My install experience - TERRIBLE

I just got a 622 installed today, and I love it. I posted my review on the Review thread: http://www.satelliteguys.us/showthread.php?p=508410#post508410

If only the install would've been a better experience...

Was originally scheduled for 3/12, Noon - 5. They called Wednesday and asked if they could come 3/11 Noon - 5... great I say! They call about Noon and tell me they'll be there around 1:30, which they were... good! This was a private outfit, not DNSC.

They did a good job of hiding the Dish 1000 so it wasn't noticable from the street. I showed them exactly where I wanted it so that's no surprise. They did a decent job of hiding the cable so it didn't stick out badly.

One of the guys threw down a lit cigarette onto dead leaves. We have a moderate risk of runaway fires in my neighborhood due to lots of trees and leaves on the ground. I probably would not have any noticed this if other problems hadn't happened, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. The guy that installed my WildBlue system packed out his cigarette butts - a small but impressive thing that shows you care.

One guy peaked the 1000 while the other worked inside. I had it all set up for them inside, so that job was a breeze. Activation took 2 phone calls, but didn't take long.

No drip loops anywhere. Not by the dish, not by the ground block, not by the house entrance. I'm not sure if I should be worried about this or not.

At first TV2 had a really snowy picture and no sound. He spent 15 minutes working on it, till his partner realized he was 1 channel too high.

Neither of them could get remote 2 to work with my Zenith TV. After they left, it took me 2 minutes from the time I opened the instruction manual till I had it successfully programmed. No kidding on the 2 minutes - I was watching the clock because I was in a rush and that's what it really took.

The "orientation on operation of equipment" portion of the install consisted of "you got any questions?". Uh, no - I'll take it from here thanks.

Here's the big screw-up, which is partially my fault for not checking before they left... None of the channels on 110 would come up. Go into point dish, guess what - signal of 30 for 110, constantly dropping to 0. Call Dish Network Tech Support, nice guy there tries some things, then says the installers need to come back. He calls them and says they'll be calling me to come back tonight. This is about 5:30. I figured these guys were at the bar by 5:30, so I went up on the roof and fiddled around with it and I was able to get 110 up to 50, which is enough for lock. Good thing I didn't wait - it's 12:45 AM right now and they still haven't called. Right now I have 110 @ 50 sig strenghth, 119 @ 93, and 129 @ 68. This needs work, as I'm sure the first cloudy day will wipe out 110. I think I'll find a good helper, get out some walkie talkies, and finish peaking it myself.

I know this sounds like a rant on how bad the install was, but I know that mistakes are made that you can't expect everyone to be perfect. I make plenty of mistakes in my job, but I try to learn from them. My intent in posting this is so others can learn about some areas to watch for when they get installs, especially those totally new to DBS like me. I guess my problem is that I am a perfectionist, and I wish Dish would've just sent me the equipment with the 622 that came Monday and let me do it all myself. I would've been happier since I'm so picky, they would've been happier cause they wouldn't have to deal with me, and I would've had it done sooner. I've ended up doing half of it anyway, so why not cut out the middle-man for those who want to do it themselves? I just didn't get the feel they were really trying very hard.

I've searched the board for some tips to dial in the 1000, but would welcome any specific feedback based on the strengths I'm seeing. I might call my WildBlue installer to see if he can come peak my E* dish.

Thank you so much everyone for all of the terrific information!

As I was going through all this to get the thing working, I have been back & forth with the original installer to come back out. Even though I had dialed it in, I was insisting they come back to max out the peak and re-run the cable to include drip loops. So, he was supposed to come at 4PM. Not between 4 and something - 4PM. No problem, my wife can skip what she was going to do and be home after work to wait. I tell him that the Dish is now working, but I would like to have him hook up his meter and see if he can max it out. I also told him I wanted the drip loops at the dish and at the house entrance. He said those are only needed if water was running into the Dish arm. I said that is WAS running into the Dish arm. I felt like adding "Where the hell was it supposed to run when the wire comes out the top of the mast and does a big circle right into the damn arm?!" I'm not that big a prick though, so I just said that it needed to be added and I'd like it done. He said he would do it.

Well, 4PM comes and goes. I'm at work and in meetings so I'm assuming it's under control. I get a call at 4:55 that I can't answer (In a meeting) telling me he is running late. I get the voicemail, call him back 20 mins later and of course get his voicemail. Would've been nice if he could've called when he knew he was going to be late, instead of 55 minutes after he was supposed to be there. I call my wife and tell her that he may not be coming. She gets real pissed because not only was she waiting around, she's had to deal with reception problems the past few days, and also me screwing around trying to get the thing working, and listening to me bitch about it. She calls Dish directly and complains, gets a nice guy from Tech Support. He tries to call the office of the contractor, and he gets a phone disconnected message. He confirmed the number with my wife and his matched what we have on the contract. Great, the place is probably out of business. He then schedules a Field Manager for Saturday 8-12. After all this (45 mins or so), the installer calls me back to ask if I still want him to come out, that it was totally OK if I wanted to reschedule for another day. It was like he was wanting me to put it off for another day. No way were we blocking off another 2-4 hours to sit and wait for him to not come. I tell him that my wife was upset about all the problems, and called Dish, and they were sending out the manager. I told him that since we've had so many problems with this install, he didn't need to worry about coming back. He just said, "OK, I'll inform the office". No apology, no questions about what he could do to make it right, nothing. Just didn't care. He was probably happy he was done for the day.

Well, the field manager better get it right. If not, there will probably be another 622 back in circulation because my wife is on the war path.
W
Hey Kelton...... hopefully Dish will send a field manager and this will be all noted and taken care of Saturday...... Other then that... I commend you for hanging in there...... sorry about the pissed off wife though.

This is NOT a rant....You have a sh!tty install and that's all there's to it....these guys should be flogged at dawn in the town square for not using drip loops..The 30 sig on the 110 is completely inexcusable..The tech should have tweaked the dishunitl he got the best signal no matter how long it took..That is part of the job and what they get paid for..DO NOT touch thr equipment..Call dish and tell them the problens and make sure you request a field service manager(every contractor has tro havea qualified FSM on staff) come to look at and fix the job..It is wrong and the techs that did it should not be paid for poor work....What you are describing are NOT mistakes..they are examples of pure laziness..It takes very little time ot put in drip loops and peak the dish properly...You are paying for service and your not getting your money's worth..There is only one type of install..The perfect install. No other is acceptable...that's the waty I do my work..There is no in between or so so work..It's either 100% or 0 %..I drive myself to provide the best service of my ability.. I expect everyone else to do the same..When i see crappy work on the part of other techs i want to track them down, take their tools away from them and let them know that fast food joints are hiring all the time..Techs that take pride in our work get screwed by techs that do sh!tty work..It makes us look bad.

There should be more tech like you and then this forum will be very quiet. nothing to complain about. I must admit that the tech that came to my house was very good though. He seesm to know what he was doing and didn't take him long to finish the job.

Both Direct and Dish are doing this to themselves, They tell you they care about you and the quality of work, but they dont. They make their money in QUANTITY of installs, NOT Quality.

If they did care, you wouldnt see all these beat up pickups and little station wagons with step ladders bungied to their roofs and magnetic stick ons their doors reading "Satellite Installer"

Myself and my company NEVER do any sub par install and most installers around here seem to take the same pride in their work too, problem is, we are all a dying bunch who are being pushed out, WHY? Our suppliers raise pricing yearly, while the satellite companys lower the install pay AND raise what they expect to be done for free.

So while its unfortunate that the consumer pays for it in the end, the companys themselves have nobody to blame but who they see in the mirror. :down

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

They don't care... they're milkin' the cow. Buddying up with Elon to provide him an MVNO network will make their investors and shareholders salivate. All of their recent marketing efforts have failed, so this move makes a lot of sense.

Given that Tubi is one of the hottest FAST services out there, I don't expect it to go anywhere. Building up intolerance for ads takes a while, and as long as the advertisers are willing to foot the bill, why not?

You know of any drawbacks using Ultra and Prime?

Prime seems to have a problem passing the DV/HDR metadata to Roku and Apple devices, but no problem with their Fire devices.

Had a customer come in a couple weeks ago to pay her internet bill. She let me know in no uncertain terms that she did NOT appreciate me running the same ads over and over. I looked at her and waited for her to laugh and say she was just joking.......still waiting for that laugh.

There is one there too. I would think either is justifiable as they make both the device and provide a streaming program service.

I agree to a point. The transfer policy is creating parity, but only for the top 20-25 teams. The other 110+ teams in the FBS are just breeding grounds for the bigger schools which have more money and more recruiting appeal.

If a smaller school recruits, trains, and matures a quality player, they can't keep them past their sophomore year because the bigger schools snatch them up. Example: LSU didn't cultivate Sam Leavitt, they just harvested him from other schools. LSU is a top contender, in large part because of Leavitt. Michigan State and Arizona State.................are not. If either of those schools had been able to retain his services, who knows where they would be now.

Coach says afternoon game result of SEC "conspiracy". The rivalry game vs. Ala. will kick off in the afternoon at Baton Rouge rather than at night, which head coach Lane Kiffin says is intentional in order to neutralize fan craziness and noise, which is believed to help lead to wins for squads playing at home. "Obviously the SEC wanted to change this year from how it had been to give LSU less advantage, (considering) how well LSU plays at night and how intimidating it is to play here. So I guess when I look at it that way, I'm not surprised."

But he's come up with an ingenious solution. "Go to bed earlier Fri. night, then start your day earlier. Have breakfast earlier. Start drinking earlier. Whatever your routine is, just move it up."

Meantime ads have been running for a "Protect College Sports Act" moving through Congress.

Optimum, which bought up our previous cable company, Suddenlink (originally COX), replac ed all of their coax disdribution with Fiber several years ago. They ran new fiber links to the house, but installed RFOG (RF over glass) devices on the outside of the house, which makes the house coax system look like a cable system. They used DOCSIS modems and of course we had the same assymetric bandwidth of cable internet. When I called them a couple years ago, and said I had installed a connection to the local Fiber provideer, MetroNet, They panicked and offered me the 300 MBit "Fiber powered" cable service for $20 per month. They were bleeding customers. I cancelled my Metronet and went with the $20 deal for a year, even though I didn't like the old cable technology.

Then T-moble Fiber struck a deal with Metronet Fiber where T-mobile would take over the marketing, billing and customer relations for residential Customers. They offered a "Founders Deal" for 2 Gigabit service, symmetric speeds, for $70 per month for new customers. That included all taxes and fees and was guaranteed for 10 years. I couldn't resist. That deal is no longer offered, but I am set for 9 more years.

Now the successor to the old local telephone company, Brightspeed has also installed a modern Fiber system in the neighborhood, but won't be getting my business. But their Fiber technology is also superior to Optimums cable based system.

With Fiber competition, the cable companies are eventually doomed.

similar situation. almost every neighborhood around me has fiber, but our 3 block area. I called AT&T and was like, how hard is it to bring fiber over about 200 feet (I am closest to the folks with fiber and can see it on the poles from my front door); crickets and very frustrating.

After a strange reboot last night in the middle of viewing, this morning several more reboots and about a half an hour download.

Just did the update check manually about an hour ago with Hopper 3 on H713 and Hopper Plus on P15403.
Noticed something new when I clicked on the Update Software, it presented a pop-up as follows:
"Update software 1573
Update later Update now Cancel" with those three buttons which did not exist before.

After updating the H715 - I guess there must be major bugs as both H709 and H714 were skipped.

So here are the issue(s):

Issue #1
It did fix the problem with H713 which was:
"One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software."

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency so H711 and H712 were working without that dependency but H713 brought it back which is fixed in H715 as no P versions or Android TV versions are shown in the Available Joey Software on the main Diagnostics screen.
However, with that said, the TECHNICIAN SETTINGS, Download ATV (Android TV) Files is not working correctly as the Download ATV Files shows:
"Download ATV Files 3000
Download in progress. This operation will be
complete when the files are downloaded

Joey 4 : P554- Failed
Joey 4 : P55403- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P654- Failed
Wireless Joey 4 : P65403- Complete
HopperPlus : P154- Complete
HopperPlus : P15403- Failed

OK"
From what I can tell, each of them goes through the Downloading followed by the Processing stages first before it goes into the Failed or Complete stage. It seemed to be going in a loop earlier as it will start downloading from the first item being the Joey 4 each time before it eventually stopped. This is the first time ever since 2023 that I had ever seen it Failed.

With that said, the dependency appears to still be required for the Hopper Plus to check, download and update the Android TV software as it says Failed, No Target when going to "Device Preferences", About, "Software Update"

Issue #2
Still cannot cast to Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus(Software P15317) with the Hopper Plus "Google Chromecast Built-In" feature" as it shows up as a casting device when the Hopper Plus is online and disappears when the Hopper 3 and Hopper Plus does it's nightly reboots but times out when one tries to cast to it and always shows up as Not available in the Google Home app on Android phone. No one else anywhere on the internet had confirmed whether it is working for them or not. Per brittanygarden in DM on October 16, 2026:
"We've been working with Google on this. We have a fix on the Google side projected for Q4. I know we're in Q4 now, but I will try to get a narrowed down timeline for you."

brittanygarden and Rick Durham

jsmit86 and naptime - If you are able to use H715, does the issue mentioned below still exist?
