The satcaster is taking heat for not adding more national HD channels -- and allegedly diluting the picture on existing ones.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (September 21, 2006) -- It's not been a good week for DIRECTV. Well, at least not for the executives who oversee the company's High-Definition TV service.

First, Eric Shanks, DIRECTV's executive vice president of entertainment, revealed to TVPredictions.com that the satcaster would not add more national HDTV channels until the second quarter of 2007. Shanks said DIRECTV instead would focus on rolling out local HD channels in more markets across the country. (DIRECTV is launching several new satellites to expand its local HD service now and national HD in 2007.)

Since the revelation, TVPredictions.com has received approximately 100 negative e-mails from DIRECTV subscribers, complaining that DIRECTV's nine-channel national high-def lineup fares poorly compared to rival satcaster EchoStar (30 national HD channels) and several cable systems (anywhere from 15 to 25 HD channels.)

And then, to compound the problem, TVPredictions.com disclosed yesterday that Peter Cohen, a DIRECTV subscriber in the Los Angeles area, has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, charging that it has fraudulently reduced the picture resolution on its high-def channels since 2004. Cohen says the satcaster diluted the picture after promising "astonishing picture quality" when he signed up for the service and purchased the HD equipment.

(The charge is that DIRECTV "squeezes" the picture resolution to save money and/or create room for more channels.)

DIRECTV's Eric Shanks.

DIRECTV denies the charge, saying its HDTV picture quality is as good or better than anyone. But a judge this week ruled against DIRECTV's motion for a quick arbitration settlement.

The lawsuit was red meat for some disgruntled DIRECTV HD subscribers who crowded Internet message boards with disparaging comments about what they call, 'DIRECTV HD Lite.'

"Thanks for standing up for all us, Mr. Cohen," one writer stated at the AVS Forum.

How Big Is the Problem?
DIRECTV would appear to be in danger of alienating the growing high-def audience. More than 20 million U.S. homes now have high-def sets and sales are expected to boom during the holiday season. While e-mail writers and Internet posters do not represent that entire audience, they do reflect a growing unrest among DIRECTV's HD subscribers.

But just how bad is the damage? To answer that, we need to more closely examine the week's two news developments:

1. No National HDTV Channels Until 2007
DIRECTV has only added two national HD channels (TNT HD and ESPN 2HD) in the last year, a big disappointment considering chief rival EchoStar is now at 30 national HD channels. Many DIRECTV high-def owners say they were sure the satcaster would have added at least a few more by now -- and certainly more by the 2006 holidays. DIRECTV at this point does not carry such HD networks as Starz HD, MHD (MTV Networks' high-def music channel), National Geographic HD and Food Network HD.

So will DIRECTV's HD subscribers jump ship? Probably not -- at least for a few months.

The satcaster has the exclusive rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket, the pay package of Sunday football games. The 'Ticket' is a huge attraction for young males, a large segment of the high-def audience. It's unlikely they will pull the plug on their favorite pastime during the season.

However, come January, DIRECTV could start to lose its HD base if they continue to say no more national HD channels until the second quarter.

2. The Class Action Lawsuit
DIRECTV says the case has no merit, but the mere filing has triggered a wave of negative publicity about its high-def service.

To make matters worse, Cohen's charge is a tough one to defend. Even if DIRECTV's high-def resolution is up to industry standards, many HD owners who have poorly tuned sets will still think it's the satcaster's fault. Regardless of what DIRECTV does from now, a perception has been created that it dilutes the picture.

However, DIRECTV next year will switch to a new HD compression technology, called MPEG 4, which promises cleaner and more detailed images. Perhaps then, DIRECTV will be able to turn the issue around.

So, bottom line, DIRECTV has been hurt by the two revelations. But when it switches to MPEG 4 -- and adds a large number of national HD channels, as promised -- I suspect that all will be forgiven.

Sometimes I crack up reading the negativity. . . Ford or Chevy, Honda or Toyota, chocolate or vanilla, Republican or Democrat? CHOICES!!! We all have choices. I prefer Sunday Ticket and local HD to FoodHD, A&E HD, etc. That is my choice, and it works for me. We could argue this forever, and probably will, but there will always be an opposing viewpoint. :D This is what makes this forum fun. :p

I will admit I like StarzHD and MAXHD, and thus I pay for cable to get those. If I had E* I would have STarzHD, but then need D* for Sunday Ticket, and cable for MaxHD. See my point here. There is NO perfect provider right now, so we all have to choose what is right for us.

I for one am happy with D*, because I am getting what I want. Now that the fall tv shows have started, as well as the football season, I don't watch anything but D*. I am even considering canceling cable, as the boxes rarely get used. In the future, if I don't get what I want, I will go somewhere else or add another provider

My dad, and two other people I know, are dropping E* to go to D*. They get partial OTA signals, and cannot watch FOX or CBS. The really want their locals in HD, and do not really care about all of the HD channels on E* they never watch. HDnet and UHD did keep them from going to Comcast though. They made a choice! I did warn them about the PQ on D* vs E*, and they commented that E*'s is not that much better and has gone downhill. They remarked that getting HD locals, is greater concern for them than PQ on national HD's. (This makes it hard for me to argue against D*'s HD strategy.)

I guess too much of something is a bad thing. We are spoiled (and love it) and very lucky to have multiple providers, but we have to remember that we are not the average customers that these companies cater too. Voom, as a satellite company, tried to cater to the HD fanatics, and where are they now? My friends often remind me with all of the toys and gadgets I have, that I am not an average consumer.

As much as I would love full HD quality, and a world where SD does not exist, I am happy for now. When USA, SciFi, FX, and other channels that I watch go HD, then I will go where I can get them, as well as my Sunday Ticket. If it is on one provider I will be there, but if I have to have multiple providers, I will be there as well.

Until then, I will just sit back and watch my locals and football games in HD!!!

Funny how these "poorly tuned sets" seem to have great pictures with OTA HD.
Agreed, I am surprised that nobody has commented on this. My consistent gripe with D* (I admit I am wishy-washy on other) is that their HD line-up should look as good as my OTA.

My TV used to look like crap, then I ran AVIA and it was great, but I was able to see degraded SD programming. Now thanks to the CEDIA SatGuys Party I have tried SpyderTV and woo hoo, that thing kicks butt, if you want detail (for OTA) this device is the way to go.

The D* PQ has been sliding off for 3 years and honestly I feel I have been compensated by customer retention, but I would give it all back for full bandwidth SD & HD Programming. I used to pump D* PQ to the point of insanity but in the last three years it has gone to crap across the board.

I am an NFL ST Sub and these HD channels look good, if that EVER changes I'll file a suit myself. It is the only reason I am a D* sub. The other reason as I have recently discovered is TiVo and HD TiVo ... so MPEG4 is no longer running in my home, Despite the awkward AT9 now on my house.

D* needs to change, to kill the churn they discuss. Thanks to all the other members for your insight as well!

What people need to understand is that DirecTV's management is now made of of quite a number of former Dish Network folks. ;)

sorry you make no sense, I kinda see where you are coming from, if sat isnt launched, then no 150 national channels, but also in the same breath, if a sat for E* breaks down no channels, if cable has problems No HD Channels, you could really say that about any company. and your right Dish network is not promising National HD channels in the future, only D*, remember that.

and E* never promised 30HD channels right now either, but they have them.
From what I see E* just adds things without all the hype.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Which one has O'Neil being Ancients? I am at the end of Season 8 now.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.
