5/20/2010 4:07pm - Uplink Activity Report - 145 changes

Those are for markets that dont have a PBS affiliate. They will get the National feed

on D* they do the same thing. My market (Mankato, MN) gets PBS national and so will Dish (6534)

That is Galavision.

213 is the new Weather channel.

However, some weird anamolies.

Why:

when it was just moved to EchoStar14 ? Is that a digisat glitch ?

Why is KEYT added as "5270" and unavailable, when it is already available as 5280 ?

I think you already got your answer on the why they are duplicating channel numbers.

Nope, no glitch in the uplink tool. The transponder ID for the spotbeams on E7 and E14 are totally different. They simply added a virtual channel to that beam.

i thought thats what it was after i posted that question i kind of figured it while reading your earlier posts made by you and others while i was typing....damn i type slow:) thanks !!

They must be putting a channel on the old E*7 spot beams to monitor those spot beams in case EchoStar 14 suddenly fails, and they need to move everything back.

Wow, that is being really cautious and careful - but I suppose that is proper operation for hundreds of millions in hardware...

no worries. At least we both know for sure what they're doing ;)

It does seem odd that Dish and Direct cant import a PBS from a neighboring market to those whose market doesnt have a PBS. Cable in Mankato imports KTCA from Minneapolis (and KSMQ from Austin/Albert Lea, MN)

The programming is different on the national feed and the local affiliates ;)

Well, at least Denver will get Univision in HD soon. PBS in HD well, that is a different story.

Replacing The Weather Channel with another weather channel may be a plus. It seems that averything the NBC Universal has taken over has gone down hill. And The Weather Channel, has been nothing more than an infomercial channel with a few weather reports thrown in. So, let's hope the new weather related channel fills its role as an information source.

By teh way, what is it with the 10 PBS SD channels?

post 21 ;)

its one feed with numerous remaps

At least DISH could have provide the HD national feed for these DMAs. It seems to me that DISH is going to wait to the very last minute to provide an PBS in HD. If they are, then they should go against the wishes of local PBS stations and get rid of "center cut". Ever since the DTV cut over, watching PBS stations is worse, because "center cut" was not performed prior to the conversion. This is a perfect case where getting rid of "black bars" is a disservice.

Dish can get 12 SD locals on a TP

TP25 has 8 (the 2 dupes today are not taking bandwidth) and TP23 has 13 but IIRC PBS in Maine is statewide right?

TP25 is only FEC 1/2 so they can't get as many channels on it as the FEC of 5/6

Also to answer another question you might have when Dish maps subchannels they usually are labelled the number of the digital channel. If the station moved back to their old analog number at digital conversion, Dish uses the "old" digital number.

That is why your Fox station is mapped as 16 and Mankato, MN (my market) is mapped as 38 since both main stations moved to their old analog spot

I understand. The PBS I have is not statewide I don't think. I am almost positive my PBS is the local one from Orono, Me. But maybe I am wrong. Please let me know if I am.

Why Not Fill w/ HD?

Looks like

6530(6) - WRTV [MPEG2 SD] added to EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 13 (NA)(Indianapolis, IN-ABC)
6532(13) - WTHR [MPEG2 SD] added to EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 13 (NA)(Indianapolis, IN-NBC)
6533(59) - WXIN [MPEG2 SD] added to EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 13 (NA)(Indianapolis, IN-FOX)

will be used to fill Lafayette, IN, which has WLFI CBS. My question is why doesn't Dish fill in DMA's with HD channels if they are available? I'd rather have 3 Indy HD's and 1 SD instead of all 4 SD.

Either way, happy I didn't renew AAD :)

Looks like I was right about DISH just adding Beaumont channels 6/CBS and 12/ABC to the Lake Charles dma to finish out their missing locals.

The STELA bill that allows Dish to make the changes in the uplink report, also requires Dish to provide 50% of the local PBS HD channels by the end of the year, and the other half by the end of next year.
PBS will not allow Dish to provide the PBS-HD national feed...

looks like Maine PBS is the statewide version where each station is the same thing

Lots of states do that

most of these markets dont have their locals in HD to begin with so why have PBS in HD ???

By the way...on D* if you have National PBS you dont get it in HD

It probably has to do with the fact that your LOCAL isnt in HD with Dish. Once it becomes available in HD Dish could then do HD as you noted

They should be required to carrie all of the PBS locals and sub channels.

Thats fine but what subchannels do you carry?

Good example is here in Minnesota. We have 4 different PBS stations in the state (not combined like state run) and each one has a different set of subchannels

Minneapolis has
PBS
MN Channel (all PBS stations in MN have this)
TPT Life (like create but different)
Aeronautical weather

WDSE Duluth has
PBS (different than Mpls)
PBS 2nd chance (reruns)
create (the real create channel...same as on AMC21)
MN Channel

KSMQ Austin/Albert Lea
PBS
MHz Worldview
Create
Minnesota Channel

KAWE/KAWB Brainerd/Bemidji
PBS
National feed
PBS Kids
Create
Lakeland Plus (shows rerun)
MN Channel

Pioneer Public TV
PBS
Create
MN Channel
PBS satellite service

thats a lot of stations to carry...does Dish have the bandwidth? I know Create they could use maybe as CONUS and just remap it. But the oddball stations that each state may have what do you do with those?
