4K Events Discussion Thread


Since I recorded the game on my Hopper3 I tested your suggestion of changing the Color Space from Auto to BT.2020 on my Sony XBR-65X900E TV. You are correct. The colors become more intense and vibrant. In fact the colors of the 4K game match the Fox OTA channel. I agree that Fox Sports is broadcasting HDR that Direct TV uses but Dish has removed the HDR.

I also confirm that the colors look correct when when the color space is set to BT.2020 (or “Wide” under “Color Gamut” for LG TVs).

Whatever Dish is doing, it’s reporting the wrong color space/color gamut.

I found an article that describes conversion of HDR to SDR. [Video] HDR > SDR conversion for TVs not compatible with HDR

Since version 3.13, there is no need to manipulate anything to have an automatic conversion HDR to SDR. New conversion works on the luminance curve and the chrominance. A 3D LUT is dynamically applied to convert BT.2020 to BT.709.

To have an optimal conversion, here are the settings that we advise :
Deep Color: 10 Bits
Color Space: Y'CbCr 4:4:4

The NFL Colts game yesterday on Dish 4k had terrible color.
About the worst I've seen yet. This whole stripping the HDR off is a stupid idea.
Just put the original 4k HDR version on the HDR channel.

Which looked good on Directv.

Dish has got to be one of the biggest cheap ass companies I've ever seen.

They have a 4K HDR channel with nothing on it and refuse to put the NFL 4k HDR game on with HDR.

They would rather send out inferior video for their paying customers.
While all their main rivals send of the better signal.

That would be Directv and Comast for a start.

And there are others on the list.

Dish keeps scraping the bottom and then digs even lower to find another lower standard.

All the while the clock keeps on ticking towards the future of TV being all internet TV.

Does DISH care at all about it's customers and ever being a industry leader.

The answer would be NO.

Thanks again DISH for more 2nd rate 4K.

BJF, did you try to adjust the color space to correct the colors. Adjusting the color space to BT.2020 fixed the colors for several of us.

No I didn't. I will try.

But the real issue for me is DISH stupid behaviour of being so damn cheap and not just giving us the
quality HDR version. They could even offer both SDR and HDR like Comcast is doing for the live games on two channels.

It's not like anything is ever on their 4k channels.

I sound snappy at DISH but it's just getting old all this stupidity they keep doing.

I'm still very pissed at losing all the regional sports channels.

When the internet matures a bit more and they have a DVR that rivals sat. tv I will be there fast.
And so will my money. I'm sure millions will as well. DISH is just so damn clueless / arrogant and disrespectful of their customers.

I do appreciate your suggestion on the color.

I leave the color space set on my Sony TV set at BT.2020 instead of the default of Auto. It has no affect on the normal Dish HD channels.

I assume that I would need to change it back to Auto when I use my Roku 4, Apple TV, or the built in apps on my TV that can do HDR. But most of my viewing is with the Dish Hopper3.

I do agree with you that it would be nice if Dish would do both HDR and non HDR versions of the 4K sports.

My LG OLED C8 is on BT.2020. Colors are washed out and look terrible.

It is an absolute shame that my OTA picture is better than the 4k picture on satellite. In fact, the regular satellite feed of my local Fox is a better picture. I can't understand why they would even bother to send that signal down with it looking WORSE than the non-4k versions.

In addition, the Dolby 5.1 mix is totally wrong as well. The announcers are mixed into the the L and R channels and the center channel has no discernible audio.

DD5.1 is just fine on DIRECTV's 4K channel for the game, so it's something on Dish's end causing the problem, not FOX.
 
A few ifs: If you have a 4K Roku or 4K Fire Stick and if you have the Fox Sports app loaded on either you can get this game in 4K HDR10 using your DISH credential. It does look pretty good!

Yes, I checked it out. Looks pretty good.

I wonder why Amazon doesn't offer a 4k HDR stream since they negotiated the rights to carry these games and offer a lot of 4k HDR content?
