54.3 Remote not waking up

I got a new 54.3 remote but it's not lighting up when picked up, only when I press any button. Any ideas?

Are you in a dark room? Hard to tell other wise.

Did you give the remote a good shaking?

Yes dark room and I shook it really hard.

Try removing batteries and putting back. If that doesn't fix it then will probably need a new one.

Well the problem solved itself. However I am unable to teach this remote commands. The old 54.0 remotes do just fine teaching commands. The 54.3 simply won't take any at all. So what I have to do is teach commands to the 54.0, back it up and restore to the 54.3. Anyone else had this problem? Is there a special trick to it?
