WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- In an intensifying battle to hold off incursions by cable TV providers, AT&T Inc. is about to put its strategy to a new test.

A key step likely will come some time later this year, when the company is expected to unveil a decision that could roil the satellite TV market. AT&T, which now has two satellite providers in its stable as a result of its BellSouth acquisition, soon plans to choose between the two -- and abandon one of them.

Decides which one of the two archrivals will be left standing as Ma Bell's exclusive satellite-television partner.

The loss of a major contract certainly wouldn't be good news for DirecTV or EchoStar, owner of Dish. More than 800,000 DirecTV customers and perhaps 700,000 Dish subscribers signed up with AT&T as part of a discounted bundle of video, phone and Internet service.

The partnership with AT&T helps cut marketing costs for the satellite carriers and augments their ability to add new customers at a time when subscriber-growth rates are slowing.

"It's an important part of their business," said Jimmy Schaeffler, a satellite-industry analyst who runs The Carmel Group. "The phone companies are helping the satellite companies to retain their strong subscriber-growth numbers."
For now, said AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook, no decision has been reached. "Satellite remains very important to AT&T and we are still exploring our options," he said. Dish and DirecTV officials declined to discuss the issue.

Yet the chief financial officer of the nation's largest phone company has publicly acknowledged that AT&T would end one of the relationships in early 2008.
"Both of those are contractual arrangements that run through roughly the first part of next year;" AT&T CFO Rick Linder told investors at a conference last week. "And so I would expect that we will migrate to one provider, and we will make those final decisions between now and the end of this year."
Ties that bind

The marketing arrangement with AT&T is one of many struck by the satellite companies in the past few years as they battle the cable industry for customers.
"They have broadband. They have wireless phone. They have long-distance and local phone," Charles Ergen, EchoStar's chief executive, explained in a recent conference call with analysts. "So they have the ability to allow us to get our customers a quadruple play that cable really can't offer."

In each of those cases, the phone companies offer just one satellite choice to customers. The same had been true for AT&T, whose marketing of Dish stems from Ma Bell's recent acquisition of BellSouth.

BellSouth, as it turns out, was DirecTV's largest phone partner, bringing in more than 800,000 video customers. Suddenly DirecTV became AT&T's biggest video provider, giving rise to the company's current entanglement with the two fierce satellite rivals.

Yet the longer and deeper relationship between AT&T and EchoStar puts Dish on the inside track to remain in the AT&T fold, analysts say. AT&T paired up with Denver-based EchoStar (DISH : EchoStar Communications Corp
in 2003, and the two recently began to offer a well-regarded satellite-broadband product called Homezone.
Homezone combines television and Internet service in one box, allowing customers to download movies, schedule recordings remotely or gain access to any file on their personal computers via their TV sets.

It really doesn't matter if at&t drops directv or dish network, since both companies are screwed once at&t releases their uverse nation wide. I see within the next 5 to 10 years directv and dish network combining forces just to stay afloat. I bet the owner of dish network wished he took the buyout from at&t a while back. The only thing that dish network has going for them between at&t is the homezone receiver. I know my shop is screwed since at&t sells about half our jobs a day. Hopefully they buy us out and combine forces. Just to lay some numbers dish network has 13 million or 14 million subscriber right now, but at&t's uverse is suppose to be available to 19 million homes by the end of 2008. Time to look for a new job, or just wait it out to see what happens. I am sort of scared.

You have far too high an opinion of "uverse." Try watching an HD program while recording another, and maybe while someone at another TV tries to watch a third. Can't do it.

"available to" is like "up to" and "soon"
J
U-Verse first is no match for the video services you can get from either of the satellite companies. With either dish or directv you can get as many HD channels in as many rooms as you want, all DVR, or whatever. Plus, U-Verse will NEVER reach the entire AT&T footprint, it's just not economical. My grandfather's house, even though he wouldn't use DSL, isn't even qualified for DSL, and while he lives on the edge of a major metro area, he's not way out in the woods.

What do you base this statement on that they will be screwed? The SBC partnership with Dish started back in late 01 and since then has brought in an estimated 700k while Att has brought in 800k subs since that partnership. Att could drop both and both would float along fine, this would be only a minor bump in the road for them not some cataclysmic event that will send both DBS providers into bankruptcy.

I see within the next 5 to 10 years directv and dish network combining forces just to stay afloat.

Wont happen because there are no other sat providers now or slated to come out and that would be a monopoly, the last time this was tried several senators started waving their arms in the arm and shouting that if the partnership went through that farmer John would end up paying more than them there city folk, the FTC round filed the plans for partnership and both walked away from the idea.

I bet the owner of dish network wished he took the buyout from at&t a while back.

What buyout are you talking about? Charlie Ergen has made it publicly clear that Dish Network is not for sale, he is having fun with what he is doing and has no plans to sell, this statement came after rumours that Murdoch was interested in buying Dish.

The only thing that dish network has going for them between at&t is the homezone receiver.
Dish has the dual tuners, dishpro plus that is backwards compatible with most legacy equipment ( theres still alot out there in use ) theres also what many call the best working DVR's in the business, the most HD content, the best selection of programming from outside of the United States....should I continue?

I know my shop is screwed since at&t sells about half our jobs a day. Hopefully they buy us out and combine forces.
Are you a sub or a DNS tech? If your a sub then you have alot more to worry about, if your a DNS you dont need to worry about the loss of the partnership.

Just to lay some numbers dish network has 13 million or 14 million subscriber right now, but at&t's uverse is suppose to be available to 19 million homes by the end of 2008.

Dish has 13 million subs, Direct has 16 million subs, the numbers are nice that att will be able to offer uverse to 19 million but both Dish and Direct are available to 301,987,762 potential customers within the United States right now, can any cable or phone company say that?

Time to look for a new job, or just wait it out to see what happens. I am sort of scared.
I wouldnt be so worried, people want tv, its the most widely distributed form of legalized addiction in the world and us Americans are experts at our drug of choice so even if at the incredibly rare chance Dish goes under or Direct goes under there is always cable and phone to go and work for.
mike123abc
It is also possible if for example ATT decides to go with Dish they could take a minority interest in Dish. If ATT buys some of Dish they could partner with Dish to provide the programming for U-Verse. Dish probably gets much better pricing on channels due to their large number of subs. ATT could leverage a partnership like this.

The same of course could be done with DIRECTV.

Same with dual tuner, you can only record 1 show and watch live tv on the other, or you can record two shows but are forced to watch what you are recording or something your previously recorded.

yeah, but that's only at one TV. The Uverse restrictions are per HOUSE. You can only have one HD stream for your entire household at a time.

Yep. And heck, I'm in Fairfax County, one of the "richest" in the country, and right across the street from a major university- and can't get DSL. Fios nowhere in sight. So even urban areas can be outta luck.

I've had recordings going on my ViP622, 508 & 721 all at the same time, while watching a recorded show on the ViP622. That's up to 5 simultaneous satellite recordings and one OTA recording possible at the same time. Two of the satellite recordings and the OTA recording could all be in HD (or more, if I had more HD DVRs). I doubt I was actually recording that many at the same time, but I could have. A family could easily have need/use for 2, 3 or even more HD feeds at the same time. Especially with kids of widely varying ages.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

You have a different offer that is free for a shorter timeframe which is different than the one that I and bnewt saw without defining the promotion period as I sent the question to DISH Care via Facebook Messenger and this is the response I got back 20 minutes ago.

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.
