222 with Sling Adapter

I got a new 222k box last night because the old one went bad. I also got a wireless adapter so I now have internet to the 222. I have a Sling adapter from a friend who doesn't need it anymore. I plugged the wireless adapter into a powered USB hub and it works fine. I then plugged the Sling adapter into the USB hub. I am Using the Android app, I get a message about "This feature requires an internet connection, but your receiver doesn't seem to be connected..." When I log in to my dishonline account, under "My Receivers", it says "Receivers could not be loaded". Do I need to have a DVR to use Sling or am I missing a step somewhere?

The sling adapter only works with the 722, 722k and the Hopper

And furthermore, at least in principle, non DVR VIP receivers could accept BB@home streaming. But alas, that feature too is unavailable.
