I got this box last week after waiting for 3 months with a non DVR receiver to get it. I have issues with the channel changing lag which, I am told by directv, is how the box works. So I am looking at getting another dvr receiver to replace this unit for everyday watching and I will just use the HD box for HD duties.

If given a choice, would a Tivo box (is there a curretn box or is it really being phased out?) be the way to go along with a reg receiver (the two talk to each other..?) or go with the current Directv DVR?

I have searched a bit but missed the obvious page that explains all this..

Thanks

I did change all the native settings and played with the resolution...

Should I search for a Tivo DVR or just go with the current Directv DVR as a replacement? What is the general consensus?

Thanks

Before searching for a Tivo DVR, search these forums for Tivo related posts. There seem to be plenty of people with the HD-Tivo unit who are having significant bugs. Most of them are asking whether they should get the HR20 as a replacement, and if so, what kind of deal they can get in-exchange from D*.
B
There is no Tivo based HD DVR from DirecTV anymore. You'll only find one used. And it won't get any new HD channels and eventually any HD channels as they will all be MPEG4 which the HR10 cannot get.

As for channel changing, have you ever had a DVR before? It's just a nature of the beast that it's slower. Plus they are made to record, not channel surf. My DirecTivo's take about 2-3 seconds or so to change channels. It has to dump the buffer and start recording the new channel. This takes some time. Now on the HR20 add in HD decoding and then the MPEG4 decoding it will add more time.

Turn Native to OFF and just leave it at the native resolution of your TV. This will have the fastest channel changes. 3-5 seconds is my normal, closer to 5 when going from SD to MPEG4 HD. Totally normal. I then manually change format to 480i if I'm watching an SD show that would look better by letting my TV do the upconversion and stretching.
If you have Native ON not only will you have the 3-5 seconds of the HR20 you'll get an added delay as it "searches" for the correct resolution if you have more then 2 chosen. AND you'll also get a delay from your HDTV iteself as it has to resync itself to the resolution chosen. So you might end up with 7-8 seconds depending on the speed of your TV to sync up.

Personally I have a 1080i TV. I have chosen the formats of 480i and 1080i on the HR20 and turned Native to OFF. I leave it at 1080i piller box which will display HD normally and SD in 4x3 with piller boxes on the side. Looks great, channel changes are not bad (but then again I rarely watch live TV). If the SD show is letterboxed I manually switch the format to 480i and let my TV do it's magic.

This took me about 2-3 weeks of playing around with various settings to get the right combination that worked for me. You will probably do the same. There is no right answer for native on or off or what formats to choose, you'll have to figure out what works best in your setup.

My tv supports all resolutions up to 1080i. I usually have the HR20 setup exclude everything except 720p and 1080i. I also set it to send 1080i signal, but might change it to 720p for some sporting events. Channel-changing time and guide-scrolling time don't seem to vary, but they are still slow.
B
If your TV is 1080i you are better off only sending 1080i to it. Sending 720p doesn't gain you anything because the TV still has to convert it to 1080i. Only reason to send 720p is if your TVs upscaler is better then the HR20. But try it both ways and see what look better. To me there is no difference at all so I disable 720p on the HR20.

If you had a 720p TV I'd recommend the same thing, disable 1080i on the HR20 and just send your TV what it wants, 720p.
Kentstater72
If the problem is in your habit of surfing channels, try using the blue button to surf.
I have changed my habits because of the lag time. My wife appreciates this style surfing and the lag is only there when you choose a station.

I have the Tivo 10-250 in the bedroom and the Hr20 as the main unit in the LR and I would not switch them. Once you get used to the HR20, it seems fine.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

PISTONS and THUNDER are finally testing on the stream server. PISTONS is showing the Ion/Scripps Sports promo loop filler that their NHL and WNBA feeds have, THUNDER has a "You are watching Thunder+" slate

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

West Palm Beach is getting it on WTCN-CD/43 MNT. Still nothing for Fort Myers

Also, the Thunder's deal for KSBI/52 OKC and KQCW/19 Tulsa will be via a special cable and DIRECTV only feed of those stations. OTA viewers and Dish customers will be limited to 10 games.

Not seeing 44 (WVBT-DT/44 CW Norfolk ) on my D* app for firestick
K
It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

Be nice to see a Cowboy headline like that.
Yes the Cowboys owner needs to fire the general manager (himself), co-owner, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel, and President of AT&T Stadium (his son) and then he should jump off of a cliff. Only then can they recover.

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had an argument about who was responsible for the dynasty building of the early 90's Cowboys.

The rest of us figured it out in about 3 years, Jerry has had over 30 years but still can't admit it. It's all he lives for, to show everyone he can put together a winner. I don't think he can. His kids only know what he taught them.

Odd that out there, Prem is only 40 cents higher. Here it's a full dollar more.

Last night it was about $4.17 gas, $6,19 diesel.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Both non-ethanol and prem run about the same....buck more. When we were up in TN it was a buck more up there as well.

In Oregon, our premium boat gas is about a dollar more than our corn premium. Several stations only offer the non-corn premium grade.
