My first impulse (and hope) - SD will be coming off 61.5 and going to 77 making lots of room for lots of HD. Really want SD on the EA then get 77. The only thing that tempers that is what about the WA. There won't be HD on the EA not on the WA will there?

This is the best stuff and programming speculation in a long time!! (Scott are you holding back - do you know what's coming??)

It seems unlikely. I can see where DISH may be positioning themselves to start the 8PSK conversion on the Western Arc (and hopefully with it, a lot of MPEG4 conversions), so it may not be as far behind as it seems.

It's only one PBS channel (National feed PBSxd) mapped many times for markets without a PBS affiliate. Same goes for all those WGNs. There is only one channel mapped to a ton of channels for different areas.

Again being Honest...

What I have been told unofficially by friends at DISH and ESPN is that a DEAL IS DONE, however the contract is still not finalized so basically they are operating now on a handshake deal. Which means don't expect the new channels until after the contract is signed. I am told that this contract is heavy duty and is many many pages. And that they are getting a page or two done a day, each change needs to go back and forth to lawyers from both sides until the wording is acceptable to both sides as both sides want no wiggle room so that the contract cant be misinterpreted by either side to allow them to do things which were not agreed upon. With the new online digital rights which is something new both parties are moving along wording that out to be fair to each other.

Also be be 100% honest, I have heard some rumblings of a new form of Prime Time Anytime which will group commonly recorded non broadcast network channels together onto transponders which will allow the Hoppers to record more using less tuners. Imagine being able to record up to 12 things using just two tuners. I think I remember posting something about a patient on this a few months ago, but haven't had time to search and find it.

We also know that old boxes are being phased out on the Western Arc, and I believe the deadline is in February... I expect a lot of channels on the Western Arc to be moved into 8PSK mode opening up a lot of space on the Western Arc. Going back to the ESPN / DISNEY talk once again being honest I am not sure how much room currently there is to readd those channels. This move to 8PSK would definitely help with that problem. About the only thing I can guess is they are practicing doing this upgrade using the Eastern Arc since everyone on Eastern Arc has MPEG4 / 8PSK compatible receivers already... I know its a stretch but its the only thing I can come up with.

One thing is for sure... it is interesting to see and to ponder what could be going on... if I were a betting man, I would say a lot of DISH customers are going to be happy by Mid Year if not sooner.

And that's what I know.

Thanks Scott. I high time Dish start 8PSK conversion on WA. IMO...Dish should start by upgrading those sub boxes capable of MPEG4 HD signals...so that down the line getting all MPEG4 will be easier...ie MPEG4 SD from MPEG2 SD. That out to get more space on WA...allowing more HD channels

The biggest deal that comes out of the Disney negotiations may be a new industrial standard for the boilerplate that addresses all the new technologies for recording and streaming and whatever else they think of. Be nice to see the feuding stop.
