In addition, further consolidation among
cable and DTH satellite operators and increased vertical integration of such distributors into the cable or broadcast network business could adversely affect New Viacom's ability to negotiate the launch of new networks or the ability to maintain existing distribution or obtain additional distribution for existing networks. In a more concentrated market, there can be no assurance that New Viacom will be able to obtain or maintain carriage of its programming services by distributors on commercially
reasonable terms, or at all.
N
Ok I will post a couple more E* related stuff:

New Viacom's Cable Networks Are Included with CBS Corp.'s Programming Under Certain of Viacom's Affiliation Agreements and New Affiliation Agreements May Be More Difficult to Negotiate Following the Separation

Viacom is party to affiliation agreements with cable and DTH satellite operators pursuant to which both New Viacom's cable networks and CBS Corp.'s television programming are carried by these distributors. After these agreements expire, New Viacom's cable networks will no longer be included with CBS Corp.'s programming. There can therefore be no assurance that New Viacom will be able to negotiate new affiliation agreements with these distributors on terms as favorable as was previously
possible.

Another:

The Loss of Affiliation Agreements or Retransmission Agreements Could Materially Adversely Affect CBS Corp.'s Results of Operations
CBS Network and UPN provide their affiliates with up to 98 and 10 hours, respectively, of Monday through Friday programming per week. In return, CBS Network's affiliated stations and UPN's affiliated stations broadcast network-inserted commercials during that programming. Loss of network affiliation agreements of CBS Network and UPN could adversely affect CBS Corp.'s results of operations by reducing the reach of CBS Corp.'s programming and therefore its attractiveness to advertisers and renewal on less favorable terms may also adversely affect CBS Corp.'s results of operations.
The non-renewal or termination of retransmission agreements with distributors such as Comcast Corporation, Time Warner Cable, a division of Time Warner Inc., DIRECTV Holdings LLC, or EchoStar Communications Corporation, which we refer to in this Prospectus-Information Statement as 'EchoStar,'' or continued distribution on less favorable terms, could also adversely affect CBS Corp.'s ability to distribute its network programming to a nationwide audience and affect CBS Corp.'s ability to
sell advertising, which could have a material adverse effect on CBS Corp.'s results of operations. Showtime Networks is dependent upon the maintenance of affiliation agreements with cable and DTH satellite operators, and there can be no assurance that these affiliation agreements will be renewed in the future on terms acceptable to Showtime Networks. The loss of one or more of these arrangements would reduce the distribution of Showtime Networks' premium subscription television program services and reduce revenues from subscriber fees. Further, the loss of favorable packaging,
positioning, pricing or other marketing opportunities with any distributor could reduce revenues from subscriber fees.
In addition, consolidation among cable and DTH satellite operators and increased vertical integration of such distributors into the cable or broadcast network business has provided more leverage to these providers and could adversely affect CBS Corp.'s ability to maintain or obtain distribution for its network programming or distribution and/or marketing for its premium subscription program services on commercially reasonable terms, or at all.

SO... It looks like there will be no problems now... (unless Charlie gets a bug up his A$$ and thinks he can make a buck... But looks like could be in for a mess when the contract does expire...

I still tend to think that agreements for the Viacom networks (i.e. Nick, MTV, Noggin, etc.) will still be valid for the new Viacom Inc. and that if anything is affected by this change it would only be the CBS/UPN O&O stations that would be under CBS Corp. control.

Normally, a contract requires any subsequent owners to honor a valid contract unless bankruptcy proceedings are involved.

There should be no change until the expiration of the original contract, unless they had exit clauses built in due to change of ownership.

Not sure saving $24/year is worth it unless you're a hardcore Philo user. I'll stick with monthly.

$24 for the Year, would be more useful.

But when you cancel you still have to watch until the plan runs out. With monthly you're done at the end of the month.

Sorry, my point was the expense.

Philo's monthly price is reasonable, IMO, because it's still the cheapest way I'm aware of to get all the linear Discovery networks AND access to the Discovery Go apps.

'Rockford Files' Reboot Gets NBC Pilot Order

I grow tired of all the reboots. Most I don't bother with but will depend on the actor chosen.

Yeah, I'll check it out as well, but shan't be holding my breath...It'll be tough to equal James Garner in that role...

I can think of a few actors (including some females) who might fit the bill.

This will all depend on the storyline. I'm not sure how well it will translate. Modern TV hasn't been all that kind to PIs and even less kind to CIs (confidential informants).

Premier is Saturday, Jan 2nd. Moving to Thursday on the 7th.

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Wife and I like the AfarTV feeds, for the discussion along w/ them, though they're otherwise just mirrors of the official USGS feeds.

Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:

The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Looks like Episode 55 is over at 09:00 HST, just under six hours. The USGS said the fountains reached 720' or 220 meters.

The USGS Kīlaeua Webcam #1 has been showing overflows and doming from the North vent overnight. Maybe the volcanic plumbing has settled back into its two-three week cycle of fountaining?

But I do miss the little cinder cone that broke up in the last episode.

Sorry, I should have posted these earlier:

At 08:01 HST 11/05/2026, the North Vent produced what I would call a "wet burp" after the precursory "pistoning" events, small amounts of lava pouring out of the vent for a few seconds to minutes and then everything recedes. There must have been a gas bubble holding thing back because two minutes later the lava started flowing out of the vent in all directions. Then, at 08:25, it stopped. What a tease! I thought this was how Episode 56 started.

About 12 minutes later at 08:38, the North vent once again started overflowing and picked up steam at 08:42. By 09:00, slight doming could be seen in the pool of lava in the vent. Surely this is it!

But, 09:50 and things wind down again. By 09:57 HST there's just fumes coming out of the vent. Phooey.

But then 10:00 comes and the heavy lava flows kick in again. This time seems like the real deal. At 10:30 HST there's little spurts of lava flying up in the air over the vent, but more from gas than a steady fountain of lava. This looks promising!

11:30 HST and the color of the lava is definitely hotter, and the intensity has picked up to a definite dome and precursor to fountaining. The USGS calls Episode 56 as officially starting at 12:10 HST:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-11-05 22:29:12 UTC
HVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Kilauea (VNUM #332010)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Thursday, November 5, 2026, 12:29 PM HST
Source: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2026/H514
Location: N 19 deg 25 min W 155 deg 17 min
Elevation: 4091 ft (1247 m)
Area: Hawaii

Summary: Episode 56 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 12:10 PM HST on November 5, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 56 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 12:10 PM HST on November 5, 2026.

Lava fountain heights are relatively low at about 100 ft (30 meters), but will likely increase. Ground-level sensors near the eruptive vents indicate that winds are blowing from the northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

I could very well be wrong....it has been a LOT of years but back when I had a 722K it seemed like when you went back to the scan screen that you could just scan again and it would ADD those channels to the previous list or you could delete the previous results and only add the channels from the new scan.

I am not sure about that but I do know that you could manually add additional channels just by entering the actual RF channel number and the older receivers would add the virtual channels to your list

Like I said.....that has been many years ago. Swapped my 722K for a Hopper in 2012.

It does seem like I remember having to delete the existing channels when we did a rescan. Back then our local stations KEPT monkeying around with things and it was non-stop complaints from customers about their channels not coming in. Got so bad that I stopped selling OR installing OTAs....something I had been doing since 1984 so you know it HAD to be pretty bad.

You made one of my points for me with this comment, Dishstaller:

Keep in mind that the 722 had a built in OTA tuner and the 722K had a plug in module for OTA. The Hoppers and Wallys use an add on USB OTA dongle. I believe they are entirely different.

Still hate weekly releases though, especially the way Disney and HBO do it waiting until 8pm to premiere it.

Apparently I'm not a big enough nerd🤓 since I did not read every Marvel Comic Book ever published. If I had, I might be comparing the comics' version of events compared to what's transpiring in "Visionquest". So, I am enjoying the series a lot, not weighed down by previous expectations, knowing only the Avengers MCU movies and the "Wandavision" / "Agatha All Along" TV series.

I found the Mr Know-it-All channel from his discussion about "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and he's been gleefully picking these episodes apart, referencing the Marvel comics from the 1939 on. Turns out A.I. has been around since before World War II, at least in the comics. (Robots before that, yes, yes.) This show is going back into the archives.

I thought they were effectively releasing a longer episode 7 and 8 instead of shorter episodes 7 & 8 this week and 9 & 10 next week. It felt like they were packing more into this episode.

edit: But you're right, the run time of the first three pairs of episodes was 100 minutes on average. Episode 7 clocks in at 65 minutes. 😕
