That's right, there is so much good news right now on the PS3 that in one day Sony's shares rose 3.7%. Bet you want some of that money!

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6159788.html

Man, is this market fickel or what. The battery problem aside (what's up with that -- batteries exploding?) BS about the PS3 comes out and shares go down, the TRUTH comes out and in one day -- BAMM!! - all the way back and then some!:D

XBOX360 doesn't need anything more than DVD9 because you say there is room enough. For M$ Boxers that is true. Seems I remember when Nintendo was trying to convince everybody that there was plenty of room in their cartridges for games. How'd that work out.

Seems I remember that when the PS2 came out with a DVD player Sega as saying that there was plenty of room on their CDs for game content. How'd that work out?

So now it is M$ saying there is plenty of room on DVD9 for game content. Anyone here see a pattern developing?

The true progression of gaming has gone from the original Ultima for the PC on 10 5.25 discs to gaming posisbilities using the space available on a high definition disc. Notice here I did not say which HD disc.

The bottom line is that when programmers are given anything they are going to use it -- wheather that is memory, CPU speed, cache, Graphic GPU's , graphic memory , hard drive space, intial storage space on a CD, DVD or high def disc.

The programmers will use whatever is available to them. So lets see, a DVD-9 can hold what -- 9gb ? and a BluRay can hold 25 GB. So that would be 3 DVD's to one BluRay. Gets interesting when we double BluRay to 50 gb as that would be 9 DVD's. So I can see how that would get most gamers dander up if one said (like I believe Sony has) that in order to do true HD gaming you would really need a High Def delivery system like BluRay.

But can this possible be right? If we look at the CD to DVD transistion you would see 470mb to 9gb! So we would be talking 18 discs to one DVD-9! Well it did not take long for the programmers to blow right by the CD limit. Why can no one here see that in a year or two some programmers will blow right by the DVD-9 limit? It is going to happen sooner or latter. The game will have better graphics, textures, aninmation, sound, play mechanics, high resolutions, less repetition that are being seen in too many games right now.

Just because M$ says that you don't need it does not neccessarily make that the truth. Just because Sony says you need it right now does not neccessarily make it the truth.

But if history is telling us anything, games will get bigger, longer and better looking and that is going to use more disc space for delivery. That is just the nature of gaming -- whether it happens now or latter is moot. It will happen and right now the PS3 is designed for longer use then the XBOX360 in this current gamming generation. Whether that pans out will depend on the programmers and the people who buy their games -- the customer.

I work for a living and have a family so as far as I am concerned Sony has lost their minds. What they are asking is a car payment, a movie out with the family, my first born son, and a body part or two to pay for their system. I will just get the Wii and have fun.

Come on dude, lets be honest. We have just recently started using DVD media for games. We were using CD media for at least 6 years. Space utilization isnt moving as fast as you think it is. I don't even think HD DVD is needed for games.

RIGHT NOW there are very few games breaking 4.5gb. With FEAR for the PC at 4.2 GB (not breaking but close), Act of War Direct action for the PC was 5.2 GB but has ALOT of FMV Cutscenes.. And for the 360 you have Oblivion clocking in at 6.4GB, Just cause in at 6GB WITH 3 spoken languages and both games will keep you busy for days WITH HD Graphics and 3 spoken languages in Just Cause.

Needing that much space will definately happen but definately not now. I also think if Sony would have made the BluRay Drive as an add on, it would probably sell way more consoles than it will currently because it would lower the price greatly since the drive alone is reported to cost Sony $300 which so happens to be 1/2 the price of the console. If they did make it an add on I don't think there would be as much "Sony hate" as there is now on other gamer sites.

So let me shorten it to Joe speak... so he gets the main points without having to read...

-We have been using CD media for games for at least 6 years.
-Games using the most disc space are sandbox games 1 having 3 spoken languages.
-Sony could have sold far more consoles by making the BD player an addon threfore keeping costs down. Last time I checked, from a business perspective, selling more is good.
- BD Drive is reported to be costing Sony $300 each which is 1/2 the price of the PS3.
- Keeps the console affordable to more people and reduce the "Sony Hate" not only here but other gaming sites.

Seems I remember when Nintendo was trying to convince everybody that there was plenty of room in their cartridges for games. How'd that work out.

8MB cartridge versus 650MB-700MB Discs...
that means low-spec N64 carts were 1% the size of PS1 media. This hardly compares with the 360/PS3 situation where the DVD-9 spec would be (even held to the hypothetical standard) 18% of 50GB discs. More than likely though, they will be around 36% the size of a 25GB disc. This again assumes the developer will use the full capacity of the disc, and not load it with MPEG-2 video files (which would be more convenient than using Blu-Ray spec VC-1 or h.264 video but also take up more space). While compression means more work for the developer, it can produce favorable results(i.e. comparable quality) for lower capacity mediums. If you don't believe me, compare MPEG-4 video files that use MPEG-2 as their source. You'll find there are DIVX files that are encoded so well, that they are virtually indistinguishable from the source, and capable of being put on 1-2 CD-R's as opposed to a full 4-9GB disc. The gap is much more negligible in this case. Sound, video, and texture compression are all feasible avenues to fill the gap. Note that I'm not saying the PS3 isn't capable of outperforming the 360, but the storage issue alone does not make the most compelling case for graphical superiority.

Seems I remember that when the PS2 came out with a DVD player Sega as saying that there was plenty of room on their CDs for game content. How'd that work out?
Sega didn't use CD's. They used GD-Roms which held 1GB of space per disc. The music was often compressed, though this was not noticeable. The discs also held movies and other content. Multi-disc games were an option for the developer as well. Some of the best games came out for the Dreamcast (Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2, Marvel VS Capcom, Capcom VS SNK 1 & 2, THPS2, Jet Grind Radio, Powerstone, Rez, Evil Twin, Rayman 2) despite that Sony ultimately won out because their base was devoted to the platform before the PS2 even came out. Most people I know didn't depend on the PS2 to play their DVD's. The output was dark and colors looked washed. Piracy may have also done Sega in when pirates realized an exploit in the DC that allowed the system to boot game executables off CD-R's by tricking the laser into thinking it was reading the boot sector of a GD-ROM, without the need of a modchip.

So now it is M$ saying there is plenty of room on DVD9 for game content. Anyone here see a pattern developing?
BetaMax, MiniDisc, exploding laptop batteries, rootkits... I see a pattern there too. But that doesn't mean PS3 won't reign supreme in the console war. I'm sure brand loyalty will ensure this. Sony's flock is everywhere including the guys at Best Buy who unanimously support the BD standard. I'm just saying that before we all decide to hand our wallets over to Sony for both our gaming and movie entertainment, we reanalyze our position. Sony won the console war of PS2/GC/XBOX not because they had the best hardware, but because they had a great library of software. Yet its programmers were still capable of churning out exclusive next-gen titles with fancy graphics even though its first round of titles (some of which were DC ports) ended up being graphically comparable in some respects to the Dreamcast.

I second this. I'm in the lucky position that I could afford any of these (heck, even all of these) but only Wii will make it to my living room. PS3 is not only doesn't offer anything over my PC - that's true for 360 as well - but it's crazy overpriced as well.
Wii, on the contrary, comes with a new invention, its brand new control system - and the icing on the cake is its very reasonable price. Hey, for $250 probably I'd pick up one anyway...

New troubles for Sony. A few of their 1080p XBR TVs won't accept a 1080p signal via component,.... so all those XBox 360 owners who thought they were getting 1080p thanks to the new fall update are now looking at black screens. Lucky ones who bought new TVs yesterday and in the next few weeks will get to return them....

Bravo Sony. Way to embrace the piracy paranoia. You've proven once again that the consumer will always come second when it comes to consumer usability vs. the anti copying goons.....

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Updated to H713 on a Hopper 3 from H712 with Hopper Plus a few hours earlier.

It brought a old problem back:

One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software.

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency but it's broken again.

Within the last few hours as I did check earlier today when it was still missing, the Available Joey Software line now has added "P154 P15403" which is for the Hopper Plus that I have but my Hopper Plus software is still on P15317, I will do a Download Android TV (ATV) Software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey which are all Android TV devices and then manually do a check update on the Hopper Plus to update the software shortly.

This happened to me. I was outside mowing and my wife came out and said that our nieces and nephews were going to be on the Noon News. She had it on in the bedroom on our Joey3. Since they weren't on yet, I decided to turn it on in the Living Room on our Hopper3. When I selected the channel (through Dish, not OTA) the Joey3 turned itself off. When I went back to the bedroom to turn it back on, the Hopper3 did a reboot. Luckily it all finished before their story came on, but I just found it strange.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

Please post your remote make/model here and any details of your issue. We are looking to collect as many examples as possible. I may reach out to you for your receiver number, but please do not post it here.

If you've already reported this to me, please repost it here so I can track all instances in one thread.

Thanks!

I have a solution that is guaranteed to work.
All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

It is not just a display signal as explained above. When you have the Hopper+ connected, it uses Android TV for pretty much everything except for the satellite signal which is why it uses the DISH app for the standard Hopper 3 functions. But that should not matter because in your case, CasinoH3 is the Hopper 3 with the EHD which is what you call the naughty one based on the dates you mentioned and Master Bedroom which has the Hopper Plus connected to the Hopper 3 that does not have the problem. So one way to test the theory is disconnect the Hopper Plus from that Hopper 3 and then use the EHD's connected to CasinoH3 currently to see if the same issue exists. That way you will know if the problem is there without a Hopper Plus connected or if CasinoH3 is just a bad hopper to begin with.

Normally when you disconnect the Hopper Plus, it will be 30 minutes or more before you can use the Hopper 3 again.

What you want to do is:
hold the POWER button in, not the red reset button, for about 45 seconds or so while disconnecting the power to the Plus and moving the HDMI cable and it will reboot to the normal Hopper only immediately.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Theres more NFL info in the Pub section than in the Sports/NFL thread.

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.
A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Nah, you just don't understand how ignore works, which is why you made your own NFL thread thinking there wasn't one 🤣

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

That's the point at which innovation ends, and there's no longer any point to software engineering other than swatting bugs that result from misapplication.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

... and people who couldn't do it at all now can.
Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

You're not wrong, but that's part of learning. Whether from others or our own mistakes, we've all learned that lesson one way or another.

I'm not sure that the school of hard knocks is the quickest or surest education to find your way.

There are many examples in the headlines of people getting burned multiple times and not wavering in their pursuit of stupidity.

Good thing not everyone will have to learn the hard way then. The same tools can explain why something broke.

This is true of literally anything, though.

Happy to agree to disagree, but I'm already enjoying the dividends personally and helping others at work and at home do the same.

I was watching some of this guy's stuff and realized some of you may not be familiar. Basically his show is Candid Camera meets a magician. This is a comp of a few of his exploits. I first learned of him when I was out at a meeting in Denver about 10yrs ago. The men I was sitting at the table with started talking about this show and said it was one of the funniest things they had seen. When I got home I started watching it....yes, it is funny.

Now testing on the stream server:
WJBF-D2 CW Augusta GA
KSVI-D2 CW Billings MT
WETM-D2 CW Elmira NY
WJET-D2 CW Erie PA
KLFY-D2 CW Lafayette LA
KARD-D2 CW Monroe LA
WVBT-D2 CW Norfolk VA
WTWO-D2 CW Terre Haute IN
WFXV-D2 CW Utica NY
KFDX-D3 CW Wichita Falls TX

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Thanks for the updates on CW norfolk
Hopefully comes to sat soon!!

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

I'm curious how they are going to implement Tony into Origins (If they do) ...
Tony was introduced to Gibbs and the team, on NCIS, which makes it the Mothership side of things, he worked in Baltimore prior to NCIS, NO mention when they met that anyone had known one another ...
