For those who may have followed the Suitsat posts here in the past, I thought I'd copy this over from the BB:

All,

SuitSat-1/Radioskaf/AO-54---the mission that has captured the imagination of
people and students around the world---is now a confirmed silent key. The
outreach, press requests and visibility of SuitSat was absolutely amazing and
appears to be unprecedented for a ham radio event. While the press requests are
just now starting to wane, we expect that you will continue to see SuitSat
status reports and pictures in magazines, websites and other literature over the
next few months. One metric which shows the interest---we had over 9 MILLION
hits at the www.suitsat.org web site. Quite impressive indeed!!

Based on the reports we have received, the last confirmed reception of the
SuitSat voice audio was on Saturday February 18 at 3:32 UTC by Bob King's
station, VE6BLD in Canada. The last confirmed telemetry was received by Richard
Crow's station, N2SPI in the USA. Richard copied the SuitSat-1 voltage dropping
precipitously to a low of 18.3 volts before vehicle stopped transmitting. I
have included Richard's compiled telemetry document at the end of this e-mail.
SuitSat-1 operated for over two weeks---much longer than the 4-9 day initial
predictions.

Despite its much lower than expected signal strength, SuitSat-1 was heard by ham
radio operators and school students around the world. SuitSat's low signal
strength required antennas with some gain. Many, including me, heard SuitSat
with a 3 element Arrow antenna attached to a handheld radio. Another challenge
to signal reception were the very deep fades due to the Suit rotation. One
great positive that came from these issues is that it challenged the ham radio
community, worldwide, to improve their station receive capabilities so that they
could pull every bit of signal from SuitSat.

"Virtual Reception"

"Virtual reception" of the student messages, SSTV image and telemetry was made
possible through SuitSat web sites and blogs that stored MP3 files from key ham
radio stations around the world. The SuitSat team thanks these system
administrators as well as our international ham radio "detectives" that worked
around the clock to receive the SuitSat signals and compile the telemetry.

Some of the key websites that were instrumental in this mission included the
www.suitsat.org website sponsored by Steve Dimse, K4HG,
http://www.aj3u.com/blog/ sponsored by A.J. Farmer, AJ3U, and
http://pd0rkc.ontwikkel.nl/ sponsored by Cor. In addition, bulletins sent by
Miles, WF1F, the AMSAT news/web page team---Emily, N1DID, JoAnne, WB9JEJ and
many others around the world kept all of us informed while SuitSat operations
unfolded. As a result of these efforts and the efforts of our ham radio
detectives, teams have identified the "secret words", the messages from students
and Mr. Alexandrov, the SSTV image and the telemtry.

SuitSat Myths Debunked

There were reports that the Suit was non-operational and that the battery was
frozen shortly after deployment. This NEVER occurred. As the telemetry has
shown, temperatures within the Suit were a somewhat comfortable 12-16C during
the entire mission. So the "frozen battery" myth is just that--a myth.

So is the early demise and resurrection of the SuitSat. It was alive and
operated flawlessly, except the signal strength issue, from the time the crew
flipped the switches until the battery power was used up.

Another potential myth is the statement that the radio output is 1-10 mW. More
precisely, the SIGNAL STRENGTH is much lower than expected. It is entirely
possible that the radio output could have been at 500 mW and the feedline,
connector or the antenna caused the problem.

SuitSat Signal Strength Issue Investigation

The SuitSat team is just starting to look at the potential causes of the vehicle
low signal strength. As described above, the cause was either an issue with the
antenna, feedline, connectors, power amplifier of the radio, or some combination
of the above. As we conduct this investigation and start to learn information
on the potential cause, we will provide public releases on this.

SuitSat Educational Outreach

As was mentioned, many schools around the world have participated in SuitSat
operations. One example of this is the R. Tait McKenzie Public School in
Almonte, Ontario. Neil Carleton, VE3NCE, sent us this message: "Thank you to
the SuitSat team for the opportunity to have students involved in such an
exciting space project. It's been a week of adventure, and I'm happy to report
on the involvement of my class as part of our grade 6 science studies of space."

The ARISS team also plans to harvest the substantial SuitSat downlinks obtained
by the ham radio community to develop lesson plans for schools. One great idea
is to use the audio with the spin fades as well as the EVA release video to let
students determine whether the spin rate slows down, speeds up or remains the
same during the mission---a simple physics experiment using ham radio! We have
many other lesson plan ideas too.

SuitSat Orbit Life

Prior to the SuitSat deployment, we received an orbit analysis which predicted a
70-120 day orbital life for SuitSat. This would put SuitSat deorbit around
mid-April to early June. The orbit life, of course, is dependent on the
atmospheric drag that the satellite experiences. More details will be provided
as de-orbit approaches.

SuitSat Additional Object

An extra object has been observed to have detached from SuitSat and become its
own satellite. This object is most likely one of the SuitSat gloves or the
Student CD which was attached on the outside of the Suit.

SuitSat Visual Passes

There has been at least one visual of SuitSat. You can see that on A.J.
Farmer's blog. Let us know if you see SuitSat. I would expect you will need
binoculars to see it.

SuitSat Accomplishment Summary

While the transmission part of the SuitSat experiment was not stellar, SuitSat-1
has been tremendously successful in several areas. Some of these successes
include:

-We captured the imagination of students and the general public worldwide
through this unique experiment
-The media attention to the SuitSat project was tremendous
-We have had well over 9 million internet hits on www.suitsat.org web site
-Our student's creative artwork, signatures and voices have been carried in
space and are on-board the spacesuit---the students are now space travelers in
the Suit as it circles the Earth. This was a collaboration with the NASA
Explorer Schools.
-The ARISS international team was able to fabricate, test and deliver a safe ham
radio system to the ISS team 3 weeks after the international space agencies
agreed to allow SuitSat to happen. This was a tremendous feat in of itself.

and most importantly,
-We successfully deployed an amateur radio satellite in a Spacesuit from the
ISS, demonstrating to the space agencies that this can be safely done.

The above engineering accomplishment will open new opportunities for small, low
cost satellites in the future.

Special Certificate/Diploma

If you heard SuitSat, don't forget the special SuitSat certificate/diploma.
Information on obtaining this certificate/diploma can be found on the AMSAT web
site: www.amsat.org

The Future

The AMSAT/ARISS team have been talking about a SuitSat-2. Correcting the signal
strength issue would be a top priority for this flight. So would be a
longer-term power generation device, like solar arrays. As our thoughts mature
on this, we will keep you informed of our plans.

SuitSat-1/Radioskaf/AO-54 represented a space pioneering effort. While we did
not have total success, we captured the imagination of students and the general
public worldwide. And we have learned a lot from this activity. This will help
us and others grow from this experience.

On behalf of the AMSAT, ARISS and SuitSat teams, I thank you all for your help,
encouragement and advice.

73, Frank H. Bauer, KA3HDO
AMSAT-VP for Human Spaceflight Programs
ARISS International Chairman

That's one of those songs that hits a little too close to home for me. I like the song but just can't listen to it. It's kinda like that song "Daddy never was the Cadillac kind".....reminds me too much of my Grandfather who died Feb 18, 1995.

LOL. It depends if the person saw it during the years when they were actually still available which is 1968 to 1983 meaning the person could be 43-58 years old or they can even be a few years old if they learned to read and write at a young age and actually saw a telephone with that label somewhere recently just like even here in San Francisco, payphone still exist physically in public places but whether they can be used or not is a different issue. I opened my Radio Shack in Sept 1984 and right about that time they did the whole deregulation thing with the phone companies. I bought TONS of those phones that had been refurbished with a new outer shell. You could throw one of those out of a 3 story high window and it would still work.
That was an interesting time in history. I would have older customers come in and ask about phones.....they were terrified that they were going to get into trouble hooking up a second phone without the phone company knowing about it. One of the funniest episodes of WKRP was the one where Johnny thought the cops were showing up because they had an unregistered phone. I guess younger folks can't conceive of a time when you were limited to the number of phones you could have in your house....and limited to the length of the cord 🤣

Speaking about cords, I actually did drop a Trimline phone from probably 3 feet high on the floor when I was about 10 or so and it caused a small crack, this was the one with the modular jacks and it was hooked up with I think a 50 ft or longer RJ11C cable from Radio Shack. I still use the phone today connected to a Obi VoIP adapter and the cord is my custom made 6 position RJ11C, not sure of the official name for it without looking it up and Belden MediaTwist Crescent shaped Cat6+ cable.

When walmart set a price...they weigh the container and the product...the product label only shows the weight of the product...I am sure if you brought your own plastic baggies to bring the product home you could get the cheaper price

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

Obviously you didn't read my post.....google says a coffee bag weighs half an ounce. But let's say you are correct and it DOES weigh a full ounce, that would still fall 5 ounces shy for Walmart's numbers to match.

League Pass tonight for example (it is almost a full slate tonight):
Hawks @ Magic (only Hawks feed which is easy to insert since its OTA this season and simulcast across multiple Gray Television markets, Magic signed a non- exclusive streaming deal with DAZN and also OTA)
Bucks @ Wizards (only Wizards feed easy to remap, Bucks are OTA & there own streaming service Bucks+)
Hornets @ Nets (only Nets feed which DirecTV already carries so simply YES remap, Hornets signed non-exclusive streaming deal with DAZN, also OTA)
Bulls @ Raptors (Bulls only feed via CHSN remap, its common that we don't get Raptors feeds that often)
Jazz @ Grizzlies (Jazz only feed OTA easy to insert, Grizzlies signed streaming deal with DAZN)
Pacers @ Pelicans (Pelicans only feed which is OTA easy to insert, Pacers signed streaming deal with DAZN)

Maybe it will change but it looks like DirecTV may only carry DAZN feeds on NBA LP when there is no other option, such as when two teams (either Cavaliers, Pacers, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Spurs) that are both DAZN exclusive are playing each other, we shall see as the season goes on I guess.

This NBA season will be the first in a long time where many League Pass games are carried on feeds DirecTV doesn't normally carry or are only available through OTA spot beams. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, especially whether we eventually get both home and away feeds for these teams out of market again.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

I tried this with both the Hurricanes and Hornets since I'm in upstate SC, and wasn't offered any kind of credit by the site. It's not a huge deal to me as I can pick up WSOC/WAXN over the air at my location even though I'm outside the Charlotte market.

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

My 26 year old son doesn't want to use traditional sat or cable now and only uses streaming apps and he is not on them as much as we were with satellite, using it for back ground noise while we do other things around the house. He doesn't even care about antenna ota TV either. Mind you he had a satellite receiver in his room since he was born and didn't want one after he got to be a teenager. So I took it out. I mainly used it to load up kid shows on the Dvr , so he would be entertained while I was doing stuff around the house when he was a baby and toddler. So Gen Z will not care one bit about live TV services going the way of the Dodo bird.

Some interesting information was in this article-

This first-

The total pay-TV sector (traditional service providers and virtual MVPDs) shed 885,000 subscribers in Q2 2026

So with the loss of 2.03 Million in the first quarter, already at 2.915 Million gone this year, two quarters left to report.

#2-

The segment ended Q2 with 61.51 million subs comprising 27.5 million cable video subs, 21.42 million vMVPD customers, 9.56 million satellite TV customers, and 3.01 million telco TV subs.

There are approximately 133.97 million households in the United States, according to recent YCharts US Households Data from mid-2026.

That means more than 72 Million households do not have a paid live TV service, about 54% of the total.

What is worse, 7 years ago, paid live TV had over 80% of the population subscribing ( about 100 Million), almost all were Cable/Satellite customers.

Today, only about 37 Million subscribe to Cable/Satellite, less than 28% of our population.

#3-

At one time, Satellite TV (Dish and DirecTV), had about 34 Million subscribers added together, now, 9.56 Million.

That is over a 70% loss for those who subscribe to Satellite TV.

For Cable TV, not as bad, since they have broadband to help against the losses ( bundles), but as more options appear ( 5G, fiber, starlink, etc), I expect a big increase in those leaving cable.

Also expect YTTV to really start gaining even more subscribers, for those who still wish to have a live TV service, based on price point and it is a really great service.
Bruce
Looks like Optimum Communications ( formerly CableVision) is collapsing, due to it's high debt, lenders/creditors are taking over-

Bruce
Sony is discontinuing it's last 4K disc player, Panasonic has been rumored to be doing the same, the end of physical media is unfortunately, about to happen.
