Dreambox Reality I PVR

Hardware:
LIAN LI PC-V880B Black Aluminum ATX Desktop Computer Case
PC Power & Cooling SILENCER® 360 ATX
TYAN S2507T, TIGER 230T, 694T, DUAL SOCKET 370, 5PCI, AGP4X, 4 DIMM
Intel Pentium P3 1.40 GHz 133 MHz 512 KB 370
19dB Nexus AXP-3200 Quiet CPU Fan for Socket 370
1GB of SDRAM
ASUS N6200/TD 256MB VIDEO CARD
Logitech® Cordless Desktop® EX 110

To save some money I decided to use ATA-100 vs. SCSI Ultra320…two 73GB SCSI drives $500, instead I decided to pick up two HITACHI SATA hard drives at a cost of $150, yes SCSI drives are twice as fast…but SATA drives are almost three times as big, more storage. There are no PVR receivers out on the market that come with 500GB 2 drives installed or setup as raid 1, yet. I will continue to modify this list of parts until I find an optimal performance level at a reasonable cost.

Promise FastTrak S150 TX2 Plus Serial ATA Raid Controller
HITACHI Deskstar T7K250 HDT722525DLA380 (0A31636) 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

SAMSUNG 18X DVD±R DVD Burner with 12X DVD-RAM Write Black E-IDE/ATAPI Model SH-S182D

TechniSat DVB PCI Card The SkyStar 2

Software:
Microsoft Windows XP Pro
VMware Workstation 5.5
Fedora Linux Core 6

Step 1: Putting all the Hardware together

Install PC Power Cooling Power supply in the LIAN LI PC-V880B case is straight forward. Next install Tyan motherboard into the case, once again straight forward (I have done it a few times so don't wary, it really is that easy). Next install CPU's and CPU cooling fans, and memory (SDRAM). At this point install hard drives and DVD R/RW connect all power connections. Now we can start to installation of graphics card, then DVB card, and decent sound card, that all folks…unless I decide to add some other piece of hardware feature for future use…I will provide pictures for each one of these steps.

Step 2: Installing all the software

I will first install Microsoft Windows XP Pro as host operating system, and then WMware Workstation 5.5 and finally Fedora Linux Core 6. WMware runs multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single PC. Users can run Windows, Linux, NetWare, or Solaris x86 in fully networked, portable virtual machines - no rebooting or hard drive partitioning required. Note that before I install Linux I have to decide which of the two options to use…I will come back to this latter when I am actually installing. Not much needs to be added here since the software and the idea speaks for itself, just let your imagination take you where you want to be.

There are some options that I would like to see my Dreambox Reality I PVR machine project. Instant backup of the whole disk that contains all the operating systems and various software packages (2 disk RAID 1 can be an option, Adaptec - Adaptec ATA RAID 1200A or Promise - FastTrak S150 TX2)…for the PVR option a second disk (storing/recording) and one or two DVD burners will be used for burning of the stored movies, programs, etc....

If you have picture in picture on your TV you should be able to record programs in one window using Linux and surf the internet in the other using XP…and the Dreambox Reality I PVR with cordless keyboard and mouse combo from Logitech…That is a start…more details to follow…Now I have to save some money for the expensive parts…

Hi FordPerfect! I am really interested in following your project. I have a Dreambox myself and though I like it it does have some draw backs as mine doesn't come with a hard drive and though some people have done it I am having trouble with watching it on my PC. Now that I have found some great sites for them they do have great support. But your project would be the ultimate. Do you believe that the same emu's and immages might be able to be used in your version? Thanks for your input

FordPrefect,

VMware Server is free, oddly enough. Try that out first and see if it does what you need!

Also, you might have trouble accessing hardware from within VMware... Might be better off running the PVR and VMware from within Linux, and then Windows within the VMware. Or just forget about Windows and run IceWM/Firefox/etc. :)

randomq,

Yes, I am aware that the VMware server is free. I already have the free server, but latest versions are much better then my old free version, and yes it will do everything I need it to do…that was verified few years ago, not in this application, FTA Dreambox project but non the less it passed for the application I used it for at the time…the only issues to resolve what OS will be the host…Linux or one of the versions of Microsoft Windows or Apple OS 10…not very important which any one will do the trick…

You can also go to a VMware demonstration and get the latest server version for participating…

randomq,

No hardware access issues from VMware. No hardware access issues from Microsoft Windows. And definitely no hardware access issues from Linux. I think the only issues are which OS will be the host, Linux or one of the other two…Apple or Microsoft or perhaps a third OS player. Suggestion of IceWM/Firefox/ will be look at, but I made up my mind on what I want in my Dreambox, I am going to leave certain choices for people that intend to use my project as a guide. But every suggestion is a great addition for this project, and all suggestions will be looked at to see how it can benefit the final product.

Thanks randomq.

dishwasher,

I am not trying to replicate the exact image of the Dreambox, just most of the functionality that it offers…Thank you for following the project and you are welcome to use it any way you chose, a new version is coming soon with table of contents, introduction, etc…it will be quite lengthy and a choice of Linux versions as well as other OS's will be suggested but not necessary adopted for the project…the final configuration will be left up to the reader, do as you chose, since being the end user you will purchase what you can afford, I am totally leaving those decisions to the end user, that was my intent all along.

Do not know enough about the Dreambox actual configuration, to be able to answer your question honestly at this time, what I know is what functionality Dreambox offers to the end user, and that is why I started the project, it is like Tivo on steroids. So I am not sure if one can use the same emu's and immages on my version of the Dreambox Reality. Feel free to provide any suggestions and information; it might be adopted by the project if it is worthy. Let me just tell you that my Dreambox Reality project is based on MythTV, and Fedora Core Linux, but Knopix will also be one of the choices for the less technically gifted end users.

If anyone has any question or suggestions feel free to ask or suggest away…I thought I made my mind up on hardware but as I get into details, I decided that I am really going to spend the money; my intention is to build this HTPC once and not have to upgrade the unit every 3 years…the biggest change in my design is the actual box, and the most expensive piece of hardware…I have tree choices and I will make up my mind as I get close to putting it all together.

Hi FordPerfect, I am wondering if you had a chance to work on this project yet, I bought a pci card Twinhaun 1027 and have finally got it up and running on windows and mytheatre, and I am thinking of doing the same thing (build a system) but I am wondering about how the Linux based system works as apoesed to windows, and if you have built the dreammachine can you tell me if you would have done anything different? Thanks

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

Then they are stupid. Everyone knows that the price per ounce should be the price per ounce of actual product.

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

But a box can weigh more than an ounce..maybe 2...a can might weigh 5 ounces..a bag...not much

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

Obviously you didn't read my post.....google says a coffee bag weighs half an ounce. But let's say you are correct and it DOES weigh a full ounce, that would still fall 5 ounces shy for Walmart's numbers to match.
You wouldn't happen to be kin to Bernie would you

None of it means a hill of coffee beans...the price is the price...its not going to get any lower...as long as you pay the price on the shelf at the register..there is no crime

I can't BELIEVE this is being such a difficult subject. The issue isn't the price....it's the advertised price per ounce. A lot of shoppers, myself included, use the price per ounce in determining which is the better value....with that number being inaccurate, it can trick someone into thinking that one product cost less per ounce than a competing product. Is this a crime?...above my pay grade. Is it dishonest? Yes.

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Thats ridiculous ....

Thats not how Deli does it, I know your talking pre packaged.
They need to CHANGE that.
Jimbo
A pound of Coffee, does that include the package it's in ?

No, a pound of coffee refers strictly to the net weight of the coffee itself (16 ounces), not including the weight of the bag or packaging. [1, 2]
  • Net Weight: Food and coffee sold by weight are required by law to list the net weight on the label, which measures only the contents inside the package. [1, 2]
    • Packaging Weight: The foil bag, valve, and label add extra weight to the total item when you hold it, meaning the gross weight on a scale will be slightly more than 16 ounces.
    • Watch Out for Bag Sizes: Always check the label carefully, as many specialty roasters now sell 12-ounce (three-quarter pound) bags while keeping the price or visual impression similar to a full pound. [1, 2, 3]
meStevo
The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

Yes, I considered D* as I knew some of my favorite channels had better PQ but too many require moving up to the "Choice" package and incurring the Regional Sports Fee.
I do not have METV or any of the Weigel owned channels here in El Paso.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Now in the Hornets and Hurricanes markets we just get the TV promise screen. But Directv still charges sports fee I am assuming.
Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

I tried this with both the Hurricanes and Hornets since I'm in upstate SC, and wasn't offered any kind of credit by the site. It's not a huge deal to me as I can pick up WSOC/WAXN over the air at my location even though I'm outside the Charlotte market.

I know the Spurs will have 22 games available OTA on KMYS-TV CW35 in the San Antonio market, but they'll still be available on DAZN as well. The CW35 broadcasts are an additional option, not an exclusive arrangement.

With channel 680 now available, we should be able to get all the Spurs home feeds on NBALP again! (as well as the other teams above of course)

In order to participate in any Cutting Edge testing, you must sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Attached are a .docx (Microsoft Word) and PDF version of the latest DirecTV NDA. I found it easiest to complete the .docx version then paste a photo or scan image of my signature, cropped closely to just the signature into it as a picture. Then set Word to wrap text around the picture so that the picture follows the text "Signature".

People who have better PDF tools than I do may prefer that version.

When you apply for any Cutting Edge testing, you will be told how to send the signed copy.

Any NDA you have signed before is still valid for the testing you have been and hopefull still are doing. The new NDA forms are ror new CE testers and new categories of CE testing. They have been placed here so that people who volunteer for any CE testing have access to them.

This was actually one of the more disturbing videos I've seen on this channel. IF this guy hadn't been driving a Tesla which has 360 degree cams, he would probably become a felon and had his life ruined.....all because of a lying cop. The other officers in this video didn't impress me too much either, their whole mentality was how can we nail this guy.
This is a perfect example of why I'm always a bit nervous when I get below Perry, FL. There is a huge difference between north and south Florida and everyone who lives here knows this.

Central is not any better, Polk County still does not have body cams.
