I hopefully will be getting HD through Directv's customer retention program in the very near future (if wife is understanding and lets me, *crossing fingers*) but in the mean time I am experiencing a problem with my picture quality. It is sad, but I have to admit that now my local channels being received through cable, have a better quality than those from the satellite. I have noticed a difference for at least a few weeks now and was curious if any viewer who is better technically adept than myself had any suggestions. My RCA receiver is a couple of years old and is just your standard non-HD receiver. The picture quality has the appearance of looking grainy or what I call pixelated. Skin tones definately show this as well as pictures of the sky and water. Not all channels show this but a high majority do. Sometimes, the commercials look better in picture quality than the actual show. I have checked all my connections and they are tight and did not find any kinks or knicks in my cable line. I live in the midwest so snow, ice and rain are common in the winter so I wonder if the weather has "weathered" my dish causing the problem. If anyone has any thoughts on the possible problem let me know. Thanks in advance for your posts.

Come on guys this is a digital signal. You either have it or you don't. You can not degrade the quality of a digital signal. If you are receiving a signal from the satellite and it is staying locked then that is all you can do. You can not improve that signal like you can an analog transmission. This is compression pure and simple....

Wrong! James S.
Although the picture may be just as good with a 70 signal strength as with a 96 signal strength on a clear day, the signal IS degraded. Where it would take a heavy rain storm to lose the signal at 96, it would only take a cloudy day to lose it at 70.

However, I don't believe that's the problem. If he's getting a good signal strength, but his picture is pixellating, then I believe his external connectors and cable is corroded to the point that the cable is no longer properly passing low voltage to the LNB.

tell me more about this D* $99 HD 'customer retention' special?!

I'm having the same problem on a new install. My Xponder's all are +90ish. DTV is sending me a new reciever to see if that is the problem. It has to be one of the following:

1. Bad reciever
2. Bad COAX run (Installer did not run new cables, used the ones there allready)
3. DTV Signal is overcompressed (If this is the case then I am just stuck).

Door Number 3 folks. I have DTV and Voom, as an example 613 Fox Sports World looks much better on Voom. Less compression, which results in less pixel movement on the green surface of soccer pitches. But Voom channel line up is very shallow.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)
