I've heard that the 510 is going to be software upgraded soon to have name base recording, and that the 522 will get video on demand. Any of this true?

this is from a chat from the tech forum chat posted on alt.dbs.echostar

Jodi: Why does 510 record differently than the 942?
Dan Minnick: Name-based recording vs time-based. 510 will get NBR
"soon, early this spring." "That difference will go away when we roll
out name-based a little bit later in the spring."

DISH on Demand
Enjoy movies and programming at any time you want. Available on the
ViP622 and DVR625. In early March will roll it out on the 510 and 508
models, and early April on the DVR522.

How are they going to add DISH on Demand to my existing 510? Does this
mean they will take away my hard disk space for my recordings and put
their movies on it? I will not be happy if they take recording time away from
me.

Could you elaborate. I would not like to lose any 508 recording space to VOD!

We have been discussing this some on the tech chat thread. I think the consensus is that the 510 probably already has enough reserved space for reasonable VoD. The 508 doesn't seem to have enough to do anything reasonable. The 501 has almost no reserved space, but the quote in the tech chat only referred to the 508/510 when they were discussing VoD.

I have a 508 and will hate it if they take the space. OTOH, who knows what E* will really do, until it actually happens. Be patient grasshopper.

larger hard drive

I was just told by a tech that you could install a larger drive into your DVR. My question is and I forgot to ask wouldn't that void your warranty, and would they repair said unit with the Dish Home Protection Plan if you changed out drives?

Ron

That would be great if you could! There have been some who have tried it and only a few with advanced technical skills have been able to make it work. It's not the same as upgrading the hard drive in a TiVo.

If anyone finds a simple way to upgrade the hard drive in a 508 I will give it a try!

When they say 510 I assume that they will also do it for 501 and 508 (unless they want to only add the feature to the receivers that they get a DVR fee for).
