I have lurked this site for ages now, and this site was instrumental in helping me choose a satellite provider, but I feel I must now share my story on the horrible customer service attitude of Dish Network. I have had Dish at my apartment for over two years now, and after some initial trouble with installation of my equipment, I have enjoyed trouble free service until now. As of now I am moving out of my apartment and I have bought a house. In an effort to trim bills I decided to cancel my Dish account. During my phone call to Dish I was transferred to an account rep to handle my cancellation. I explained the situation to him and he offered me a chance to lower my existing package and keep service. I was very courteous to him but declined, stating that it was my intention to eliminate certain bills, not just lower them. After that his tone changed dramatically. He stated that they would be sending out a box to ship my receiver back and I asked if he could ship the box to my new address. There was a few seconds of silence followed by a long sigh and a very short "hold on". After being on hold for 3-4 minutes the same rep came back on the phone and took my new address. He stated very curtly "is there anything else?", and as I was answering him I stated "No, that...." and he hung up without waiting for me to finish my statement.

Roll the clock forward a week, to this morning. I stopped by my old apartment to finish packing up a few items and there was a box leaning on my door. I picked it up and it was the box for my receiver, shipped to the wrong address. I was counting my lucky stars that I even received the box as I went inside. After being inside for about 15 minutes my phone rang, I answered and it was a "customer care rep" (sic), for Dish network asking about my cancellation. I told him that the reason I canceled was that I was eliminating bills, and he asked if the account rep had offered me any discounts to stay. I told him that he did, but that I wasn't going to use any satellite service at my new home at least for a few months until I get everything squared away, again I got silence. I stayed on the line for about thirty seconds, at which point I said "hello?", and nothing. For the second time since I called to cancel, a Dish employee has hung up on me. I for one will never go back to dish again, as their customer service is absolutely appalling. I warn anybody that reads this to think twice before getting Dish.

Customer Service these days is a complete myth. In all large companies it is viewed as a cost center. These department have to fight hard for any budget to improve customer service. While any "person" would love to offer a client satisfaction; financially it does not come to pass. For companies that offer stock this is even worse. Wall street will devaluate any stock where they see sizeable dollars going into customer service.

Unfortunately; small companies (mom and pop shops) simply suffer from not having enough revenue to support adequate customer service.

So when you see an add on tv or in print that sais YOU are what is important to them; remember this blog and come back to reality. I am not a cinic just try to live in the real world.

If you think that was bad customer service, wait until you see what happens the next couple years.

I had Directv for a year in 2003 and every time I called I got a foreginer from INdia or pakistan or what ever country I couldn't understand anything they said. When I called to cancel they connected me to an American lady from Texas ,no less. She was so nice and willing to offer anything I wanted that I almost stayed. But in the end I was only trying them while I already had DISH since 97. I didn't like the picture quality or the channel guides and I Liked DISH receivers better so I still cancelled. It seems to me that both companies now are outsourcing their csrs to foriegn countries which doesn't set well with me.

I had a good/bad/good experience with DISH customer service yesterday. I just had the install and as the installer was finishing up he asked me for my HDMI cable. I knew the receiver didn't come with one, but I had assumed (my mistake) that component video cables would be provided. As all of you no doubt know, standard RCAs and coax is all that's in the package.

I felt silly for my ignorance, but at the same time a little mad at DISH for not making this clear at the start. So with the installer still there I made the phone call. The lady I spoke with was patient with this angry client, and quickly told me that as soon as the install was complete she'd send me the cables and waive the charge for them.

Once the installer was gone, I called back to order the cables. The new CSR I got refused to honor the first one's agreement, and spent several minutes telling me what a wonderful deal I was getting and that I shouldn't be at all concerned that I still couldn't receive HD. He even told me that ONLY HDMI would work and that I shouldn't even consider using component cable. We spent several minutes in silence while I could hear him flipping the pages of his teleservice guide and when he came back on he repeated all the major points again. When I asked who else I could complain to, he said no one and offered to send me a box the ship my receiver back. I hung up and immediately called back.

This time I received a delightful lady in Colorado who at once honored the first one's deal with me. The cables will arrive this week.

Before any of you say it, the argument was pretty silly and I probably should have just driven to the local Tweeters or someplace for cables. It became a principle thing with me.

My only point in all this is that the best way to deal with DISH seems to be that if you get a bad answer, call back. The worst that could happen is an affirmation of the first answer, but you might be surprised.

Its sad that they don't realize the value of customer service anymore. Here in the NorthEast banks are beginning to realize the value of it. Even the Comcast Call Center is located in NJ.

But the truth is they can only do what we allow them to get away with. We, as the consumer, pay them and if we continue to receive bad service and accept it they will continue to provide bad service because it is cost effective. If you feel the CSRs are so bad that u'll use alternate methods to get what u want done you are part of the problem.

I suppose I've been fortunate...yeah, I've had dumb CSRs but no one has been rude to me. Even when I was trying to cancel my account (so I could get a 622 to replace my 211) they were still extremely nice, but wouldn't give me a 622. (Thank you CEO email address...ridiculous how I had to beg to give them 200 more dollars and increased programming package...off subject.)

I agree Tech Support is better. They are usually American and a little more knowledgeable. I was complaining about the Programming Fee when I have both my phone lines connected and it took several attempts but finally they are sending me a new (or refurbished) 625. Supposedly the modem is busted.

Anyways...I suppose I've rambled enough but the point is...things wont' change until we decide to change them...as a whole.

Yeah but it get's old real fast !
I e-mailed my cable company yesterday about buying a external hard drive for my 8300 HD cable receiver. I received a phone call today from a tech at the cable company. He advised me what to buy and which cables I needed. Oh yeah, he also spoke ENGLISH ! Great service from a local company (Blue Ridge Cable) and local people.

No, I was actually referring to outside of the Top 8, but should have been Top 12 ...

I guess I should have looked at the bracket from last year first ...

I'm more thinking about them trying to expect a 15 to beat a 5 seed or there abouts .

I mean you get upsets all the time.

Just a couple of weeks ago. Unranked Florida knocked off number 7 texas. Unranked Auburn beat number 1 Georgia.

This week unranked Cincinnati beat number 8 texas Tech. Unranked UCF beat number 2 BYU.

No reason to think similar upsets wont happen in the playoffs where a low seed can upset a higher one.

Correct, you Do get upsets from time to time ....however .
You Don't get teams UPSETTING teams for 5 weeks in a row.

They are trying to make this Basketball and its a far cry from the way that is played.

How long till they go to 32 teams ? Then they will say, well, the NFL is 32 teams, we can make more money that way .... except the NFL is 32 teams, that are a set number of teams and divisions, you don't have that in College ... oh but they will try.

They would have to choose what teams they would want in and thats it.
Hopefully that NEVER happens.

I can see the NCAA going away and the CFP taking that portion over and a Collective Bargaining agreement coming in the not to distant future.

The problem with rankings and playoffs is that they are designed to hype the game and make money. Period.

The only reason that BYU and Texas Tech were upsets is that they were hyped up in the standings in the first place. I love watching BYU and Bear Bachmeier. They are a fun and talented team, but not nearly so strong, fast, big, and skilled as a true top ten team. Does anyone truly believe they could compete with the likes of Georgia, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, etc.? Yet, they were ranked above those teams.

Each year, there are 10 to 12 teams who truly could compete for the championship if it depended on winning more than one game in a playoff. Including teams like James Madison, Tulane, BYU, etc. in a playoff has nothing to do with determining a national champion. It's just about money.

But that wasn't what your stated argument was though.

I mean if you drag it out, no team even a favorite is gonna win every game 20 weeks in a row.

With the parity in college football now, who knows who can beat anyone at any given time?

This season and last have shown it might not be the ones we think that might win it all that will win it all.

No, no ... if you want to make the playoffs, you want to Win it ... If you want to Win it, you need to Win 4-5 games in a row against Top 10 teams for the most part, theres a Possibility you'd play someone out side of the Top 10, but not much.

The Playoffs is a 4-5 game Win or Go Home.

This should hit a lot of folks with a dose of reality. I can only imagine how much more common this will get as AI progresses.

I read several stories on this and most are clear as mud. They say a lot of the stolen bitcoin has been "locked out" and that everyone will be made financially whole. I guess time will tell if either of these statements are actually true.

The "Secure Asset Fund" had about $1 billion in reserves... in Bitcoin.

The fund started in 2018, so it may take a while to make investors whole, much less replenish the fund.

That's kinda what I was seeing but all the news reports are suggesting that all investors will be made whole immediately.
The other thing they weren't clear about was the BTC that was "locked out" of the system. I guess that means that the stolen BTC is basically worthless now because I don't see how it could be replaced....but there is a LOT about the crypto world that leaves me scratching my head.

A few clarifications... the ~$3B "locked" was mostly stablecoins (USDT/USDC). Tether and Circle can blacklist their own tokens, which makes those worthless to the thief. Bitcoin and ETH have no issuer, so they can't be frozen. That's the ~$2.4–3.3B the hackers still have, so the stolen BTC is very much not worthless to them. It was also spread across 10 blockchains, not just bitcoin. On getting made whole: SAFU is ~15,000 BTC (~$1.2B), and Binance says it'll cover the rest from company funds. Analysts don't see it as a solvency problem, and withdrawals are expected back within days.

The attack was pinned on North Korea's TraderTraitor group via a compromised engineer laptop. Like many hacks and compromises, that's old-school social engineering, not AI.

This is what scares me about cryptocurrency: there doesn't seem to be any oversight.

It seems more like politics than investing.

That's the tradeoff stablecoins make - a central issuer that can freeze funds, which is why half the loot got stopped. Bitcoin and ETH have no one in charge, so nobody can reverse a theft, but nobody can freeze your coins either. Stablecoins trade price volatility for trusting a central issuer.

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Nobody is "happy" or "sad" about this. Simply posting data in an non-editorialized way has nothing to do with anyone's feelings.

The data on the streaming side is immensely accurate, I'm guessing to the millisecond. Plus most people likely have not turned off data sharing and thus they are grabbing a huge swath of data. Much more accurate than cable which relies on a smaller sample size and probably not to the second.

In either case, nobody is getting "double counted" because it's usage based. If I watch 100 minutes of content and 30 minutes is on Youtube and 20 minutes on Disney and 50 minutes on YTTV, it's going to show up as 30%, 20%, 50% slices of my personal pie respectively.
Q.
Who does the Counting for Streaming ?

Neilson does the Broadcast/Cable ...
Nielsen does. If you go into the settings of any of your streaming accounts, you can turn off the option to share to usage data with their third party measuring service - Nielsen.

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs

My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.

Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.

After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.

I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

Thanks to Fitch Ratings ( who gives the ratings on Credit and debt, as approved by the SEC, so they have accurate numbers) we have the totals.

DIRECTV's video subscriber base is the third-largest traditional multi-channel video programming distributor (MVPD) in the U.S. with about 8.2 million subscribers at the end of 1Q26.

The last time it was reported, it was 8.8M at the end of 2Q25, so only a 600,000 loss for 3 quarters, which is a major improvement, since for many years before that, it was losing 500,000 a quarter, 2 Million a year.

It is now losing less than Dish/Sling combined, I believe the Genre Packs are helping to retain and get subscribers.

New numbers are out-

DIRECTV was the third-largest U.S. traditional multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) with about 8.0 million subscribers at the end of 2Q2026

Still an average of 200,000 lost per quarter ( for the last four quarters), less than Dish/Sling, which lost 241,000 in the second quarter, 366,000 in the first quarter.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
