Glossary: WAF - Acronym, Wife Accptance Factor: An oft overlooked facet of any home electronics purchase; a husband must make careful consideration of the ramifications of any changes to the status quo. Ignore this at your peril. No, I'm not puzzy whipped, just realistic.

Now the story/details:

My Dishplayer is going to be going bye-bye (i.e. Ebay) as soon as the DVR 522 is available for purchase. I am also going to sell my 5000 reciever (Ebay). At the same time locals are going to become available for the city that is closest to me.

A few months ago I got a Dish 500 antenna for the first time (when Dish moved the Dishplayer guide source to the 110 bird) and with that I decided to upgrade from AT100 to AT150 and I've been pretty happy with that change.

I am still paying the $9.99/mo. PVR fee for the DP and I will be glad to ditch that. The PVR fee for the 522 with the AT150 is no problem as I will have a net gain... considering I will also be dropping the 2nd receiver, so I'll be +$10 to the better each month in fees.

I am a very old Dish customer and have had west-coast networks for a long, long time. I even have a model 2000 receiver (you know, the one that came over on the Mayflower) that just got shut off about 6 months ago.

Now my dilema: My wife yearns for a 'simpler' setup, one in which she doesn't have to do trick gyrations with the VCR and TV to be able to view locals. All is OK when she wants to watch satellite, but when she wants to watch locals (via the OTA antenna) she gets all wigged out with the sequence of buttons and remotes. She does, however, enjoy being able to 'time shift' to catch network shows she missed part of earlier. She also enjoys some of the news programs from the L.A. area.

My question is for any of you out there that have distant networks that you have been using for 'time shifting' ... are they worth keeping, or is the lure of locals via the sat bird so strong that you are willing to give up the distant networks? If I go with the satellite locals I will be getting 7 channels (WB, UPN, PBS, FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS) but via OTA I currently only get 5 (no WB or UPN), so that would be a gain of 2 channels, plus they can then be recorded via the DVR- can't do that now with the OTA locals.

Any profound thoughts on these issues? The current setup with regard to networks is 'tolerable' to the wife, but she would really like to simplify things.

Arggggh! Choices! Arggggh!!

Go with the sat locals and drop the LA Nets. The nets in L.A. are so heavily compressed they aren't watchable. If you have a dual tuner dvr you should be good for watching the network shows you like and being able to record them also. This is one of the biggest perks to a dvr; being able to record and watch your favorite shows when you want to.

The dual tuners should eliminate the need for the west coast locals. If you have an antenna for ota locals, you could always watch these while the sat receiver dvr records two other channels at the same time. Using the vcr you could record the ota channels while watching something else. That's 4 possible channels you can watch at the same time ; recording 3 channels while watching one live using the vcr and dvr, or watching a recorded show as well.

As far as wife acceptance and dumbing down the technology for her, you could do this. Plug the sat receiver into the vcr using either rca jacks or s-video if the vcr is capable, on the line 1 channel and use the ota coax from the ota atenna into the coax input of the vcr. Then you can easily toggle through the vcr channels and it's all in one box. Sat and ota channel alike. I set my parents up like this since they are slow on uptake with technology.

My vcrs at home are set up like this also except the main vcr and the 721. On the big screen with the 721 I have the vcr with the stand alone Tivo with ota atenna coax hooked into it, plugged into the front of my 721 . This allows the aux channel 0 of the sat receiver to be used as the channel to see the vcr and the Tivo. This also allows all my ota channels to be upconverted to pcm sound and the video picture to be played through the s-video connections of the 721.

My wife sadly, still has trouble understanding on this tv all she has to do is hit the 0 on the sat guide to access the Tivo with the ota channels. She often just watches the small tv in the bedroom where the vcr is the main box with the sat receiver fed into it.

Some women are not tech savy , no matter what you do. :?

I have basic cable ($11.00 per month) hooked to the TV for my wife. She is happy with the 26 channels available. She has finally learned how to watchd the TiVo with directions written on a piece of paper, but to switch to the sat reciever and switch between SD & HD is beyond her comprehension. I have all her favorite shows with season passes on the TiVo.

Just finished S2. Watching Gary Oldman as deshvilved, dejected MI-6 agent, Jackson Lamb, is one of the best things streaming right now. Already 2 more seasons in the works. HIGHLY recommended. And yes, Mick Jagger sings the theme.

I think this new season is a little too slow of a burn (as of ep #4, probably due to new show runner. However, I can't wait to find out what's up with Taverner!

Well, the season finale went balls to the wall. Non stop action and several twisted twists. Gary Oldman at his best. Very well written and executed. Tavener owes Jackson big time. Only "if" was Jack Lowden's (River) cliffhanger, especially admin-st the buzz that he is the next James Bond in waiting.

Planning to start the new season tonight. :)

On Tuesday, I recorded the first episodes of the new season's NCIS shows on CBS (Dish provided, not OTA). The new New York series and Origins will both do Auto Skip, but the original, now season 24 does not. What's stranger, when I do a search for NCIS, Origins and New York show the current recording and the next episode it will record, but the original show only shows the current recording and some other channel showing the very first episode of season one. It makes no sense. When I set up the timers, I was able to use search for Origins and New York, but for the original, I had to scroll ahead in the guide until last Tuesday when the show was airing. Then set the timer from there. You can see its timer type is DVR where the other two are Seek. What am I missing?
Thanks!

With both CBS and Fox autohop (as we know) is not enabled for a week..But after 24 hours if you mash the FF button until the red kangaroo shows up in the bottom right you wont overshoot the program. No need to try to figure how long the break is.

Yep. We do this all the time, but we use the 30-sec skip forward button until the red kangaroo shows up. Love this feature.

I'm a bit confused about the recording methods.
Do you havePrime Time Anytime enabled, by doing that you don't have to set recordings for Prime time programs on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox stations, it's done daily, 7 days a week.
And only 2 weeks recordings are saved, no deletions either.

Correct. If you enable PTAT, you don't have to set other timers for those programs. You can choose all of the 4 networks or as few as you want. You also can choose all 7 days or other options. However the programs will auto delete after 8 days unless you save that episode or save the whole series.

WCWW/25 CW South Bend and WBKP/5 CW Marquette are now testing on the stream server. These are both already available on satellite.

Now live in the satellite guide:
663-2 PISTONS (663-1 is likely being reserved for an overflow feed of Detroit Sportsnet, if there's a 2027 MLB season)

Wait…..
So even though DAZN keeps touting 'only way to see games' if you are a subscriber to Choice (like my stepdad) if an agreement is reached he can see the Wolfies on 668?
I know the Wild are in dispute and a slate is on 668-1.

They're finally live in the app's API, doing a check

PISTONS is not available in Detroit (WMYD/20), it is available in the rest of Michigan including Marquette who also gets the games on their MyNet station WJMN/3, along with the Toledo DMA and the northern portions of the South Bend and Fort Wayne DMAs.

THUNDER is available in OKC and Tulsa, so I wonder if DTV is just going to keep the OTA feeds of KSBI/52 and KQCW/19 and direct viewers to 675 for the rest of the games.
On stream it's in Choice for Oklahoma (inlcuding the Oklahoma portions of the Amarillo, Sherman-Ada, Wichita Falls-Lawton and Joplin DMAs) and Western Arkansas and requires Sports Pack for Nebraska, Kansas and Western Missouri, I'm not sure if it's the same for satellite.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I had one, the front panel lighting was cool, the menus were fresh and a lot more modern looking than the ViPs. However, it was very buggy and the Sling functionality just didn't work well - I think it was due to internet speeds at the time. I think I had to pay $40 for the Sling app on my phone iirc.

I had both the 921 and the 922. I used to buy them from DishDepot.com in Florida and trade in my older owned receiver towards the newest receiver. The 921 was a reboot receiver and the sling part was hit or miss. I look back on all those receivers I paid for over 25 years and I think it was just TV. If I had that money back now I would be lot richer. My Owned Hopper 3 is sitting in a drawer in my office not being used.
T
That was part of the Ergen scheme, to sell the product as well as the service. And who didn't want the best box?

Maybe they went to the hopper because they were running out of 3-digit model #s- 1022 would have been kinda clunky. Folks would have tried to say "one-thousand and twenty two" instead of "ten-twenty-two".

Like some say "two thousand and twenty six".

That's not really unusual. Cable companies like to the provide the box too. The phone company provided the phones in until the government forced them to allow third-party phones.

Amazon Sets 'The Lord of the Rings' TV Series In Mega Deal With Multi-Season Commitment

$250 Million just for the rights to make something :eeek

The LOTR original series, a prequel to Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust; HarperCollins; and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment, which produced the hugely successful LOTR movie franchise.

Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring.

Two friends recommended this show to me and I was hooked by the second ep of season 1! Production values are amazing and the episode runtimes are (typically) over an hour, which makes it really easy get hooked on the story because they're playing it out with movie-like pacing rather than a 34-40 minute episode. Acting and casting is really good as well!

I got started on season 2 a few nights ago and was wondering if anyone else is watching?

I am amazed you like it.

Made it thru season 1, thought it was terrible, but wanted to give it a chance, made it to halfway on Season 2, Episode 2, just could not take it anymore.

It like they took the worse Lord of the Rings fan-fiction off the internet and made it into a TV Series.

Yes, the production values are high, but that does not make it into a good series.

They're taking a lot of this from The Silmarillion, of which I'm not quite a third of the way through yet, and sure, they've invented some new people, places and situations, but it's still (IMHO) a really good prequel to LOTR. Having only just started season 2, I'm still enjoying it quite a bit. I'm really not seeing the fan-fic angle in it. If season 2 proves to be as enjoyable as season 1 was for me, I'd sure like to see a 3rd season.
