Get a Hopper3. Not saying it'll fix it, however with all the features and quick accesses again, you may forget about it.

Almost universally, yes, and I would not expect that to result in the display problems the OP describes in any case. If the TV could not handle 1080i/p, it should just result in a blank screen or maybe an out of range error message.
