How widespread is the HDMI problem?
The HDMI output on my 411 stopped working today. Dish insists it is a software problem and didn't want to preplace my unit, but after talking to many people they have finally agreed to replace it.

After talking with dish earlier today, I began playing with the HDMI connection at the 411 and I've gotten it to work again, but it isn't pretty. In frustration I pulled the HDMI cable to the left and suddenly I had a picture. When I let it go the picture was lost again. A pulled it tight again and the picture came back, so I taped the cable in place. It has now been 8 hours and the connection is still working.
Obviously this wasn't a software problem. The HDMI ports on the units themselves I believe are bad or improperly installed.

HDMI on HD DVD PLAYERS

Does anyone have the latest news/thories/ poop on the rumors that both HD player formats now available have a nasty little encryption chip built into them that prevents the buyer from receiving "true" HD (1080i, I guess) unless he's using the HDMI port? In other words, if you have an HD set with no HDMI port--like me--you won't get a full HD DVD picture even if you use the component port and even if you have no intention of trying to copy anything, you just wanna watch tv.

I know this was a rumor a while back, even though I found it incredible that the FCC would permist such a thing, but can someone tell me if this was all erroneous bull or that I am indeed out of luck getting the best HD DVD picture with my old HD tv?

Thanks!

No if you go from HDMI to DVI it should not support audio. You must go HDMI to HDMI. DVI does not pass audio only HDMI to HDMI this is why TV's with DVI inputs have audio inputs below them. To where TV's with HDMI input on back will not have a audio input below them.

Yes, I know that.

I was saying (among other things) that it was my understanding that the 622's HDMI port didn't pass audio even if you -did- have it hooked up to a HDMI input on your TV.

There were some comments awhile back about "why do they call it a HDMI port on the 622 when it doesn't support the HDMI spec (w/audio)"...

It always passed audio, but did not originally comply with some of the rest of the spec. I believe that changes they made that allowed it to pass DD 5.1 now make it compliant.

Ah, yes...that's what I was misremembering -- the 5.1 thing.

I'm continuing to have HDMI problems after the software downgrade, so it looks like it's probably the port pins acting up.

It's nice to have the built-in HDMI test to see what's going on in real-time, but the info is not terribly easy to parse. With mine, it appears that when the EDID checksum -fails-, it's connected OK... That threw off my troubleshooting for a while...

At the moment, the determining factor seems to be whether the HDMI test reports that the HDMI port is enabled on the Dish STB side or not (TRUE or FALSE). I dunno what throws it to FALSE, though. When it was on FALSE and I rebooted the Dish, it came back up TRUE, and then I could hit the "Reset HDMI" button and the HDMI (DVI) came through on the TV OK again...

So i've gone through 2 211's with the hdmi not working. I gave up and just used component. I haven't gone through this whole thread but have the recent software upgrades fixed the port at all, because of course thats been their excuse for it not working.

snookie,

I had a perfectly fine 211 that now gives me a "snowy screen" every 3-4 days since the last software update.

I know that for playback on a PC, the monitor has to support HDCP for the full resolution. If you don't have HDMI or DVI, then you may not get the full resolution.
D
I suffered for quite some time without HDMI on my 211 model. Dish repeatedly told me that it was a software problem. At some point about ten months ago, I raised hell with them and demanded the 211 be replaced. They complied and the replacement unit has had no HDMI problems. So my advice is to raise hell and demand a replacement unit.

Are you sure? I didn't think E* had activated HDCP. I've tried my computer monitor in the past without problems (but not lately).

If anyone cares, I finally figured out the problem in my case. As I had suspected, Dish changed their software to require an EDID response from the display in order to complete the HDMI handshake. My old Samsung CRT HDTV, although it was new enough to have a DVI input (and supposedly HDCP 1.0), it wasn't new enough to have an EDID ROM installed.

I had long ago given up and switched the Dish over to component, but I ran into the same problem when I recently bought a new DVD player with HDMI output (although the older DVD w/HDMI I had worked OK) . I bought a DVI Detective box, copied the EDID from my computer monitor, and lo! and behold -- both the Dish and DVD player work fine through the DVI input...

But.....if you like Tulsa King....looks like you would probably like this as well. I don't mind spin-offs as long as they don't involve a sassy niece who moves from the big city

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Trailer below, spoiling it to make sure you read the above bold message first. The book / audio book are fantastic. Go into this blind if you can IMO!

Kind of disappointed at how much they show. A lot still to see, but man, some good reveals in the book that are just served up here.

I've seen it twice. Can't recommend the audio book enough, Ray Porter's performance is amazing and there's so much more in the book than the movie.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

I had quit watching this show years ago because I ended up more annoyed than entertained. Well......I'm STILL more annoyed than entertained. I DO find it interesting to see how things work behind the scenes at many businesses. What annoys me is how utterly out of touch CEOs are with the companies they run. At the end of almost every episode the head of the company is amazed at how hard the employees have to work and many times have to work around impossible guidelines set forth from headquarters.

I found this one interesting because the new CEO had big plans for this company, Muscle Maker Grill, and it looked like the stores were all pretty busy. Recent history hasn't been good to this company however. I bet the covid lockdowns were the real killer.
