Rainbow DBS's Satellite Service VOOM, U.S. Digital Television and Akimbo
to Support Windows Media 9 Series;
Submission of VC-9 to SMPTE Reaches Committee Draft Status

LAS VEGAS, April 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today at NAB2004, Microsoft
Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) announced that leading broadcast companies are developing
or deploying tools and services that support Microsoft(R) Windows Media(R) 9
Series. Among the companies adopting Windows Media 9 Series for its high
quality and compression efficiency are Rainbow DBS, the satellite services
division of Cablevision Systems Corp.; Akimbo Systems; Shanghai Broadcasting
Lab; and U.S. Digital Television Inc. (USDTV).
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO )
Rainbow DBS's satellite service, VOOM, is the first television service to
offer a comprehensive array of high-definition (HD) programming to customers
throughout the continental United States. VOOM will use Windows Media 9 Series
as one of the compression technologies to expand its available satellite
capacity for HD offerings from more than 30 to more than 60 channels. VOOM
plans to roll out advanced codecs beginning with standard definition (SD)
later this year and HD next year.
"We are extremely impressed by the compression capabilities of Windows
Media 9 Series," said Bill Casamo, executive vice president of sales and
marketing at Rainbow DBS. "With over 30 HD channels, VOOM is already
delivering far more HD programming than any other cable or satellite provider.
Utilizing these codecs, among others, within our network will allow VOOM
customers to experience even more high-quality HD programming, as well as SD
programming, and will support the growth and addition of new services over the
next few years."

Ken, that was an excellent post - all relevant MPEG-4/WM9 information in a concise format! It would make an outstanding "Hot Topic" or FAQ :up
G
I am hoping ,as several posts have mentioned, that the PQ will also improve. I really don't want more channels if the PQ is going to be the same. Although I think my conern may be more with the Motorola STB from VOOM. The PQ of OTA from my previous Sammy tuner was much sharper and crisper than the Motorola seems to be able to put out. Compression, I don't think, is going to help the OTA thru the current receiver.

I have Called VOOM with my concern and they offered to switch boxes. I hope that works. ON the way out, the tech called to say that his truck blew up. Naturally. May not belong in this thread but for me the key is still the PQ "Wow" experience. Anything that will put that back, I am for.

The only downside of those WM9 samples on the microsoft site are that, while they are in fact 720p and 1080p, this simply describes the vertical resolution and the fact that they are non-interlaced.

720p standard is 1280x720x60fps, these files are indeed 1280x720, but depending on the source, they are either 30fps or 24fps.

1080p should imply 1920x1080x60fps, while these are 1440x1080x24fps.

These files are nowhere near the bitrates that the broadcasts would be, as most are set at 8Mbps, so even scaling up the framerate to the 60fps (or 30 for 1080i) and bumping the 1080 resolution up to the full 1920 would still provide similar quality as the samples, while staying within the ~15Mbps streams we are using currently.
K
crazi,

There is no 1080p/60 defined in ATSC table 3. It defines 1080p/24 and 1080p/30 -- the maximum. The 720p format can be in 24, 30, or 60 fps (if you want to get technical: 23.976, 24, 29.97, 30, 59.94, and 60 hz).

All the content on that site sourced from film -- compare it to the content on HBO. That's why it's at 24fps. If it was at 720p60, it would be using repeat flags, so there'd be little to no additional bandwidth required -- but more cpu required. HBOHD, for example, is usually delivered at 24fps with repeat flags for 1080i/30 (of course, they have some video content too)

As for 1440x1080, it's common to encode that way, because that's the max acquisition resolution supported by a number of current HD cameras. The HDNews channel on VOOM is encoded and delivered at 1440x1080i, for example.
C
i understand the purpose of the 24fps, on film based material. I know a lot of people see 1080p and assume 60fps, so I wanted to make sure that this was apparent. I have seen a few sports broadcasts that were 720p (60fps) and the motion is unparalleled. People see 1080p and think they are getting the higher resolution, with that same lifelike motion, which is usually not the case. It is possible with WM9 to do this, but the bandwidth would be so high, or the compression rate so high, that it would not be worth the improvement over 720p.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Thanks for the updates on CW norfolk
Hopefully comes to sat soon!!

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

Be nice to see a Cowboy headline like that.
Yes the Cowboys owner needs to fire the general manager (himself), co-owner, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel, and President of AT&T Stadium (his son) and then he should jump off of a cliff. Only then can they recover.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

I was a devout Cowboy fan in the Landry era, grudgingly gave Jimmy his due, since then not so much, the Jones family took care of that...

Odd that out there, Prem is only 40 cents higher. Here it's a full dollar more.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Both non-ethanol and prem run about the same....buck more. When we were up in TN it was a buck more up there as well.

In Oregon, our premium boat gas is about a dollar more than our corn premium. Several stations only offer the non-corn premium grade.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

17 years ago the US turned off analog OTA signals in favor of digital broadcasting. Now the push is ATSC 3 "Nextgen TV". But nobody seems to be able to agree on DRM implementation protocols. People don't want to hook their TV up to the internet in order to watch over the air TV. At least I don't. With all the data they collect about your viewing habits the box should be given away at no cost.
