Okay, I need a little help to setup my equipment. Here is what I have:

32" JVC HDTV (HDMI; Cpnt; Svid; Digaudio and 3 RCA)
Pioneer surround sound/DVD (NON progressive, only has RCA and Svid)
E* HDTV 811. (I think DVI; Svid; Cpnt; RCA; Digaudio)
Xbox (non 360)

I currently have the DVD/SS Svid going to the TV along with RCA audio, and RCA audio outs from the TC going back to the DVD/SS. Then, the copponent videos from the 811 go to the TV along with RCA audio. And the X-box going to the TV.

First, my problem is that when I use the surround sound for watching TV the center channel mutes and instead only comes out of the TV. The other four channels and bass work fine, but I'd like to use the center channel.

Second, I'm sure the sound could be better if I somehow hook up the digital audio lead from the 811 to the TV, but I'm not sure how. I believe the 811 digital audio out has a square peg while the TV digital video in has a pair of RCA style jacks.

Third, I'm not using the HDMI jack on the TV. Isn't HDMI the better method over the copponent videos? However, I would have to have a DVI - HDMI cable. Do you lose anything in quality with one of those?

Finally, I'd like to have the X-box play in HD quality, will this work if I hook the X-box to the 811? If so, do I simply change to a specific channel to play the X-Box?

Also, to add to this;

One problem is that, like I said, when I run the TV through the SS (ie. not for DVD's) the center channel does not play, but instead comes through the TV speaker.

A possible reason for this is that the TV has four inputs. 1, 2, 3 and digital (compenent plus RCA digital audio). Input one has S-video and RCA plus audio, 2 and 3 are just RCA plus audio. The TV also has the HDMI.

So, I have the 811, via components running to the digital video input and the input 1 audio. Its the only way to get sound?? If I hook the RCA audio to the digital audio inputs there is no sound. I assume because the 811's RCA audio is analog while the digital has that square peg line. If I switch to a DVI-HDMI I'll still have to use the input 1 RCA analog audio inputs.

First, is there a way to run the digital audio between the 811 and the TV or SS? Or, how should all the audio be hooked up?

Second, would it be better for any reason to run the DVD player S-video to the 811?

Not XBOX to 811? In order to have XBOX in HD quality (for those games in that format) don't I need to run it through the receiver?
Is the DVI-HDMI going to give me a better picture than using the Compenent cables for 811-TV connection? Is it a noticible difference?
I'll have to see if the SS has a digital audio input. Its a few years old so??
Also, I just last night hooked up a silver sensor OTA indoor antenna. Works rather well. I get all the channels in at between 70-80%. But, it came with standard coaxial cable. Is there a better cable I should use?

XBOX: The only way to run your XBOX through the 811 is via composite video. This will not give you HD. XBOX has a HD adaptor that will allow you to connect via component thus giving you HD with any HD capable game.

811: You will not see much of a difference between the DVI and the component outputs. They both look equally as good. Since you only have 1 component input on your TV, which will be occupied with the XBOX connection, use the DVI input for your 811.

OTA: A good quality coax cable is all you need for you antenna input on your TV.

1:The RCA audio outputs on the 811 are analog only. If you want digital audio from the 811, the only way to get there is via the digital audio output. The 811 uses the toslink connector (square peg line). If your TV or SS does not have this connector, you will not get digital audio unless you purchase a digital audio adapter.

2: S-video will always give you a better picture than composite.

My thoughts,
811 to TV via DVI-HDMI cable. You will not lose any quality.
XBOX to TV via Component. You need a XBOX component adapter.
DVD to TV via S-Video.
Does your Pioneer surround sound receiver have a digital audio input?
If it does, then you can hook up the 811 audio that way.
Hope that helps.

If I may add to this, if your Pioneer surround sound system as "Optical Digital" input then you need to go to best buy and get an "Optical" cable. It's a single cable with a single connector that uses light to transfer digital sound codes. There isn't really a way to "improve" light transfer so any level of optical cable will do. They will probably try to sell you Monster cable, and my recommendation is to get it because it is sturdier, although not much higher quality than Acoustic Research PRO. You should do this for all of your external components except for the XBOX because there is no true digital audio output on an XBOX so no need to even worry about it.

Look on the back of your surround sound receiver to see how many digital audio inputs it has. If it has two optical, you can link your dvd player and your 811 to it. if your dvd player has only coaxial digital output (shown by either black or orange connector) then check your pioneer to see if it has that input. It will say "Coaxial" and it most probably is orange. You can get the same thing at best buy. With that I highly suggest monster cable for the best quality and durability because coaxial still uses copper/silver wiring and shielding so you can get interference on the line. Monster cable is the best at breaking that down and lasts the longest. If you have more questions, I suggest looking on the back of your components, drawing diagrams of the connection ports and then going to best buy and asking the sales associate to help you find the right cables for you. Also, if you hook all the video straight to your tv and route all the audio through the receiver then you definitely need those cables. If you use HDMI-HDMI from your components to your tv only then that's all you need as it carries both audio and video.

HDMI-DVI carries only video so you would still need the audio cabling. With stereo RCA audio cables you cannot get the Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS decoding across so you will never get true surround sound. I had the same problem before I started working at best buy and I learned a lot in the three months since I've been there. With the right digital audio cabling your problems should disappear.

On a more concise note, where the "Digital RCA" connector is on your tv (or receiver), that's referring to the Coaxial Digital cable. It has the same basic connector as an RCA cable but with different wiring and shielding because it's transferring different signals. The "Square Peg" insert on the back of your 811 is for the Optical digital cable which if you do what I suggested and go to best buy or circuit city or wherever, they will get you the right cables for your system. Again, be sure all your components have matching outputs and inputs as far as digital audio is concerned, because there are no adaptors for optical-coaxial because it's not possible. You can't connect light to copper wiring. Remember to draw a diagram of the connection panel on the back of your tv and take that with you as well. Be sure to label every connection port.

To fix the center channel-being-your-tv problem, you need to make sure that all your speakers are wired correctly into the receiver and then route ALL audio through the receiver instead of through the tv! If you have a long enough RCA audio for your XBOX then you should route those into it as well. You won't get true surround sound but it will definitely sound better than it does coming just out of the tv. Most of the newer hdtvs aren't built with the speakers that the old CRT monitors had. The reason is that the industry is pushing "Home Theatre" as in- the whole experience, with surround sound systems and big screens and the whole 10 yards. So they effort and money is being spent on the picture quality and less on the audio output of a tv, because they figure people are going to want to hook up everything to surround sound anyway, which is becoming true. If all your speakers are wired correctly into the receiver and all your audio cabling is being routed to the receiver instead of the tv, that will take care of that problem.

Hope that helps.

Mexico takes on South Africa to open the World Cup Final (it is called the Final... this just isn't the World Cup Final... Final). The tournament has been plagued with rife malfeasance as FIFA has been committing all sorts of fraud with the ticket sales. Hotel rooms have gone unfilled as the prices to attend a game and stay somewhere are through the roof. I swear this is impacting Mansfield, OH hotel rates which are higher than average for the Indycar race. And there is a broadening VAR presence which will ruin things as nothing worse now when scoring a goal and knowing you can't quite celebrate yet as they check to see if a player was offside by a pixel a half-hour ago.

The Group Stage used to mean something, but now 32 of the 48... yeah, 48 teams are going to the Knockout Round. Getting into the Knockout Round used to be a big deal, even for the US. But now... if you don't lose all of your group stage games, you get to move on. Oi! And this is avoiding all the political stuff!

I have never been so unexcited for a World Cup before. Every game used to matter. But FIFA be darned if they don't try to squeeze out every dime they can out of the players, refs, and fans.

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Comcast Corporation, one of the largest telecommunications and media conglomerates in the United States, has shed more than 13 million pay-TV subscribers since reaching its zenith in the late 2000s. The company's video subscriber base, which includes traditional cable television services, stood at approximately 24.2 million customers toward the end of 2008. By the close of the first quarter of 2026, that figure had plummeted to roughly10.95 million, representing a loss of about 13.25 million subscribers, or more than half of its historical peak.

The average monthly cost of cable television in the United States has climbed to $147, marking a significant increase that reflects broader trends in media consumption and rising operational expenses for providers. This figure represents the baseline expense for standard television packages across major cable operators, excluding additional fees for premium channels, equipment rentals, or taxes that often push household bills even higher.

This is without Broadband services ( bundled), also, paying a lot more for a lot less new scripted content and now….sports.

Anyone know how Canadians are doing with cord cutting? I would think there could be added incentive simply in that Canadian cable/sat has been heavily regulated to exclude much of US content in order to promote home content. Streaming would seem to cut through any of that, presuming there aren't restrictions on that as well. Or maybe US streamers won't sell there?

Some of the most popular streaming apps, like YTTV, Netflix, Hulu, and others, are geo locked to at least one country, if not even tighter. There are ways around that for the technically inclined.

I watched some of the OKC Texas game on dvr this afternoon while visiting my mom. I had set it to record the season for her, but she has trouble with using the dvr and barely can use the live guide. Usually softball is the first suggestion YTTV puts up when she clicks the tile though, so it works well enough for her.

Wasn't there a law passed a long time back mandating service providers level the sound from one ch. to the next? Or was that just for within any single given ch., and not letting commercials be boosted? Regardless it's a pain on DiSH with some ch's way louder than others, and having to jockey the sound up & down. Is there some fix? Can some TVs compensate for this?

depend on how you tv and box is setup? as both have "audio" leveling

for me if I have audio leveling on hopper enabled DD is lower then Stereo if i turn off on h3 turn on tv it the reverse. Almost ALL streaming channels much lower volume level then statalite channels.

Either way one my pet peaves is that even channel seem to have it own "audio level" and so to commericals and none of the actual audio leveling functions actual fix this and never have. would be nice if every channel dish/dtv/fios etc all made volume level defualt to same dB so atlest all channel where consistent volume probably wont help commercials though.

To my knowledge no TV has ever had audio leveling function that actual fixed that all it really does it either lower or raise the volume

Most stuff has all this volume leveling, almost all them dont work the way should or advertised as. maybe "ai" versions of volume level will work closer to way we would like to which make all channels and inputs same defualt sound level, including commercials

There is reason my entire mp3/audio music collection on my pc was changed to have same defualt "dB" for all files via something like MP3Gain so there all same defualt volume level and there for I never have to play around with my volume. I know Winamp could change dB defualts but never worked as good as just manual changing all the audio/mp3/music collection files to just be all the same

But doesn't music require a lot of dynamic range? At least classical & the like? So there has to be allowance for some highs without attenuation, and some lows without boosting. It seems there needs to be some kind of a universal median level that all sources can register to, that still allows for both soft and loud intermittently. My dad always had westerns on and the gunshots really rang out

That's a fundamental issue with volume levels - it's not just that people want some "level" but that the material itself can demand (or at least so says the creator) a wide dynamic range or a smaller one. ie: do you boost the typical conversations upward and use most of your range just for voices? Or do you leave room for the explosions and jet engines. Creators and viewer/listeners all vary in their priorities, and most volume-leveling products are trying to do things in real time so they have very little context to work with. Even when using a tool that reads a whole file and displays a peak volume, you can wonder how often such a volume occurs and then you can disagree on how important it is for something like an explosion to have any clipping/distortion.

I think the OP refers to the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, AKA the CALM act. But as the name suggests, I think it only has to do with commercials and not different sources.

By the way, if you watch westerns with realistic gunshot sound levels, I recommend hearing protection. :)
T
I will say this on PC it worse one game is one volume level by defualt another is super quiet and another deafening loud, and volume leveling dont equalize it. The dynamic range isnt the problem the defualt volume is not same from channel to channel, commercial to commercial game to game.

To mean volume leveling is defeat volume level from source to source channel to channel, commercial to commercial, game to game.

Default volume level of 89.9 dB across the board fixes that tv providers can easily do this from there end and mandate commercial creators follow it, but it wont ever happen

Maybe volume leveling means somthing else to other people

This only if anything seems to be worsening on DiSH. Ch. 215 is a prime example. It's typically much louder than other ch's, and today I notice it even contradicting itself, shifting drastically up and down inexplicably over periods of several minutes. Oddly, the quietest periods have come during commercials...

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

I asked again, and the rep I talked to said it is a glitch and that "Access for TV" shouldn't be there - the rep pulled up my future month bills and that charge isn't on it. So I am not going to worry about it right now, but it will be interesting to see when the price changes happen later this year. Will this line item show up? The fact that it is a specific item that is different from anything makes me think it is more than a glitch. But we shall see.

I am hoping they don't add this down the road. Things are expensive the way it is now. Even DIRECTV allows the first receiver free. This would go against DISH and DISH is already loosing subscribers I wouldn't think they would do these kind of tricks but you never know. Always look at your bills for unknow charges. I heard horror stories of people getting charged for things they didn't know were there.

I feel like this was discussed in another thread, but I can't find it. I have T-Mobile and my last iPhone upgrade was in 2020. I want to get a new iPhone, but what is the best way to go about doing it? Should I order the iPhone from T-Mobile directly, or should I buy from the Apple Store? I feel like there are pros/cons to each option.

Hello everyone, new guy here. I'm trying to solve problem I'm having with Dish bonus view channels. When I'm watching the bonus view channels then I switch back to regular dish channels, after few minutes the screen flips to black and after 30 seconds flips back to regular channels and continues to flip back and forth until I turn off TV. After I wait 30 minutes and turn back on , I can use regular channels again. So, its after I switch from bonus view channels to regular dish channels the problem starts. Been trying to fix this for a month, but no luck
Here what I've done.
i contacted Dish support and they sent me a new Joey3, but no help. Switched to a different HDMI input on TV, no help. Used different HDMI cable , no help. Used different electrical wall plug, no help.
Finally got a Dish tech to check it. He ran all systems check and was OK. Finally he brought in a small TV and plugged in the HDMI out from the Joey to the small TV. He could not get the problem to occur on his small TV, so the new Joey was working OK. So, then the problem must be myTV. He made some phone calls and came back with the answer that there must be a problem with the analog to digital switch in my TV. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, or is it time to be looking for a new TV? My tv LG OLED65C8PUA. TV has been trouble free til now. Thanks

First off, great TV. I'm torn between the 77C5 or the 77G5.
It sounds like the handshake between the Receiver and the TV is having a problem. Are you using the free cable that came with the Joey or a higher speed HDMI cable?? That's the f irst place I'd look

First off, The analog to digital switch, also known as the digital television transition, is the process of converting older analog television broadcasting technology to digital broadcasting. It's used through coaxial cable for the an antenna during the mandatory switch from Analog to Digital on June 12, 2009. You either had to get a converter for your analog (Tube TV) or use a converter box that has the analog or digital tuner or an HDTV which your is and has the tuner built in. Your TV is HD and using an HDMI Cable and nothing is connected by coaxial cable so this wouldn't apply.

In my theory it probably means a new TV. I had a TV go out on my switching between the Smart Screen from the HDMI inputs before because they went faulty. Sometimes electrical surges can cause this. If you have an older home or rent an older home or apartment sometimes the electrical outlets are not grounded and these days HDTV's need a ground which can cause them to malfunction and go bad quicker. Never plug it directly in an outlet. It will damage the TV.

Hope I could be of some assistance.
